I've done just over 5,000 miles in the Astra 1.3 diesel estate that I mentioned on here 4 or 5 months ago and I must get round to posting a review. So far, it hasn't needed an oil top-up, but I am at a loss in finding the correct spec oil to use when it is needed. The 'Owner's Manual' says that I should refer to the 'Service Booklet', whilst the 'Service Booklet' suggests that I should refer to the 'Owner's Manual'. The (main dealer) entries in the Service Booklet state simply 5/30 used, but with no more information than that, and I came across one website that mentioned 5/40 though I'm not sure of the reliability of that one.
Can anyone suggest the correct spec oil to use, or a reliable website that could give the answer?... Read more
Is it possible for an independent garage's diagnostic equipment to pick up no faults when the Engine Management Light on my Citroen C3 is on? At the very least I would expect some sort of unknown code which only Citroen could decipher.
Three weeks ago a flashing Engine Management Light came on my dashboard - my C3 went into low revs and I took it straight to my local gagarge. They diagnosed 4 "unknown" faults and suggest that I took it to a Citroen dealer.... Read more
Hi, i have citroen c3 2005.engine management light comes on after heavy rain and just when you think you've gotten use to it bleeping every time you switch on the ignition..it dissapears again ! local garage told me its the crappy sensors on the catalyltic convertor but theres nothing wrong with the cats themself..this has been happening for the best part of two years ,no problems car runs fine...
I have just been provided with a replacement price of £1500 from a main dealer. Is this about right? Can i get this done any cheaper?

Hi, we have a 52 Reg Nissan Almera Tino which has been causing us some big problems since earlier this year. On starting the engine, it can sometimes take up to 60 seconds before the engine will turn over. When it does start, clouds of white smoke come from the exhaust. When the car is started, it runs perfectly. The problem appears to be particularly bad if cold/damp/wet. One thing that we have realised (and this explains why we've been able to be so lazy about fixing the problem...) is that if the car is parked facing downhill, it starts first time. This is becoming less reliable though as the weather gets wetter and colder..
If the information helps, on one occassion when I phoned the AA to start it, he 'manually primed' the fuel pump (?) and it started straight away. It has been to 3 different garages (including a main Nissan Dealership) none of whom have been much help. The glow plugs have been changed (no difference). Despite several diagnostic tests the best advice we can get is that it MIGHT need a new fuel pump. They quoted us over £2k to get this fixed - considering the car only cost us 3,000, this isn't a descision we can make lightly.
Where do we go from here? Sell it? Fix it? Is there such a thing as a reconditioned fuel pump? How likely is it that it is the fuel pump? Please help, any advice would be gratefully appreciated... We're seriously considering webuyanycar.com!!!
Regards :-)

Drill a tiny hole (about 1 mm.) in the fuel tank cap
so you don´t have a vacuum in the fuel tank anymore....
I like the idea of these small capacity low pressure petrol turbos, given the capacity why have VW gone for four cylinders? Forgetting internal friction, the power pulses from a 3 pot are much more suited to turbo charging applications, improving spool up and turbo efficiency. I guess camshaft grinding is much cheaper as it only needs to be done on two planes! Come on chaps give us the engine we want, high CR three pot with low pressure turbo - that would be a peach and one step closer to chucking complicated nasty sooty diesels on the sc-r-a-pheap. The 1.2 4 pot engine has now all but been replaced by the 1.0 3 pot in all VAG cars except (as far as I have spotted) the Leon where both the 1.2 and 1.0 are offered. I cannot see VAG offering the engine much longer....
Hello
I spun off a roundabout tonight and called the breakdown as my car wouldn't start after it hit the kurb, the recovery guy has said it's my fuel cut off switch that needs resetting - but he couldn't find it. ... Read more
Hi All,
The problem actually turned out to be the fuel filter - someone fitted the wrong one to my car (wait till I get hold of them!) ...
i purchased a warranty with warranty direct and had to claim two weeks ago. they have phoned me today telling me that they have recieved their engineers report and they are not covering me because the turbo blew up through wear and tear. my policy with them covers wear and tear , turbo etc with no get out clauses Read more
I had a gearbox fali on an A8 8 days after having a through pre trip service by an Audi main dealer. After some inital calls WD refused to do anything until I had the gearbox disassembled for their engineers report (even through I got a formal letter from Audi UK stating that in their professional opinion this would not be a wear and tear item) - this would cost more than a replacement box and the wouldn't cover this cost.
After a 3 year battle going through their labyrinthine complainst procedure and complaining to the underwritters at Lloyds of London I eventually reached a 50/50 compromise....
Hi
Can anyone try and give me a few fresh ideas of why my fiat ulysse will not start, its a 2000 X JTD 8 Valve and the engine code is RHZ with a bosch ECU. I have done the usual stuff with these modern cars - i had a mobile guy come out and scan the car for codes. here is the rather long list he got:... Read more
Just to add to what has already been said, DO NOT PLACE A 12 VOLT SUPPLY TO AN INJECTOR/S ON ANY COMMON RAIL DIESEL. They are operated by the ECU by capacitor discharge and to feed them battery voltage WILL damage them. Also the pressure at the injectors can be as high as 30,000psi (1800bar), SO NEVER LOOSEN AN INJECTOR PIPE AS SERIOUS INJURY CAN OCCUR..
The engine will not start unless the fuel rail pressure reaches 10,000kpa, (1000bar) but remember, pumps do not create pressure. Pumps enhance flow, it is opposition to flow that creates pressure. If you are not achieving 10,000kpa it could be that the high pressure fuel pump is retuning fuel directly to the tank via the pressure regulator which might be stuck open. Or the in-tank pump might not be working. The fuel pressure sensor in the common rail could be faulty, or so could the fuel pump be....
Hi all,
had an oily smell coming into the cabin. When I looked, the larger of the 2 breather hoses from the rocker cover has completely blown apart. The insides of the hose have emulsion all around it too, but the car actually still drives fine.... Read more
these pipes are splitting for fun at the moment get yourself down to the dealer "its the only place that you will get one" ask them to change it under warrenty if they dont and ask you to pay then there is nowt lost as you were going to buy it anyway, i believe that they are splitting due to inferior quality,Regards TB

Is there a special type box spanner etc for the V14's on engine mount as there is very little room between chasis & engine mount. Loo forward to hearing from any body with advice as to where to obtain 1, i've tried all the usual places, vauxhall garage, machine mart local tool stockists!
Until recently Vauxhall had a page on their website that told you what oil they recommended, and now they don't.
This should tell you something, but what, I dunno....
