Hi, I've recently bought a diesel Peugeot 807 because I couldn't afford to run my very juicy 2 litre petrol automatic Mondeo. But guess what?! The Peugeot is just as bad!! I'm getting 24mpg, but apparantly I should be getting about 40! I've had a look round the internet and a few things to check seem to be air filter, tyre pressures and timing, but would any of these really cause such a dramatically poor mpg? Does anyone know what it might be? Read more

Oh right, yes, maybe it isn't regenerating like it should be - oh no, what a horrible thought :-( I was thinking that it just hadn't been looked after - no services, no eolys fluid left etc, but maybe not :-(

With the somewhat elementary credential of a 40+ yr old Physics 'A' level I'm afraid I must disagree with HJ's opinion that coasting uses more rather than less energy.

When the engine is 'idling', something has to keep it rotating whether it is fuel burning or part of the stored kinetic energy of the moving vehicle - which has originally been created by burning fuel.... Read more

Hi all,

after 4 days in a wet field i drove my car and the engine warning light came on. at first it flashed, then it just stayed on and ran fine.I took it to kwik fit who said it misfired and the catalytic converter was damaged. they turned off the light and i drove it home in the dry with no problems and no warning lights coming on. It was then left for a day again in torrential rain, and the next morning same problem, but i didnt move the car at all. I took it to another garage who read it and the reader said it was either an air flow problem or injector problem.... Read more

could it be that i got to sealing the leak too late and my injector or coil pack is damaged?

It's possible that the turbo blades have come into contact with the turbo housing & injected tiny pieces of metal into the intake system which could get ingested into the engine if driven.

Can someone give me some advice please?

Borrowed car from work last night (Focus TDCi 08) and put 8.5L of unleaded into the empty tank. Drove 6 miles home with no obvious signs of trouble. It was only when i jumped in car to get some milk this morning and i noticed it splutter slightly after about 30 metres that my mistake dawmed on me. Turned round and have now left it on my drive.

Obvious question is how much damage have I done? If i'd added petrol to a tank full of diesel I wouldn't be worried but as I say the tank was near on empty!!

I would of just brimmed with Diesel and added some addative, cheaper than AA/rac.
I would not of mentioned at work and if question raised about full tank you filled by mistake.
You may not be aware but the AA/RAC report misfuels back to the manufacture so a record is kept and if a failure arises in the future it could be traced back to a missfuel ! on record.
You would of been fine with a fill to the brim. It would of had a nice set of clean injectors.

What's your opinion on this question?

I do 25k/year and on average keep a car for 4 years. I've tended to look for cars with low mileages for their age (my last purchase was 20 months old with 7k on the clock.) This is done on the basis that depreciation kicks in regardless of mileage and I'll rack the miles up anyway. I suppose this shows that I view the working life of a car in terms of total mileage.... To be honest I dont like old and really low mileage cars. I've had a bit of experience of them and you tend to end up paying a premium for the ultra low mileage only to get other problems that are induced due to the 'stagnation' of the vehicle.

Cars degrade with age almost as much as they do with mileage a lot of the time.

I need a diesel for £3-4k and I have my eye on a number of 2.0L Mondeo TDCis at the moment: all 2002-2005 and between 70 and 100k mileage.

What routine servicing should have been carried out at, say, 70k/5 years? Am I right in thinking this car is timing chain equipped, but that the tensioners need replacing at certain intervals? Anything else to look out for/check?... Read more

Does anybody have any comments on diesel additives are they worth it or not? What are the benefits and which are the best? Read more

I agree absolutely with Brum and with several others who have E-mailed us.

Diesel additives are hardly a subject where insults need to be traded. Thread locked.
