There's a whining coming from the power steering I believe when accelerating and turning also there is a leak from somewhere.I've read that it could be a steering rack problem causing it any ideas? The car has been making a single clunck when reverse parking the last few weeks too. Read more

It is often the pump that leaks on these. There is a modified unit, but may also need the modified pipes to go with it.

The fuss over VW prompted me to wonder about other cases of car makers trying to cheat regulations or not telling the truth about their products.

The one that comes to mind for me was the BL Metro, which was claimed to have a revolutionary new rustproofing process and yet very soon became notorious for rapid rusting. Read more

It's amazing how much space babies need in a car!

I'd suggest the Octavia but with the 1.4 TSI petrol engine - lots of room in both back seat and boot, and doe sit really matter what it looks like? Also available as an estate....

Somehow my car has got what appears to be a fine misting of paint. This shows up as very small dots of white on the screen and bodywork. The car has not been near any painters or bodyshops so it is a mystery as to where it has come from.

How do I get it off the glass and also off the paintwork. It comes off the glass if you scrape it with your nail, so would it be safe to use a blade to do the glass? What is best for the paintwork? Any help appreciated. Read more

Personally I see it making no difference in the motor trade.

Decent, honest traders will work continue to work with the buyer to sort issues only resorting to a refund or exchange at the last resort....

Hard to describe but when I'm slowing down approaching a junction or whatever, I get a weird "twitchy" feeling in the steering, almost as if it's adjusting itself and going really light for a brief moment. It doesn't affect handling or cause the car to pull to one side. There's no vibrations either and only 31k on the clock. Seems to be more noticable if road is bumpy.

Ttracking, alignment, toe, suspension and bushes are all spot on. Tyres are new and have only done 300 miles, pressures are fine. Decent tyres too, not cheapos.

I know this car has speed sensitive steering...could the weird feeling I'm getting be the steering adjusting to the decrease in speed? I've taken it to VW and they've said they can't find anything. I had a 2005 Polo before that and don't remember the same thing happening. It too had speed sensitive steering (maybe the 2008 one has a different system?). Read more

Make sure that the power steering fluid isn't low.

When booked in for a service and MOT which would you expect to be carried out first?

Turns out I had the MOT first which turned up a fail item that would have been corrected if the service had been carried out first.

I guess the end result is what matters it's just a little annoying to have a record of an MOT fail for something that could have been avoided.

HI great site.... i have a fiat punto and had the clutch replaced and the car dropped off today. As soon as i drove it off the brake warning light came on and goes off and on intermittently when driving but in particular when I am accelerating or stopping. The clutch and brakes feel fine and work ok and I have checked the brake fluid which is right up to the top of the reservoir but its a bit dark so i cant see at what level its at and I definately cant seet this filter which apparently stops it filling up. So any help would be much appreciated, and btw prior to the clutch being replaced I have no problem with the warning light, thanks in advance Read more

As brake pads wear the fluid level drops, so if it's been replenished because of this rather than a leak which should have been properly investigated, fluid needs to be removed from the system before new pads are fitted. Something to bear in mind if you replace them yourself otherwise when the caliper pistons are pushed back in brake fluid will be ejected from the master cylinder all over the bulkhead.

Ok, have £3k and an 07 Astra Estate SXi to PX, so that should be about £5k.

Currently looking for something cheaper to insure and more economical - preferably 12 reg or later - which leaves me with a range of moderately good city cars.... Read more
