having sold up and bought a small bungalow it came with rather a large garage with 8x6 U&O garage door - all my other garages had wooden side openers and my ambition in life was to have an electric opening door -- Well I have now - just fitted a door opener and it's best thing since sliced bread - it's 24vDC as opposed to older 240v one's which means you can program the speed it close's - so start and stop can be made soft open/close and also it will stop if obstructed.
Who else has a door opener and do you think it's great or just part of your garage. Read more
How big is an ideal garage a single is not of much use many can drive in just can't open the doors! lol.
A double or a triple would be my next choice of course room permiting.
How high would you have it enough for a 2x post ramp?
With a bench all tools tyre machine compressor these alone take up plenty of room so may need a triple!
What is your ideal garage? size/height?
What do you want it for? car canopy or repairs or just for somewhere to dump the stuff? like many are used for. Read more
Three linked together...32 ft X 18ft did have a 24X18 car port where the caravan now lives.

Been lurking on the forum for a few weeks now. Apologies for dragging this one up again but, despite the amount of debate on the topic, I am still confused!
I have just been promoted at work; part of the deal is a car or cash. At the moment I am taking the cash - £4590 gross p.a. (£382.50 p.m.) so, at 40% tax, I am getting approx £230 pm extra in the bank.
At the moment I am running a Passat Estate TDI on a PCP - payments are £335 pm. I estimate servicing/insurance/tyres/etc to be a further £100 pm. In truth, we dont need such a large car anymore (no more prams!) and would enjoy the peace of mind/ease of budgeting a company car brings. We absolutely dont want to run a car outside manufacturer warranty.
We are looking at a new VW Golf 1.4 GT TSI (5 dr, DSG). On our scheme I would have to trade up by £100 p.m., and the tax at 40% is about £80 p.m.
For the purposes of this, please can we assume:
1. I currently clear £2500 per month in the bank (including the £230 from the car allowance).
2. I am a 40% tax payer.
3. I am a 'perk' driver; although my employer pays business mileage, I do not do any business miles. So I dont think this has any impact on calculations?
4. I do 13,000 miles p.a. - and get no mileage from employer for this.
Please - pretty please - can someone tell me how much my £2500 per month will reduce by, if I take this car?
Many thanks,

Thanks all for your comments - much appreciated.
Seems to be a really difficult decision!
In actual fact I earn nearly £60k - but I dont pay tax on about £20k of this due to tax-free allowance from HMRC and I also make childcare/pension/sharepurchase contributions via salary sacrifice. Suppose you cant have it both ways!
Our payround is in Feb - and a £3k bonus would move me (just!) into 40% territory. Think I will wait until then before I decide. God forbid I actually got a payrise!?
A brand new battery has been sitting on my garage floor for the last 12 months. It was bought in error for my previous Micra and was never used (it turned out that my old car needed a new alternator).
As the battery on my current Micra seems to be a bit sluggish in turning the engine over, I charged the "brand new" battery up 2 days ago, on overnight charge.
Today, I fitted the new battery. It started the car up with no problems, but the dashboard showed a "battery low" light that went out immediately when I started the engine.
This normally doesn't happen. The "battery low" light is usually never shown.
Is this expected behaviour when fitting a new battery? Will I have to take the car out and fully charge it up (I'm snowed in at the moment)? Battery was over 13 Volts with the engine turned off.
Thanks

If the Bosch showed full in an hour that indicates low capacity. If you are
charging at say 10 amps and the battery is 50ah it should take approx 5
hours to fully charge. To be fully charged in an hour indicates a capacity of
only 10ah (assuming a 10a charge rate)
Yes. But the Bosch wasn't fully discharged. It was still capable of firing up the engine 1st time, but sounded "on the way out" to my inexperienced ears.

Hi,
I am having trouble unlocking my KA in both the driver and passenger door. The key fits in the lock but I am unable to turn it, it has slowly got worse to the point where it doesn;t move at all.
At the moment I am having to get in through the boot, which works fine but is very embarrasing when you are stuck in Sainsburys car park!!
Once I am in the car and the key is in the ignition the doors unlock themselves and stay unlocked, locking the doors is not a problem at all.
I have tried my spare key and this does exactly the same thing so I dont think it is down to wear of the key as I have never used this one since having the car for a few years.
Any ideas on how to fix this woud be greatly appreciated!
Many thanks! Read more
its usually seized up locks, wd if you are lucky, but most times i had to take them off the car and strip and clean and refit or replace
The car is vw gti 1999, T reg 2.0litre engine size
I put new engine in my car as previous engine had black soot coming.
With this engine I have change throtle body.
Problem with this car is its rev drops between 12 to 20 and goes to zero.
If i start car and give a gas it goes fine till 12. After twelve and before 20 rev always drop to zero and then rise again. But if i give more gas and rev goes fine after 20.
Same if i drive the car and if my gas pedal goes between 12 and 20 then it drops and cuts out like there is no power in it. I have to give more gas to either keep the rev after 20 to make it driveable.
anyone knows what problem is and how can i fix it. thanks Read more
Both my Volvo S80 and Mercedes W124 have headlamp wipers, but I can't recall seeing a current-production car with these little wiperettes. High-pressure washers, certainly - but have wipers been quietly pensioned off?
Possibly the result of much larger, curved headlight assembles? Read more
Had to get a new headlamp washer doovry for the Qashqai last week. It was leaking so badly that when filling the washer bottle the contents simply flowed out again through the headlamp washer.
Why do dealers put stickers on the windscreen of used cars saying that they're diesels, but don't put anything on the screens of petrol cars? Read more
you can put an automatic sticker in a car window but if the price fits the customers pocket they dont see it and will sit in the car,you then point out ,did they want an auto? and sometimes they jump out like they been bit by a scorpion
same with diesel most people, i say most ,just assume that all cars are still petrol till its pointed out to them its not

Trouble is L'escargot didn't reply to your post he replied at the end of the

140 quid well spent - SWMBO loves it as when she needs to go to freezer in garage it's just a button press rather than unlocking two door locks to go in side door - although garage is joined to house there is no internal access door.
