Rather than lose this in the Cyclists/Law thread it seemed clearer to start a new topic

My OH's A3 has developed a loud noise which I can best describe as sounding like the exhaust dragging on the ground, which it isn't.
I've checked the mountings, the central mount welds are OK and the system seems secure. Its more noticable in motion, In very loud if you wind down the passenger window, and noticable to passer by's! Not convinced it is the exhaust.... Read more
For future reference for anyone else with a similar problem I found a rather large stone trapped above the silencer and beneath the heatshield, loose enough to rattle around.

A clogged air filter won't make any difference on an injected car as far as emissions go.
If the lambda sensor is dirty or faulty, it'll crop up in your emissions test since lambda is estimated by the gas analyser....

I have a focus 2.0 diesel (Dec 2005) which has developed an intermittent fault causing the cruise control to stop working. The cruise control fault is preceded by an ‘Engine Systems Fault’ warning message for a few seconds.
The problem occurs on most journeys. I have noticed that the fault often occurs when steering to the left and when I press the decrease speed button on the cruise control. The cruise control works properly up to the point when the warning message shows, thereafter it will not activate, until re-starting the engine.... Read more
Yes most likely.
The Ford live diagnostics equipment is able to find error codes in addition to the static codes generated by general code readers, they will be able to confirm the exact trigger of the Engine System light.
Hi all; I currently have a daily round trip commute of just 13 miles/30 minutes. I worry that this may not be long enough to properly warm up my car's engine. At weekends I drive slightly more, at most 40-45 miles per day. Total: plus/minus 8,000 per year. The question is can I do anything to reduce wear and tear on the engine from these short trips. Thanks guys! Read more
Yes, I realize it has sort of morphed from a car into icon and therefore will be supported for a long time, but you never know. Look at what happened to Citroen XM in Europe. The last year of its production was 2000 and you can barely obtain anything when it comes to spares for that model. Now, take a Merc E-Class, BMW 5 or an Audi A6 for that matter. You can order anything and anytime for those German cars and choose from a huge variety of OEM parts. But for Citroen XM ? No sir, sorry sir, we no longer support this model. Yes sir, even though we've been manufacturing it for 15 years or so. Yes sir, even though it definitely was an icon. Sorry sir.
Catch my drift ?
Having changed the rear calipers and pads I find the handbrake comes up over twice as far [seven clicks] than before. The set up is self adjusting like mondeo, any ideas will be grateful Read more
If the handbrake levers on the calipers ar not returning fully to their stops the calipers will not self adjust
One caliper at a time hold the lever back on the stop and get someone to press the footbrake a few times and do the same with the other caliper...
Is there a recommended vacuum pressure, and time when regasing aircon, or is it just a matter of creating any vaccum, which confirms all gas is extracted? Read more
The real world takes it about 30 mins and is just topped up I agree there is a proper way but you will rarely find anybody practicing it,
You have to, to get around the parked cars!
