i used to get around mid 40's to the gallon now im lucky to get over 32mpg.
iv had it on diagnostics today and the mass afm is slightly down but not by much.
what could it be, i gave it a full service when i bought it 5k miles ago.
also driving steady or driving fast it dosent seem to make a difference to how much fuel it uses.
im getting at tops if im lucky 150miles to £20.
there is no eml light when i put the ignition on but there were no fault codes either.
any help would be great
cheers Read more

It will depend a lot on how and where you drive it. I would think that to only get 40 mpg you will have been driving it in traffic or hard, you should be able to get 50+ on a long gentle journey, I get that from my Citroen XM whch wieghs about a ton and a half and has an IDI engine.

Temperature gauage not moving much after about 14 miles used to get to above 80 after ten minutes. And idears as to what could be at fault?.

my 1.7di van loses all power and just sits there at a fast idle of 1500rpm the throttle does nothing but press the brake pedal and the idle drops to 1000rpm release the brake and it goes back up to 1500 - pressing the throttle does absolutly nothing!
egr valve is ok i have fitted a new crank angle sensor and 4 new glowplugs on the advice of several "experts" but the fault is still there
any idease anyone?
some one suggested the mass air flow meter but how can i check this before i waste any more cash

Hello,
I have a Peugeot 406 1.9td and rev counter some times it drops to zero.I have read that there is a pick up sensor on the fly wheel but I can't find it.If some one knows the location exactly or can take a picture I will epriciate very much.

Is the one with 10mm bolt because when I removed it the revcounter still works when I tried that sensor.

I attached a picture and marked with cyrcle the sensor. Is this that pick up the signal?

A friend wants a ford transit or similar minibus LWB and is planning on taking out most of the seats and having some space at the back doors for the camping gear and stuff..

He's got 5x kids and the wife so ideally to be comfortable 7-8 seats is needed, the question is folks if he takes these seats out is it legal to drive ok? & when it needs the MOT will he have to fit the other seats back in or will they test it without?

The transit suits the bill it's so practical sliding door & roof rack for bikes where a 7 seater car is well a bit small. Read more

DVLA seems to class a vehicle as a minibus if it has between 9 and 16 seats. If he takes seats out, he would need to contact DVLA to re-classify the vehicle as having seven or eight seats as appropriate. They should then classify the vehicle as, presumably, a car.
When insuring the vehicle I guess he will need to declare the modification.

I'm pretty sure it was HJ who told us about potholes.co.uk. Well I've reported a chunk of road nearby where half the carriageway is subsiding into a nearby stream. 24 hours later I have an email from the council saying it's been inspected and it will be repaired "within 28 days". Amazing!

It goes without saying that the roads are currently worse than I have ever seen them. If I reported every pot hole on the drive into town I'd come across as somewhat obsessive. But repairs are being made. On one journey I started playing "spot the temporary traffic lights" there were so many holes being patched. At one point there were two men on "Go/Stops". The hole being patched was not going to take long enough to be worth getting the traffic lights out. At another point a workman was working in the middle of a junction filling a hole and - no cones /lights/nothing at all. Well, maybe a hard hat. He obviously didn't expect to be there for long. Of course we might ask how long these repairs will last... I didn't see any rollers or anything similar. But I'm sure the heaviest of the men gave the repair a good jumping on. Cynical - me? :-)

1.The head can be removed on this engine with the manifold still on.

2.It may be that someone has used sealer on the gasket;just make sure all the bolts/nuts are removed-there's one at the bottom underneath IIRC and apply a little force to break the seal.

Hi all, just like to say hello and what a great site this is!

im looking at buying a smallish and econimical car that isnt going to cost me a fortune in repairs. Ive only bought an older car once before and the gearbox had gone within 6 months so im doing my research and am very wary of unreliable cars now (Laguna!!!)

So far im considering:
Fiesta 1.4TDCI
Corsa 1.3CDTI
Clio 1.5DCI

Im thinking diesel as they are cheaper to run, i do about 15K miles a year. Are diesels more prone to failures than petrols?

I have 3K to spend and I dont really want to go any older than 02 reg and 90K miles.
Problem is everytime I start researching a type of car I just read about loads of problems and people saying do not buy!
Is anyone really experienced in buying older cars who can give some good advice?
Should I just get one of those private warranties from warranty direct so I have nothing to worry about?
Thanks in advance.
Kyle.

Hi - the cenral locking does not work from the key - although the battery was recently replaced - I have tried resetting from the ignition - no luck. Also the central locking has started locking itself and the manual does not work very well taking several attempts to unlock before success - you can imagine how frustrating this is on a cold winters morn! Your thought would be appreciated - is this going to be an expensive job?! Read more
