I have recently downsized from my BMW 320i to an A3 Sportback 1.4 petrol with the 140bhp cylinder on demand engine, and would like to find H.J.`s guidance on the correct procedure to running in this vehicle, without over stressing the engine too early? Read more
Hi,
I have bought a Vauxhall Vectra 1.8 (2000) with a x18xe1 engine.
Much of the time idling is very rough and occsionally the car stalls when idle. Lights will dim and RPM will jump around between 300 and 1200. Engine management light is on. Strong petrol smell when idle inside the car.
I also took it for an 80 mile motorway trip yesterday and the temperature sensor was permanently in the blue, it did move up and down within the blue slightly but never above. Heaters blow slightly warm but not hot. ... Read more

So theres two issues with these engines then. The balancer shaft and then the hex coupling.
Think ill steer clear then its not worth the risk
Hi, I purchased my 2000 Micra K11 automatic, engine 998 s, 5dr few months ago. The car ha 80k mile but was rinning great. It passed MOT in Feb 2013.
The problem is that I now have no gears and the car behaves as it was in N. Engine starts with no problems and when selector is moved to R, D or L you can hear engine RPM change. When I cycle back from D to P I can hear slight grinding noise as if something was not locking properly. When the car is in D ( still not driving) and I press on the gas pedal the spedo is moving as if indicating that the car was driving. I changed transmission oil (3 L of Dex II) and still nothing. I performed the self diagnostic test to identify the fault and the first blink was the longest indicating that the vehicle speed sensor is short/disconnected. I checked connection of everything I could find on the gearbox and still not driving. I also read that the powder brushes may be the culprit but I could not locate them (they are not on the front of the gearbox next to the gearbox oil dipstick as it is shown in the Haynes K11 manual). I also tried to find the vehicle speed sensor on the internet but the only thingh I found for K11 is the ABS speed sensor and vehicle speed sensor for vehicles made after 2001/2002.... Read more
Can anyone suggest a reason why they came out?
Think you answered that yourself. They are obviously the incorrect ones for the car....
I posted a while ago ref a problem I was having with the car alarm. I was given good advice and a suggestion by RJ of where I could purchase the power sounder needed to resolve the problem.
Before I purchase this part for the alarm, I have another little issue which may or may not be associated.... Read more
Hi guys,
I took on board your suggestions and have had the Alarm Power Sounder replaced. The mechanic also checked all the relays in the fuses but could not find any faults. The hazard lights on the right hand side still do not flash every time when I lock or unlock the car.....and today the alarm went off again when I started the car!! so it was obviously not the power sounder at fault....
I think one of my auxiliary drivebelt pulleys may be on its way out.
There is a squeak on idle which goes if I rev the engine. The belt is definately not slipping. It seems to be worse when it's cold or damp and sometimes quietens down when the engine has heated up. I can't tell exactly which pulley is squeaking but it's one of them for sure.... Read more
Last winter, I was getting a loud crackling noise from my CMax on cold mornings which disappeared after a few minutes once a little heat had been generated. On really cold frosty mornings it sounded like there was sparking coming from the alternator area.
Having discounted the alternator as the cause, I sprayed some water over the belts to test. There are two belts, the main alternator/water pump one and one for the air con compressor. The noise was coming from the compressor belt (the noise went for a few seconds whilst wet). This belt is of the stretchy kind, so no adjustment possible and it looked perfectly OK when I removed it, but a new one cured the problem. The replacement was a Continental.
i have 2 messages on my dash ,clear particle filter and check injector, what is wrong with car as it starts and drives ok.
anybody else know what could be the problem of this.
Hi,
I wondered if anyone could help with a radio code for a Ford Fiesta. Serial code is MO40651. The Code listed in the manual is incorrect. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks. Read more
hi my mazda has developed a problem with the ignition, it basically goes on fire periodically.
also I recently replaced the timing belt that charges the battery and 6 weeks later it has snapped again.... Read more
yeah probably not the best opening lines I have to admit. and I prob should have wrote it out first and read it.
anyway the reasonn why i "posted first" is in my relatively small experience with MSL garages in ireland is they find more problems than you actually have. also if I could get in the general ball park area ie, alternator, coil or whatever would seem to be the closest....
Hi; This is the first time I have used this site so I hoep I am getting this right?
My daughter has a ford fiesta and has lost the code for the radio. It's a 4500 eon and the reg no' is CA05cwp. How do I find the code no' though?... Read more
You need the serial number of the radio to obtain the code. This will be given on a label which is stuck to the radio casing, but you will need to pull the radio out of the dashboard sufficiently to be able to read the label.
Alternatively, some radios will reveal the serial number by pressing buttons 1 and 6 (or perhaps 2 and 5) together....
