SPEEDOMETER REPLACEMENT RULES - GR8GUY

Hi all,

Can anyone clarify the rules surrounding fitting a replacement speedometer to a vehicle.

Ive checked VOSA online mot history and discovered that the mileage on mine is incorrect. Guessing it's been speedo change. Can you just get a speedo from a scrapyard with lower mileage, fit it and pass it off as lower mileage ?

If there are no legal rules it would clearly be open to abuse. Are there any DVLA rules on this ?

If the mileage is changed in any way the vendor is under a duty to inform the buyer before the sale takes place - but the rules are sloppy and enforcement is poor.

Estimates are that the practice of clocking marks up vehicle values by £100m a year.

It's not hard to check previous mileage to spot major discrepancies and it is also done as part of most vehicle checks.

There are no rules, other than mis-description when selling, but most traders of older cars put a disclaimer sticker on the instrument cluster.

They have a better system in the states. Something called the Federal truth in mileage act IIRC. If you order a replacement speedometer from a parts supplier you have to send them your old speedometer. The new one comes to you with your old mileage on. They can tell if your old one has been tampered with.
