Hi all. My Vectra has developed a strange misfire. It starts fine and accelerates fine when cold, but when it is hot there is a misfire that is especially obvious when accelerating from 2500 rpm. There is no fault light, economy is not affected, but the misfire is starting to creep down the rev range. It only happens when the car is moving. When stationary the tickover and throttle pedal response are fine. Is it coil pack, MAF sensor or a vacuum leak?

My focus which has done 72k has started cutting out without warning during normal driving every 2-3 weeks. This is potentially extremely dangerous as I could easily be shunted/hit by following vehicle . All warning lights come on but the car will restart immediately and drive Normally fora couple of weeks before it happens again. The locaL ford garage has found nothing so far and has reprogrammed the Ecu but the fault has happened again. Any ideas would be welcome as I can't trust the car at present. Thanks

Hi oscarcornwall
If believe this car as the same engine as the Mazda 3 .16 Turbo Diesel....
My father-in-law drives an Avensis auto. After advice, when at traffic lights and he has to wait he puts the parking brake on, and the gearbox into neutral. Is this right? I have told him it is as he doesn't dazzle the driver behind and I thought it to be less wear on the brakes and gearbox. However, his wife thinks this is vey wrong and he should simply use the footbrake. Any opinions ? All replies would be gratefully received.. Read more
I always shift to N at a stop such as a red light. If I'm approaching a stop, I shift into N for the last few yards...
and then after stopping with the footbrake, put the parking brake on and release the footbrake....
My mate told me I didn't have to use my own GP for my HGV medical. He recommended the Manchester LGV Clinic (tel 0161 613 7705) who were great. Only charged me £60 and gave me an appointment within days. My GP wanted £150 and asked me to wait 3 weeks!
Apparently they cover the North West. You can get more details at www.manchesterlgvclinic.co.uk
If you know of any cheap HGV medicals around the UK, post their details on this thread. There's no reason why we should pay our GPs more than we have to!

A quick browse on Trucknet brings up this, though there are several doctors listed in various parts of the country apart from this linked site.

Hi, Can anyone suggest anything sensible thats got a "proper" automatic gearbox has a reasonably high seating position, not too big, cheap, and can deal with potholes, raised junctions, sleeping police men, speed cushions etc. as I am really not enjoying driving anymore, my current little "tide us over" Hyundai Getz ( my Touran recently died die to a blown turbo followed by gearbox failure) is like me getting shaken to bits, and doesn't know which is the best gear to be in, i'm thinking of driving in a bubble wrap suit. Any ideas? Read more
I second G 's suggestion of Subarus. Non-turbo versions of the Forester and lower powered versions of the Legacy or Out back have superb rides.
Could anybody please tell me if this engine is likely to be powerful enough for the new estate : 1.2 TSI 85 PS. It is the cheapest option available, and I have some doubts - even for a slow driver like me? Read more
Checked while I was at Tesco, in the Golf the 122 PS model appeared to be back. Rang dealer when I got home, he says the 122 PS engine is not the chain driven one, its a variant of the new 140 PS belt drive unit.
I then downloaded a brochure. It only mentions the technical details of the new 140PS varant but looking at the specs at the back the 122 PS has the same bore/stroke as the old 122 PS car i.e. they are both totally different to the new belt drive unit....
Could anybody please tell me which of the folowing Golf engines is likely to prove the most reliable : TDi 105PS or the petrol TSi 122PS?
I have heard that previous Golf petrol engines were prone to timing problems, and the catalogue of diesel engine problems on this forum is scary.... Read more
1.9TDI - generally a fantastic engine which is bombroof (if a little noisy!).
Hi, on 3 occasions in last six months about 2 months apart each, just after I have filled up my diesel fuel tank I have heard a pump running type noise which appears to be coming from the rear of the car. It only lasts for the first couple of minutes after driving away from the station and there are no warning lights etc - any ideas? Performance is fine. Any advice as to what the part might be (yes I am female;)!!!) is it expensive? Shall I ignore it until it becomes a more frequent issue? Turn the radio up? Thanks in advance:) Read more
Thanks gents I will see how it goes on.
Bit of a legal query this time.
My daughter parked her car up our road which is on a hill. Later that evening a neighbour knocked to say another car had rolled into it. Sure enough it had. Folded up the front spoiler as wing of the other car and pushed my daughter's onto the pavement. Lucily my daugher had parked with her wheels facing 'out' which prevented the other car rolling down the hill. I can appreciate the other owner being puzzled how this happened but now after 4 months she's claiming against my daughter's insurance. They are now charging her an extra 50 pounds on renewal and say all companies do this. My daughter was also 200 miles away at Uni when this happened. What can she do?... Read more
No more details. We notifyed her insurers that there was no damage to her car and we were not claiming. They say the hike is because she is statistically likely to have an accident within the year of incident (as someone mentions elsewhere).

Turned out to be the VVT system, pulley on inlet cam shot.
