My car battery went flat and all the sudden the mileage meter shows 651,351 miles which suppose to be showing 106,000 miles( i have a record proving this mileage 3 month back). Its an A6 Audi 1.8T car. The battery worked fine after been recharged but now the mileage have increased. Any advice would be great. Read more

I agree with DD but would consider leaving battery disconnected overnight!. Make sure keys are well away from the car before process.

From memory -it's too cold to go and check the one in SWMBO's zafira - switch the RDS off and hold the left or right arrow down for a couple of seconds.

Me too -- sometimes if I leave it out at night, moving off smoothly in 1st can be near impossible, with terrible jerking and juddering and no power. Seems not to happen if the car is warmed up or garaged. Clutch was replaced (plus front suspension) without question under warranty in Year 3 but it's still temperamental.

I have no problem with a stiff or sticking clutch cable AFAIK though the throttle has always felt to me very spongy and soggy.

And I've now got the noisy grindy whirring headlamp adjuster problem on the offside, are these a totally sealed unit or can they be stripped down and played around with? I tend to jerk the control around until it stops. I suspect some sticking or corroding mechanism somewhere that must be accessible somehow.

BTW the car came from my dealer ex. Honda Slough, had 7k miles after 3 years so I bought it 4 years ago. Bit disappointing to have some ongoing problems really.

Thanks for any help! Read more

It's a hydraulic clutch on these, not cable. So if you have concerns with the release mechanism it's either the master cylinder, slave or both.

But tbh the temperature sensitive nature sounds like an engine problem, could be all manner of things from Idle control valves to O2 sensors or the Evap system/valve.

Headlight adjusters are the same on mine, they eventually fail and that stops the whirring... I'm afraid they're sealed units, 03 onwards got new headlamps which had replaceable adjusters I believe.

This generation of Civic has really dented my faith in Honda.

The Princess and Ambassador do ride really nicely, go for a MK2 Princess (twin headlamp) much more reliable than the older ones, plus they have the more modern O Series lump, avoid the 2200, the 2 litre four pot is much better and if you can find a twin carb one - quicker too. The 2200 drinks fuel.

Hi,I don't know if anyone can shed any light on this for me? A friend of mine is fitting a clutch in the above vehicle. He has got the old clutch out and it is inded worn out,the damper springs are starting to break up.Luckily it hasn't damaged the flywheel.

Here is the query, the clutch he took out was 215mm,the clutch he has been sold is 210mm,he phoned to double check with the motor factors and they insist that it is the correct clutch.the new 210mm clutch fits fine,it is just smaller in diameter,we didn't know if it is a superceeded part.Does anyone know if that is true. Thanks in advance Andrew...

I have had the car for two weeks or so and it was purchased from a main dealer as an approved car with a one year warranty for mechanical breakdown but excluding wear and tear. I have noticed that the temperature guage only moves about a quarter up the scale. After a long motorway run followed by some city driving I noticed white smoke from the exhaust. I checked the oil which looked clean and the coolant is unclouded. I noticed that the engine and radiator were warm but not hot. I think that the thermostat has stuck. The car has done 40k and the engine is a vtec which performs very well. Admittedly the weather is cold but has anyone got any other ideas as to what could be causing the grey/white steam. I know that it could be worn valve guides or head gasket but wouldn't be a good idea to get Honda to replace the thermostat? The engine block should get fairly hot even in this weather surely? Also, how can I test whether the air conditioning is working properly this weather?. Apart from some surface corrosion on the front subframe which should be treated I am pleased with the car.

Many thanks and a happy new year to you all.

Thank you for your replies. Pantherag, the Haynes manual says that the temp guages on these cars tend to under read. The car isn't producing white steam now. I think it must have been the cold weather and the engine had cooled down quite quickly. The only trouble is that the top hose has a burning smell after a run. The car is going into the main dealer on monday and I have asked them to check this out.

My car doesn't have heated side mirrors. I think it is very essential in this weather. I cleaned my side mirrors before start of journey. Then I discovered thin layer of ice again formed over them while I'm on motorway! Changing lanes was frightening experience!

I also wish I had heated front windscreen. My rear window clears faster than front one.... grrrr..... Read more

I thought the A4 came with heated washer jets or is that an option.

Which is better for winter/snow driving?

Never drove an auto in snow myself - so no first hand expeirence! Read more

Lygonos

I think the consistent theme through all of these snow-driving threads is the type of tyres.

Winter/Mud-snow construction tyres are inherently better by design, but lower profiles, stiffer sidewalls, and wider tread sections all seem to count against getting/maintaining traction on snow.

Hi

Can someone tell me how to fix an issue I have with my Saab.

Basically the internal heater/blower will not switch off and as a result it killed my battery. I had to jumpstart my car would start but the blower kicked in and would not stop, so I removed the blower fuse and now Ihave no heating.

Can anyone help me please.

I was parked up at Michael Wood services today when an Aston martin Rapide (the 4 door Aston) parked opposite me. Then another. Then another. And another. FOUR of them!!!!

I spoke to one of the drivers and he was from AM and these were cars that will be used by the press. The AM guys put a few miles on them before turning them over to the press. The guys job sounded fantastic though, he had been in Sweeden just before Christmas doing some ice driving in an Aston and next week he was testing the £1m supercar that AM are launching.

Have to admit, if you need a four door for the kids, it looks amazing. Much better than the Porsche Panamera that it is going head to head with. Then they started the engines.... What a noise.

Well I can dream I suppose. At least I've got the pictures on my phone... Read more
