My VW Passat was due for a 40,000 miles service and I contacted the local VW dealership to agree a suitable date. The vehicle was new to me and I hadn't previously owned a VW car.

Whilst collecting the car following the service, I saw a package on the passenger seat and asked the employee what it was. 'It's a free gift from us in appreciation of your custom'. It was a litre of engine oil in a zipped plastic holder.... Read more

After 6 years with his Micra dad has decided a new car is on his new year "to do" list. 3 of his last 4 cars have been Nissans (Primera, Almera and Micra) and during that time the only part that has been replaced has been a rear wheel cylinder on the Almera and the only warranty jobs have been a lock circlip on the Almera and a faulty electric window switch on the Primera, to say he is happy is an understatement.

We have looked on the web and decided to have a look at the Sandero. Being a bit selfish I persuaded him that he needs the top spec with the petrol turbo since if he gives up motoring in the short term (he is 86 next week) it might as well be a car that me and the Mrs could happily use. At just under £9000 its less than he paid for the Micra 6 years ago.... Read more

My usually reliable Terrano is giving some grief, lately it has been a bit spluttery at low revs, just the odd hiccup now and then, but today it has been playing up terribly, it cit out a a junction and ran like a dog when restarted, until it hit 2000 revs and pulled away as normal, I was worried it was fuel starvation, but on the motorway it sat at a very comfortable 80 until the end of the motorway when it started the stutter thing again, when it stutters there is a burst of blue smoke, keep it above 2k and it is fine.

No problem

Interestingly, my 2007/57 9-3 handbook does not specify a change interval for the coolant. I changed it at 5yrs old anyway.

On some concrete sections of the A12 in NE Essex and parts of the A14 near Ipswich in South Suffolk the Highway Authorities have machined a series of closely spaced grooves parallel to the direction of travel. The effect is a very large reduction in road noise compared to the normak grooves at right angles to the direction of travel. These are obviously short test sections but does anyone know if this is likely to become a standard practice as the noise reduction make s driving so much quieter and enjoyable.

They have built hundreds of miles of autobahns in Germany using concrete and they are very smooth and are supposedly much cheaper and quicker to build and take the monoply from the black top boys .The downside is they seem not to last if they are not layed correctly.

I though this was a motoring site, not an anti-motoring site.
The OP is talking about a road trip.

The OP is contemplating a 3-4 day round trip journey from Calais of close to 2000km. That's the same distance as say Provence which I've driven to several times but wouldn't dream of doing in a long weekend. ...
