Finally got up and over garage door - dxp55
having sold up and bought a small bungalow it came with rather a large garage with 8x6 U&O garage door - all my other garages had wooden side openers and my ambition in life was to have an electric opening door -- Well I have now - just fitted a door opener and it's best thing since sliced bread - it's 24vDC as opposed to older 240v one's which means you can program the speed it close's - so start and stop can be made soft open/close and also it will stop if obstructed.
Who else has a door opener and do you think it's great or just part of your garage.

Yup, they're great. You come up the drive in the rain and... just press a button. Brilliant!

I used to work in an office on the banks of the river Clyde in central Glasgow before that area got airs and graces. We had a garage under the building which attracted all manner of undesirable visitors. Think of a category and we got most variants at one time or another. Having become fed up with cars being nicked, broken into or just vandalised we decided to buy a heavy duty electric roller shutter with remote controls. Brilliant thing until it broke one day with three cars stuck in the garage !

My garage has an 8 foot wide door with a 15 year-old Henderson Screwdrive mains electric opener. It's handy, but it's a bit high maintenance. The screw has to be lubricated every few weeks. I've had to replace both limit switches and the control unit in the garage. Fortunately I found a parts supplier. I wouldn't have one from choice ~ too much to go wrong. I like the 8 foot wide door though. I can drive through it much easier than a 7 foot wide door.

We get occasional power cuts lasting hours. I'll stick to manual thanks.

Thought about using laptops instead? Built-in UPS.

"Thought about using laptops instead? Built-in UPS. "

I run 3 monitors and overclock to 3.5 MHZ so a laptop would not be feasible. Or rather not economically feasible..-And a working laptop with UPS is useless if nothing else works.. One UPS is quite large...

In the event of a power cut I just pull a cable and the door is disconnected from the opener. It can then be opened and closed manually. Unfortunately it can't be locked in this mode other than by reconnecting it to the opener.

Trouble is: 3 garage doors gets expensive..

Try this www.easygates.co.uk/lm800a.asp - just make sure your door runs free and it set up right - one tip is try to reinforce the door where arm fix's - liable to bend door slightly if it's at all weak or thin metal. My door is the retractable type

I got a Clopay insulated sectional door from B&Q a few years ago - they're the bog-standard garage door in the US, but they don't seem to be sold here any more. It's great compared to U&O as you can park right up to it (same as a roller door).

The one on show didn't have a lock or handle so I thought to keep it looking clean I'd fit an electric opener. I got a Chamberlain opener from Screwfix but on opening the door pack at home, the holes for the lock and handle where pre-cut. Doh!

Anyway, with the door tension set the door opens and closes with the lightest of touches. The electric opener has an easy life.

The economy model seems to work reasonably well: www.youtube.com/watch?v=1C-Bxifv2Pk

Our house came with electric U&O doors; unfortunately the builders threw away the locking mechanism so if I get a motor problem I'll have be creative to find a way to secure them.

I have a remote control roller shutter - great after years of manual up and over.

It has a manual winding handle and because it is fitted to an enclosed rear yard, I can access the back of the door to fit the handle from inside or outside the house.

So I don't think I can be seriously caught out by a power cut - unless I've missed some combination of my whereabouts, the car's whereabouts and the position of the door.

The ups I use in my shack came from a roller shutter fitter. Most have them fitted for that obvious reason.

Me, I'll stick with my wooden opening doors. They double as a tool holder with multiple nails and don't get in the way of storing things in the roof.

We've had electric U&O garage doors for years, absolutely brilliant and wouldn't be without them!

We had a burglary attempt once at our old house where we had the Henderson electric opener that operated with a screw style system rather than a chain. They pulled so hard on the door that the whole door bent outwards from the bottom buckling the front panel and the support braces behind. The door opener held fast and kept the door shut tight, the standard fit locking system that preceded the Henderson opener could be simply pulled open without damage it was so weak.

Mind you we still needed a new door but at least the motorbike survived the incident unscathed!

Thanks dxp!

Our door is what is refered to as sectional on that website, I might look into it, it's quite cost effective it seems.

140 quid well spent - SWMBO loves it as when she needs to go to freezer in garage it's just a button press rather than unlocking two door locks to go in side door - although garage is joined to house there is no internal access door.
