Nissan Qashqai - Wear depth - when do I replace front brake pads? - Halmer

Had two new tyres today and was told that the front pads are down to 4mm.

The car is in for service next week. Should I get them replaced? If not how many more miles will they run safely for?

How many miles has it done from new?

When were the last pads fitted ? (if any).

How many miles a year do you drive?

Answer the above and I can guesttimate...

This vehicle has wear sensors on the pads when it lights up on the dash change them,4mm is quite a lot of material but to how long they will last see above answer.

Sorry should probably have posted this in Technical.

1.6 petrol, 3 years old, 19,000 from new, do about 8,000 a year. Only done 19,000 because I couldn't drive it much in the first year due to health isue.

I think new pads have around 8mm of material.

Pads are recommended to be replaced before they get to 2mm.

Do the maths and decide yourself!

As a rule of thumb i replace when the braking material is the same thickness as the back plate it's bonded to.

As this will be good enough to stop you and any less will eventually wear into the disc.

Same for brake shoes.

whilst I'm generally against overservicing, the pads should be replaced at 3mm, so I'd get them done when it's serviced next week unless you're handy enough with the spanners to do them yourself when they really need it.

The OP is doing 8k miles/year.

He has worn approx 4mm in 19k miles..

So another 6 months will wear approx 4 mm x 4/19 miles which is less than 1 mm... taking it to over 3mm in 6 months time.

I rest my case. 6 months time. Inspect again.
