Snow here tonight in North Devon and a colleague has a 55 plate 'S' type diesel Auto' Traction useless in these conditions. Now I have guessed (and a small wager) that the gearbox has some sort of tiptronic/manual function up the left hand side of the gate thereby allowing him to select a higher ratio from rest and giving more traction and/or being able to change up ealrier having the same effect.

Will I be the winner??

Best regards.................Martin Read more

>>The S-type is a pig in slippery conditions, be best to leave it and take a bus.

Bang goes my wager then. I always wondered what the 'S' stood for!

I always wondered what the 'S' stood for!

Sport....holds the gears a bit more and changes down a bit earlier e.g. half throttle without 'sport' might not have a change down, with 'sport' and it would.

Spot my exclamation mark WP, to the take the Bus reply???.Wonder what ?S? stood for!!!

Best get a Jimny. It got the ?S? type man home up very rural lanes, 8 inches of snow + my Seventeen and a bit stones and five bags of coal, Bird peanuts and seed and two sacks of dog food, shovel, can of petrol, a few tools too. Blooming carp these 4x4?s

Best regards as ever..M

My car has a serious hesitation when pulling off after cold start in winter. If I disengage the clutch to keep the engine running, then the engine stumbles then recovers after a few seconds. It only happens in the first few minutes after starting, and once moving it pulls well in all gears. In summer the problem doesn't occur. I suspect a temperature sensor or oxygen sensor fault. The car is regularly serviced. Can anyone help? Read more

I really like the current model, and had great fun driving one on a tour round Germany a couple of years back. The weather was so good we had the roof down literally all the time we were driving - even at 140mph on the autobahn. Great fun and far better than the heavy old R170 that preceeded it.

Here in south Manchester, all our local buses have been cancelled due to the snow. Perhaps this is understandable, but it does make the point that one cannot rely on public transport (PT).

It is precisely under these difficult conditions that PT should be fully available. How on earth does the government hope to persuade us out of our cars and onto PT when PT is unreliable?

Yes, I know that conditions are severe (for the UK), but so what? Are buses only fair-weather friends?

Quite so, Pat. Like I said earlier I am so glad that I haven't even had to drive my car in this weather let alone a bus.

Here's a video shot on Hardman Street in Liverpool - not quite as spectacular as notathletic's video but a good illustration of my first post.

I'd advise viewing this video with the sound down. Whoever posted it has made a dubious choice of background music...

In my area I get a lot of interference from what I guess is a pirate broadcast. At home I have just got a digital radio (not yet unpacked) but in the car (02 Focus with standard radio) I can,t see a way of avoiding the rap interludes that irritate me so much. There is never any conversation just constant rap. This has lasted for months now. Any ideas? Read more

In Clacton-on-sea (home of the clapped out vectra/3 series). Now that I think of it, it is probably only within a mile and a half of my house. Portable radio gets taken over completely. Car even when stationery seems to be intermittent. Gardeners Question Time with bursts of yo mommas a ho wicked wicked yo white boy etc etc.Got a friend at Fords will ask if radio can be upgraded. Daughters just about to walk off with this lap top so I will report it in the near future. Thanks.

I recently travelled to Eire on business and hired a small car. I collected this at Cork Airport and returned it to Dublin Airport the same day.

I always use Auto Europe (on-line) to make these reservations and I can thoroughly recommend them as being first class to deal with. Indeed if you do have to call them, the number is 0800 and is always answered very quickly by a real person.

Auto Europe have always arranged my car via Murrays/Sixt when I've been in Eire, however, on this occasion, it was Budget and with them I was charged a fuelling fee which would be refunded if I returned the car full of fuel, (as collected).

Now I normally make all my "foreign" currency transactions in the local currency with a credit card that does not charge an exchange commission, but I forgot to check this when I collected the car and ended-up paying the Euro deposit in UK Sterling. When I returned the car (the SAME DAY) the deposit was refunded, but the exchange rate was slightly different (worse) and as a result I ended-up paying 35p for NOTHING.

Now I'm not going to loose any sleep over this, as it was my fault that I did not have the presence of mind to check the CC machine when I entered my PIN upon collection, (however I'm slightly narked as otherwise I would not have posted this here). But if you think about how many times this probably happens world-wide on a daily basis, someone is onto a good thing!

I've been caught by the same company at the same airport. They carefully folded the receipt so I didn't notice I'd agreed to be charge in £UK and converted to Euros AT THEIR RATE. My card would happily accept Euro currency transactions and convert it to £UK at a rate far more beneficial to me.

They only reluctantly agreed to come and inspect the car with me to agree the considerable number of small dents and scratches it had.................

Guess who I won't touch with a bargepole now?

Through this snow period, the majority of road closures on the M8 / M74 have been as a result of jack knifing lorries.

Now I understand the principle ie. cab goes one way and wagon the other but just wondering from our lorry driver contributors what advances in safety there are on modern rigs compared to older types to prevent this? Do trailers have ABS ?

My brother was heading down to Carlisle today in his car on M74 and at one point he felt his car glide across the carriageway without him touching steering, brakes or anything .
When he looked in his mirror he saw 2 HGVs bearing down on him and that was his cue to get off at next slip road and turn back home!

Its scary enough in a car knowing there is black ice underneath, I'd hate to think how it feels in an HGV when you see your trailer changing angle in your mirrors.... Read more
