Hi can anyone help me with a problem i have with my navara d40.
The glow plug relay is staying on even without the key in the ignition!!??
I have tested the feed and there is 12v all the time.
If i leave the supply to the relay off my battery does not discharge.
Does the ECU control the relay and if so can i reset to see if this clears the fault??
Hope someone can help.
cheers Keith.

I cannot get the outer part of the bearing out of the hub. (the car has discs all round) I have tried drifting it out with a suitable sized socket, applying heat and pressing it out using a vice but it wont shift. Any ideas? The really stupid thing is that I have the car immobile on the drive blocking my van in so I cant go anywhere until I get this sorted!! Read more

Glad you got it sorted. Don't know if a MIG would apply enough metal, I have always used a stick welder.

Hi all

Just a quick query. Feeling annoyed with myself, as I decided to top up the oil in the i20 this morning and (with cold hands) managed to spill a fair amount of oil over the alternator - specifically on to the copper wire mesh just inside the circular structure. I mopped up the spillage as best as I could - but there is certainly some oil inside the alternator.

So, is this going to cause any problems and, if so, what would be the symptoms?

Many thanks in advance Read more

I used to design commercial vehicle alternators. An oil spill into the driven end of an alternator is no problem - the components are designed to resist all common automotive fluids.

A lot of oil at the other end could contaminate the brushgear, but an odd spillage is very unlikely to cause problems.

Don't allow any solvents such as brake cleaner near the machine. These are not classed as normal automotive fluids and could damage the enamel insulation on the windings. Oil is no problem at all - motorbike alternators run in it (but don't have brushes).

I am going to replace the clutch on my 2000 406 HDi 90.
I am getting everything prepared, and have come to a hurdle in terms of identifying which gearbox I have. The alernatives (according my trusty Haynes) are BE3/5, BE4/5 and ML5T.
How do I reliably identify which one of these variants I have?
Thanks in advance,
Kevin.

As far as I know your gearbox is a BE4R and doesn't need any funky special tools. You won't need a new flywheel either...

Hi

This has been one of my aims, ie to report banned, uninsured/etc drivers to cops.

i will follow through what police action was taken and then insist they act on my evidence which i will gather with a dvd cam.

Well done to the newspaper. this bloke and the alleged incident if true means that the bloke was uninsured/etc - so if the person smashes your car up, this creates masses of additional probs.

read and decide.

WoodsterTheGreat,

Not really sure what the point is you are making, as you are agreeing with what I said.

But it does stress the point that Pauls mission is flawed, because its not just a simple case of looking on MID or checking VED/MOT - this is exactly why the police are best placed to deal with this.

HI all, just thought that id update you all as to my buying or replacement plan for my ageing Octavia. I previously posted that i was considering an del miles Astra Est,fancied the 1.3 fiat chain cam. After considering all the advice i basically sat back & considered what to do next?????,let the old die hard run for another 3 months,& yes shes's still going sweet as.Bottom line was the Octavia due a test next month & she just wont pass as too many things to do that cost cash..
So went to UK last week with 10k to spend, viewed several auction houses,& was amazed.
Ended up bringing back a Skoda Superb,54 plate with 84k on,2.5 ELEGANCE & a 04 Primera estate,39000 on,2.2dci SE. Total cost inc bringing back to Isle of Man,8.2k
Both vehicles now through the statutory test,am intending using Superb as main vehicle,Primera as my personal car & spare taxi.Would welcome any info on what to look out for especially on the Primera, only 3 out of 150 taxis here are Primeras, none of the owners report major problems, but bought the Primera on impulse, due to price.
All information greatly appreciated Read more

Chesterfield borough council i think take the award for most unreasonable council.
They have just announced that all replacement wheelchair taxis have to be under 6mths old and it has to be wav .
No warning just right from now on your next vehichle has to be under 6mths old.
So my taxi that has 200k on clock has to do me next three year before they review this.
They have also capped number of hackneys at 110 but the only problem is they already have 178 hackneys.
We also have to take the new dsa driving test within 3 years even though i have done job 20 years.

Had a look at a Mazda3 2.0 petrol today 56 plate. Was for sale at a big independent franchise chain and was in good condition with just over 50k on the clock.

Something weird caught my eye under the bonnet which made me walk away:

At the back of the engine block was a silver coloured metal cover that initially ran horizontally with the engine block, before heading downwards, perhaps as if it was covering exhaust pipes (sorry I'm not mechanically minded if that wasn't obvious!)

Now, this metal cover was lumpy and buckled and in some places looked 'creased'. Was it damaged? Or was it normal? Or was it normal wear and tear due to engine heat?

Unfortunately, I haven't found a similar car locally to compare it to.

Any help would be much appreciated. Read more

Thanks everyone for your comments - much appreciated.

Having slept on it, I feel satisfied in my own mind that I did the right thing by walking away. As you say M.M, it would have been enough to play on my mind.

Oh, I did ask the salesman cheddar! He was honest enough to say he didn't know but did try to find out without any luck - he looked under the bonnet of a new shape 3 which looked very different so couldn't make a comparison.

The hunt for a new car continues...!

Simple question - how easy is it to fit brake pads and discs to my car? My Toyota dealership garage has quoted £316. Thinking of doing it myself - how much can I expect to pay to buy them and is it relatively easy to do?

Front, or front and rear?

Good aftermarket discs are about £16 each trade to me and Mintex front pads about £22. Plus vat.

Easy enough job if you are reasonably handy with spanners.

On a long (over 400 miles) motorway journey in France recently, where the Cruise Control was more or less permanently engaged, it dropped out on numerous occasions, mainly I believe after I had made some sort of adjustment to it. The car is a Ghia X TDCi built in January 2004, and does not appear to have any other problems.
I was cruising most of the way at around 65-70MPH, and as stated, the Cruise Control suddenly switched off, and there was a severe decrease in speed, almost as if the engine had cut out, but it came back on instantly when I re-set the Cruise Control. I am not sure about all of the times this happened, but I did notice on several occasions, that it happened after I had either just temporarily adjusted the speed using the "Increase or decrease speed butttons" or had switched it off for a moment, possibly by using the brake, and then switched it back on. Sometimes it happened several times in succession, and other times went many miles without occuring.
This did not seem to happen after I returned to the UK, even though I travelled a further 100 miles again using Cruise Control. I was however probably travelling slightly slower in the UK, more like around 60MPH.
Does anybody have any idea why this should have occured, and what is causing the problem. As you can imagine, this could potentially be very dangerous if it occured when being closely followed by another vehicle, since there is a marked decrease in speed. without any warning. Read more

This happened to me in the summer when driving across France, mainly on inclines, but not always. In the end I was so worried it might cause an accident I drove with my right foot - and 100 miles from Calais accidently let the speed reach 150kmh... I was caught by a radar trap. I did think I would be frog marched to the nearest cash machine to empty my bank account, but the fine was not high, perhaps my explanation and apology did the trick. No points either!

I reported the problem to the dealer (Nissan Primera) who re-set the onboard computer and this seems to have done the job - I've used the CC since in the UK without any problems, but not at 80mph as I don't want any points.

there is a micro filter deep down inside the pump under the inlet banjo pipe. The area needs to be spotless clean and great care taken, remove the banjo and make up a hook tool to with draw the filter, clean and refit. causes loss of power and a stutter and acrid blue grey smoke !

There was a post a few weeks ago and the guy did the above and he posted back to say yep it fixed it. he did admit it was a fiddle and I think if you find the post there is more detail.
