Oh dear,

I washed my car yesterday, our water is SO hard that even a new kettle gets crummy in 1 day (no exaggeration). After washing with hot water and Meguires Gold car shampoo and rinsing off with hose, the dried water made the car look dirtier than before I started. The streaking and limescale was HORRENDOUS (the sun didn't help since it dried rather fast)

I tried a wax polish and a PTFE polish, and although it was nice to polish the car, neither fully removed the limescale marks I can still where all the water "puddles" dried. Two questions... Read more

That makes sense. I don't need to leather when I use rainwater, which must be reasonably pure. Given it's come of the roof it collects grit but that sits in the bottom of the butt.

How are the fuel pump and fuel gauge sender earthed and if it is separate earth point, where is it? Read more

In common with many modern cars, the fuel tank sender has no earth to it .Both wires from the level sensor go back to the instrument cluster.

My decking project is coming along nicely. The supports are all levelled and the joist frame in place. Just waiting for delivery of the stainless steel screws to commence fixing the decking boards. My only reservation about decking is that it can become very slippery, especially in the cooler damper weather. However I am assured by several people that an annual application of non-slip coating is very effective against this. The problem is I just don't know. We have never had decking previously so have no experience. Would prefer experienced opinion than product claims.

Any useful advice gladly received. Cheers Concrete Read more

Thanks Rob, went onto the Ronseal website and there is some advice and products available, including non-slip coatings. Lots of others came up too, including a German coating that received excellent reviews for being non-slip. I am going to a local supplier next week to look at some and see what I think. Will keep you posted.

Cheers Concrete

Yes, GB, I was a cub, then a boyscout, then a senior scout and I learned all about Be Prepared. I also carry two strips of carpet in the 'boot' to put under the wheels when starting off on ice, although I now have an all wheel drive car with winter tyres that never gets stuck. Habit, I guess; someday I might meet someone who needs them.

I too followed a car with a half down tyre and when it was stopped at the traffic lights I went and told the driver. The driver was a young woman and could have taken fright, but she pulled into the nearby filling station where they have an air line....

Has anyone had any timing belt issues with Golfs or Passats? Thinking of buying second hand but a few contacts have reported expensive timing belt repairs? Read more

elekie&a/c doctor

It is not the belt that is the problem,it is one of the pulley bolts that shears and causes the drive system to collapse with catastrophic engine failure.

As some of you know, I recently had an interesting experience with tyres. Anyway, as a result I looked into the EU tyre labels. I bought some tyres based on the label as I foolishly assumed the ratings were both accurate and useful. Some thoughts:

1) The noise rating is for the noise as measured outside of the car. The noise is measured by the tyre maker, so they choose the car. The noise level will depend on the nature of the materials around the tyre and their shape. So, lots of room there for the tyre maker to change the measured value. Even lowering the car may change the result! And it tells you nothing about the noise level inside the car!... Read more

These companies are little more than advertising lists. The trade pays the agency, either a yearly fee, or a fee for each job. The terms and conditions are weighted in favour of the trade, not you. Some of the trades are okay, some aren't. Some are clowns. You do best to ask neighbours and friends for good trades. A good trade has a waiting list, and does not need to pay CheckABodger to get work.

I've read that MX5 owners rate Vredestein Sportrac, maybe worth looking them up on your model specific forum.

SWMBO returned to her car to find it had gained a penalty charge notice - she could also see that the parking ticket she'd bought was on the top of the dashboard where she'd left it, but was upside down: This was a ticket of the type that has no peel-off sticker; she knew she'd placed it correctly but it must have flipped over when shutting the door and she hadn't re-checked.

Obviously that's been a lesson for her, and understandably the parking warden had no option but to issue a penalty notice.... Read more
