been having the same problems with n reg escort van. in the morning she will start and rev, then die which results in much engine turning over until she fires up again, then when driving sudden loss of power in any gear and lumpy running particularly at low to half throttle. the garage said this was due to a leak in the fuel return line and suggested a non return valve.i pointed out that this would only solve the morning starting difficulties. so we replaced the lift pump. no joy. so as a last gasp effort i dropped the fuel tank, lo and behold the out take pipe on the fuel sender unit was full of corrosion and holes. checked inside the tank as far as i could with a mirror and torch, no holes despite the rust on the outside. ford wanted £70 for a sender unit f*** that, found one at kitspares.co.uk listed as a sierra fuel sender, £20. fitted, working, problem solved. you would not believe the corrosion on top of the fuel tank, still nothing new there from a ford!!!!!!

Hi all,

Can anyone clarify the rules surrounding fitting a replacement speedometer to a vehicle.... Read more

They have a better system in the states. Something called the Federal truth in mileage act IIRC. If you order a replacement speedometer from a parts supplier you have to send them your old speedometer. The new one comes to you with your old mileage on. They can tell if your old one has been tampered with.

Just yesterday I bought a mint condition ford escort sport. (Not everyones cup of tea i know)

The car sounded and drove pefectly for the first 100 miles of the 110 miles home, however in the last 10 it missed a few beats whilst on the motorway, it felt as though it was running out of fuel and It also began to sound tappety. Also the lights went very dim, as if they were on sidelight when they were not.... Read more

I'll try to keep this brief but would really like some advice.

Last Monday my wife was driving home at 9:20 pm having collected my 11 year old son from Scouts. She makes this journey several times a week and is entirely familiar with the roads and junctions. It was a dark but clear night and the roads were wet due to recent rain. Her route takes her through a country lane, left onto a B road through the village for about 150 yd and then right into our street just before the B road narrows to single lane.... Read more

We haven't heard from Hub for 2 years, and I don't think we will now.

Hi

My 51 plate focus zetec (1.6 petrol) has just broken down with what seems to be a problem fuel pump. This is the third time it has happened in about 15 months.... Read more

..... but there does seem to be an increasing problem

with fuel pumps failing, maybe due to the complexity of today's fuel systems ?...

Had two new tyres today and was told that the front pads are down to 4mm.

The car is in for service next week. Should I get them replaced? If not how many more miles will they run safely for?... Read more

I would replace at 2mm

My wife drives a 53 plate Jeep and finds it often stays in 1st gear for some time after she drives off, I think this may have something to do with the oil temp but does anyone know about the subject and can shed soem light on the problem. Read more

Re the battery changeover, we had the battery changed by the gearbox specialist ( who comes highly recommended as a genuine guy) and had fixed a similar problem in our nephews much newer jeep last year,he looked at the Jeep and said a code was showing for a Camshaft sensor fault and he knew of other issues with the low battery charge. Searching the websites I found a few comments regarding this fault which a number mentioned created other problems . Having arranged with another garage to have the sensor replaced I found when driving home that the engine management light went off and the gears changed up and down perfectly. It was out in the snow last night and again worked perfectly. needless to say we are not bothering to have the camshaft sensor changed . So having had the gearbox oil changed and a new battery the jeep is running perfectly.

i am looking to change my aging Passat for a Mondeo TDCi, around the 2005 era. It seems that it is essential that the clutch and flywheel have been changed or if not the cost of doing so should be factoring in to the price. Why is this a problem on this model, (some i have seen needed it at 40K miles) and does replacement cure the issue, or is it an every 80K miles job? I understand it's about £700 to do Read more

My tucson 2.0crtd cdx on an 05 (111bhp) is ready for its 70,000 service which also involves a cambelt change... I have been quoted between £566 and £790, apparently it is a pig of a job and takes 7 hrs. This is astonishing, £550 labour costs at one place. So am I going to be ripped of or are these prices about right...at those prices I may have a go myself. Read more

8 years late to reply, but....from what I've read, then engine has to come out to do the timing belt! Was considering doing the belt on my old man's Tucson, but now I know this, no thankyou :)

Just realised i put this in the Motoring discussion forum, whoops.

My sister has a 99 Toyota Yaris and i am trying to change the fuel filter but cannot seem to find it. There is a black 'box' mounted to the bulkhead just to the right of the engine that one of the fuel lines runs into but i cant see any way of undoing it. It seems to be the right size though.

Can anyone help? Read more
