Ford S-MAX - Remmove paint spray from screen and bodywork - Richard M

Somehow my car has got what appears to be a fine misting of paint. This shows up as very small dots of white on the screen and bodywork. The car has not been near any painters or bodyshops so it is a mystery as to where it has come from.

How do I get it off the glass and also off the paintwork. It comes off the glass if you scrape it with your nail, so would it be safe to use a blade to do the glass? What is best for the paintwork? Any help appreciated.

I wouldn't use a blade. Try a 'spontex'-type sponge pad (the rougher side), may well do the trick, with some detergent. Failing which, a SMALL amount of thinners on a cloth

T Cut is safer - use with a soft clean microfiber cloth.

Methylated spirit may remove it, its a mild solvent compared with cellulose thinners so should do any damage.

Clay bar is the safe answer using the correct lubricant. Halfords sell Megiuars ones which work very well on contaminents but other specialists sell ones which may be more suited to overspray. A quick Google should find a supplier.

If you go to a car bodyshop they usually have wipes that can get paint off without damaging the cars paint.

Absolutely has to be this - just make sure you use plenty of lubrication. Bilt Hamber do one that only needs water (I always add just a touch of washing up liquid as well)

Replied to wrong message in error - trying to say that a clay bar is by far the best way to get the overspray off.

Is anyone near you painting their house? I made the mistake of not moving my car when painting the side of my property a while ago and found hundreds of small spots of paint all over my car (doh!).

Being emulsion thinners / meths was no use but all the spots came off with a series of washes by hand.

Thanks for the suggestions. I will have to see which one will work best. As to how it got there it is a mystery as there is no painting at home but maybe there was some when it was parked somewhere, or maybe it has come off a line painting wagon?

Could a neighbour have been using one of these shed and fence presure sprayers, although white seems unlikely. They're a menace, the fine mist they create can get carried by the wind a long way.

No fences nearby that have been sprayed. If I use the clay bar on paint will it be OK on pearlescent or will it take of the top coat, and does it need repolishing?

Clay is safe on any paint if used correctly with the correct lubricant. The surface of a pearl finish is lacquer just like metallic and some solid colours and is designed to withstand daily use.

A polish after is a good idea but that applies to a car regardless of being clayed or not.

The first time I used a clay bar I was very sceptical and slightly nervous but was stunned what came off the car and was equally stunned how smooth it felt after. Its not hard work either, the lubricant means the bar moved easilly across the car.

Just follow the instructions.

Thanks for the info. I just need to see if I can get some locally or have to get it off internet.

Halfords sell clay bars. Probably every local car accessory place sells them. Whether e-Bay or whatever is cheaper I've no idea.

Have a read of this www.polishedbliss.co.uk/acatalog/decontaminating-p...l very helpful and thorough explanation of what clay is (and how to use it safely!) - main issue being if you drop it on the ground, you have to chuck it as there's no safe way to remove whatever grit will have stuck to it! Other than that it's very straightforward and highly effective :)
