Is there a recommended vacuum pressure, and time when regasing aircon, or is it just a matter of creating any vaccum, which confirms all gas is extracted?

Its just a system similar to a domestic fridge it is filled with gas to a certain pressure (recommended by the manufacturer of the car) normaly R1234a in new cars although there are different types being used the fitter uses a set of gauges so he gets the correct pressure the gas comes in a cannister. Why would you want to extract gas it is very expensive and you are not supposed to let it out into the air.

The optimum vacuum pressure is -1 bar..The vacuum programme is done after the existing gas (if any) is removed from the system. The length of time required for the vauum process depends on the type of work that is being done to the car.A basic regas of the system where it is currently working,a time of between 15 and 30 mins would be adequate.A more complex job where the system has been unused or open to the elements,or a contaminated system or a car with double a/c (front and rear) would need much longer.hth

System should be degassed, then vac down and held to prove system integrity. In an ideal world the system would then be flushed with dry nitrogen (again held at a positive pressure to prove system integrity), re vacuumed the topped up with fridge gas/oil mix.
Just topping up could be a mistake. If the stystem has lost gas, the LP side could have been operating at less than atmospheric and drawing in air/moisture both of which are not good in the system (moisture can freeze and block small capilliaries and air severely compromises the refigeration capacity of the gas).
Any fridge engineer will not let gas out into atmosphere, it is recovered and accounted for.

In the real world they just top them up what they should do is another matter.

Collos, your post asked the question "why would you want to extract gas....". I simply answered it.

Your "expert" approval of just topping up is wrong, it may be what you get, but it's wrong.

Adding gas (R134A) to a contaminated system may see some improvement, though of course if moisture is present from ingested air, having gas in the system could cause further problems. The system will chill down the moisture, freeze it and block the system at the expansion device leading to high HP pressures (refrigerant leaks, overheating) and low LP pressures (air ingestion).

The real world takes it about 30 mins and is just topped up I agree there is a proper way but you will rarely find anybody practicing it,

ideally the vacuum would be held for about 30 mins unless circumstances suggest otherwise (see above answers). Doing so not only proves system integrity, but the vacuum will 'boil' off any moisture in the system.

Bear in mind that this 30 mins is garage time that must be paid for. A cheap "regass" will probably just be a top up. Doing it properly costs extra!!!

Simply adding gas can turn your car into a time bomb !
1st you never know what gas has been added before ! I have seen some cars with iceon 49 gas and propane gas !!!! So if there is any air there or air added when topped up it goes bang ! I have seen a whole front end literally blown off a car from a doggy re-gas

It's recovered using a recovery unit ! It's illegal to " just let it out " and I test the gas for contaminates, it's illegal to fill a system if its suspected of leaking and has to be nitrogen tested 1st .

The longer the vacuum the better, I will often leave over night vacc,d up and regas in the morning.
