Hi,
I slid on black ice yesterday and crashed into an oncoming car, as I crossed on to his side of the road the accident is considered to be my fault, so be it. The question I have is that i would like to know if my car is likely to be written off.
From looking at the car with a very untrained eye, i would say it needs a new passenger door, it will not open, is caved in and is crushing the dash board, a new wing, and the bumper is damaged but possibly repairable. Also the windscreen has shattered. It is a 2002 Astra Estate, with 73k miles on the clock. I should imagine the market value to be around £1.5k give or take. I live in the middle of nowhere with 3 kids and need a car :-(

The car is vw gti 1999, T reg 2.0litre engine size
I put new engine in my car as previous engine had black soot coming.
With this engine I have change throtle body.
Problem with this car is its rev drops between 12 to 20 and goes to zero.
If i start car and give a gas it goes fine till 12. After twelve and before 20 rev always drop to zero and then rise again. But if i give more gas and rev goes fine after 20.
Same if i drive the car and if my gas pedal goes between 12 and 20 then it drops and cuts out like there is no power in it. I have to give more gas to either keep the rev after 20 to make it driveable.
anyone knows what problem is and how can i fix it. thanks

As I remember the 25% vat rate applied to all electrical appliances except kettles and ovens also it applied to petrol but not diesel.
I was gricing a library book the other day about Manchester's buses and trams.
It got me thinking about something you used to see regularly on the motorways and roads of this country.........Bus chassis being delivered to have bodywork made.
Often with the driver in a crash helmet and protected by a rough wooden ' dashboard ' and a screen. They used to go in convoys of 2 or 3 up and down the motorways.
Most impressive were the modern type of bus with the engine at the rear but I also remember ' half cab ' Leylands and Bristols.
Do they still do it, or is everything moved by transporter ?...I imagine H & S might have stopped the activity.

eleventh photo down is the Ulsterbus Bristol that was in Bristol Industrial Museum pre refurb.
Have seen an Astra VXR 55 plate it has 80K miles on which is a bit high, but makes me think its motorway miles and not being ragged around the street.
so 4 and a half years old average miles is 18K a year.
it is one previous owner and FVSH.
the wife is after one, she does around 6 -7K miles p.a.

Scotland ain't a foreign country - may be worth jumping onto a train and driving back !
I hope this doesn't sound too simple for the BRs brains.
In the recent icy weather my wife's Polo has repeatedly suffered from having both of the front doors freeze shut. At first I thought it was simply the doors sticking to the rubbers, so after she had climbed in through one of the rear doors and returned from work I sprayed some silicon on the seals and waited to see if it fixed the problem. Unfortunately today it happened again, this time I was at home so I thought it would just need a bit more muscle to prise the door free, but even though the central-locking worked with the key (the barrel turned and the blippers moved up) it was stuck fast, it feels as though it's the actual lock internals that are 'frozen' (once the Sun has been on the car they open OK).
I'm hoping that it will just need me to spray the lock mechanism with something like WD40 to disperse the water which I guess is freezing inside the door.
Would the freezing conditions cause the door to stick by any other method? Read more
But things have moved on.
To avoid sticky residue try Drylube. No need to rub it off.
as in "Tableau Dry Lube Spray Silicone Lubricant" NOT the stuff for bikes !
( IMO it is also the stuff for curtain track )
It is only about £3 a can.
Just had a look under the kitchen sink, we're fresh out, so that means I'll have to drive out and buy some, so say a gallon of fuel and an hour of my life wasted plus the £3 for the can that I really have'nt got a home for so I'll buy a shelf while I'm out, sorted
Now she wants me to put the shelf up and I've got no wall plugs, where did I put those car keys...................................
;o)
Now this, is a spectacular piece of driving.

you would be suprised, at that speed, distance and height the slightest error would be catostrophic. Its superbly planned as well.
hi room, with it being a new year / decade i was thinking of giving the tool box a make over, nothing major (200-300 quid) some sugestions please... a decent socket set i think but im ok for large sizes i really need a good metric set up to about 13mm and a decent wrench....a code reader probably ? any pointers from the experts would be welcome.
ive enrolled for a mechanics course at the leicester college nothing serious but a general starter course, at the end of the day anything that helps cut down on running costs and servicing/repairs has to be a step in the right direction.......cheers zoo Read more
As other have implied the Halfords Professional range is as good as anything at any price, Falcon, Snap On etc. I've bought nothing but Halfords Professional since they were released - I've never had a single problem, not one worn or broken socket despite lots of abuse over a decade. They've got a half price sale on socket sets at the moment. The torque wrenches are great too.
Just watching Jools Holland's Hootenanny from last night and really disappointed with it compared to previous years.
Maybe just not a Boy George or Dizzy Rascal fan , and the Al Murray thing wore thin last year.
Anyone else watch it? Thoughts? Read more
Sadly due to lifestyle changes the dogs may have to go - one might be difficult to re-home as he is a bad tempered brute with everyone apart from me !
thanks for that i actually live on the bucks/oxon border, but to be fair i used an unclassified single track road which would never be gritted anyhow, is was all down to my poor judgement, there was no ice on the roads in my village, it was 1pm and sunny so i chose to use the back route to save time, the road was clear up until this patch and just unlucky that another car was coming the other way at that moment. hey ho you live and learn... to top it all the guy called me to tell me he has been to the hospital and has whiplash so i am now waiting to see if he is going to sue me also :-( but there was nothing i could do to avoid it, i swerved to avoid a head on that was all i could do.
