Dacia Sandero - skidpan

After 6 years with his Micra dad has decided a new car is on his new year "to do" list. 3 of his last 4 cars have been Nissans (Primera, Almera and Micra) and during that time the only part that has been replaced has been a rear wheel cylinder on the Almera and the only warranty jobs have been a lock circlip on the Almera and a faulty electric window switch on the Primera, to say he is happy is an understatement.

We have looked on the web and decided to have a look at the Sandero. Being a bit selfish I persuaded him that he needs the top spec with the petrol turbo since if he gives up motoring in the short term (he is 86 next week) it might as well be a car that me and the Mrs could happily use. At just under £9000 its less than he paid for the Micra 6 years ago.

Popped into the showroom today and what a disapointment. With the seat in my usual driving position (I am 5ft 9" tall and a perfectly normal build) there was virtually no legroom behind the seat for anyone in the rear. In comparson the Micra is spacious.

Considering all the reports I have read comment how spacious they are I just wonder if they employ former jockey's as test drivers.

Off to look at the Kia Venga next, the base models just under £10000 and has all the kit he wants. Having looked at it before when the Mrs Ceed was in for a service we know it has plenty of space and of course the 7 year gaurantee. As I said, since the Mrs has a Kia already we know the dealer so lets hope he wants to do a deal.

If your mother or father has a Blue Badge, ask at Hyundai and Kia dealers about additional discount - I've no idea of current levels, if any, but I got an extra 14% of my Santa Fe in 2011.

I did find the Sandero spacious but only when compared to other new cars for similar money (eg. the suzuki alto, nissan pixo, ford ka, etc).

I presume the Sandero Stepaway is alot more spacious? Think it starts from £8,000 but has alot more kit than the basic Sandero and has the turbo petrol engine as standard.

If rear leg room is an issue consider an end of production previous A class. It won't be new, but you will get one with low mileage for just over £9k and enough rear legroom to have a party!

After spending nothing in repairs for the last 20 or so years there is no way I am going to suggest they buy a 2nd hand Merc of an old design that never had a good thing said about it.

rear leg room is not critical, its just nice for people to be able to sit in the back without being sqashed. The Micra is big enough and it is not a big car. The Sandero is bigger but has less space, well it does for rear passengers

We asked about the Stepway. Another £700 I think. They did not have one in but the sales chappy said it was basically identical but a bit higher off the road in an attempt to look like an off roader.

Thanks for that tip, mother has a Blue Badge, will ask when we go.

If they hang on for a month or two, the new Hyundai i10 will be with us, and it's been very well reviewed. Or they could probably get a good deal on the current model: my daughter has been very pleased with her i10 1.2 after four Toyota Yarises.

If they hang on for a month or two, the new Hyundai i10 will be with us, and it's been very well reviewed. Or they could probably get a good deal on the current model:

We had briefly considered the i10 but the boot is simply too small. The Micra boot holds the fold up wheel chair, the wheeled walker and a bit of shopping, just. Anything smaller is out.

Its just a shame that the current Micra has been so poorly received since its introduction plus the prices are stupid. The 1.2 basic model is just over £10,000, add in A/C and a decent colour and its £11,000. A chap down the street has one and the interior is very cheap to look at.

The other thing we have to consider is mum being able to get in and out. The Almera had to go when it became too difficult and was replaced by a Jazz which was OK for about 4 years then that became too difficult. When they bought the Micra it was on a shortlist of 2 cars which were perfect for mother, the other was the old Ford Fusion. Its not just the seat height, its the angle of the base and the distance from the door cill to the seat that are just as important.

Maybe I should spend my time convincing him to keep the Micra instead of looking for another car. Its in excellent condition, fault free and has only done 20,000 miles in 6 years.

What you say about the distance from seat t door sill is interesting - a measurement that one might not think about until a disabled person tries to get in or out. I'd have guessed that the Jazz would be ideal, with the tall doors - but clearly not.

I expect you'll measure the next Hyundai up (i20) and the Venga (and Skoda Fabia or SEAT Ibiza?), but your last para might be the answer! If dad is a fit 86 with some years of driving in him, and keen on a change, he won't want to keep the Micra - but if he knows he can't drive for much longer he'll be easier to persuade. Good luck!

The distance from seat to ground may be more significant for the less able - if a specific family member needs to be taken into account then take them round a few showrooms and at least establish the height ballpark you need to choose from.

My Santa Fe is ideal for me - with drivers seat on it's lowest setting I can simply stand by the door, put one leg in and then slide my backside across onto the seat - but others will need all sorts of different ideal heights.

I have found this website good for when you need to know particular sizes of something:

http://www.rica.org.uk/content/car-search

It seems to have most cars and you can get a lot of information you can't get easily elsewhere.

Why not stick with Nissan and buy the last of the old Note or the brand new shape Note?

The old one is proven as a reliable spacious small MPV, you can pick them up very competitivly priced on a 13 or 63 plate.

Alternativly, buy the brand new shape Note, I have already noticed discounts bring down the base model to £10,000.

Plus, not only are you buying a good car with lots of space in a small package BUT you are also supporting British workers buying a car built in this country.

Get a Citroen Berlingo Multispace and be done with it. good ride, plenty of room for a wheelchair + passengers and cheap to run.

Dacia Sandero - lordwoody

My father had endless trouble with a Berlingo, and lots of stress trying to deal with a main Citroen dealer too. He traded it in for a Jazz and never had any more problems.

Dacia Sandero - skidpan

The old Note is out, mother could not get in and out 6 years ago. The seat height was perfect, it was the gap from the cill to the seat. Will have a look at the new one.

The Berlingo is out, dad had a Renualt many years ago and when it was 3 years old even the Renault dealer would not take it in PX. Vowed never to have a French car again. At 86 I am not going to try and change his opinion.

Jazz is out, they had one for almost 5 years, never had a problem and the dealer was pretty good as well. But the seat was shaped such that mother found it very difficult to get out 6 years ago and the new ones have visually the same seats.

Bizzarre thing is whatever car we buy mother seems to be able to get in and out fine. C-Max was perfect, no touble with the Ceed, even the new model Leon which looks lower has seats that mother finds relatively easy to access.

Please let us know what you end up with and why.

I spotted another new Note today, looks more sleaker than the old model.

Dacia Sandero - Avant

If the Leon is OK for your mum, it could be looking good fof the Ibiza: basic ones start at about £10,000.
