HI all,just thought that id update you all as to my buying or replacement plan for my ageing Octavia. I previously posted that i was considering an del miles Astra Est,fancied the 1.3 fiat chain cam. After considering all the advice i basically sat back & considered what to do next?????,let the old die hard run for another 3 months,& yes shes's still going sweet as.Bottom line was the Octavia due a test next month & she just wont pass as too many things to do that cost cash..
So went to UK last week with 10k to spend,viewed several auction houses,& was amazed.
Ended up bringing back a Skoda Superb,54 plate with 84k on,2.5 ELEGANCE & a 04 Primera estate,39000 on,2.2dci SE. Total cost inc bringing back to Isle of Man,8.2k
Both vehicles now through the statutory test,am intending using Superb as main vehicle,Primera as my personal car & spare taxi.Would welcome any info on what to look out for especially on the Primera,only 3 out of 150 taxis here are Primeras,none of the owners report major problems,but bought the Primera on impulse,due to price.

I have a Superb 4 cyl manual diesel. It's hard to fault for its cost and gives an almost unbeatable quotient of room/comfort, performance and economy. It handles like a barge though.
The 130PS AWX diesel engine is easily the best of the bunch.
Watch out for rain water ingress through the pollen filter housing due to a deteriorated seal and blocked plenum drains. Google for details and fixes. This problem can cause very expensive damage.
Take the top pinch bolts out of the front suspension and grease them before they rust solidly in. The car will need new suspension arms within its lifetime and rusted bolts here will double the labour cost. When you see the detailing you will appreciate why these things rust solidly in. The same applies to the track rod ends, but don't disturb the vertical position of the ball joints when you grease the pinch bolts, otherwise the raised toe will be incorrect.
Hope you got folding rear seats.

You wont go far wrong with the nissan good engines and box just look after it with regular oil changes.
They have some around here as taxis on over 150k and still run.

You're lucky you can plate cars that old, in Bristol they have to be under 3yrs for private hire, and in Newport s Wales there is uproar among drivers as all new private hire cars have to be brand new, starting soon.

And rightly so, although I think I read somewhere that a judicial review had ruled against the Council and in favour of the taxi community. Appears to have been driven by a pathetic mix of Health and Safety paranoia and ego/image problems in the Council ahead of the Ryder Cup event.

Actually, i've just had a google regarding the Newport thing, and i'm not so against that now. I understood it was going to be all private hire and taxis had to be brand new to get plated but the actual proposals from Newport council were "From October, private hire vehicles being licensed for the first time will have to be no older than three years and three months while Hackney carriages can be no older than five years.
From August 2010, no purpose-built wheelchair accessible Hackney carriages older than 12 years and no private hire vehicles older than eight years will be re-licensed."
The start age sounds fine to me, but the "end age" seems a bit low. At the moment its currently TWENTY years, which seems rather old and as such I can understand why the council want to do something.

Round here - Elmbridge in Surrey - it's seven years and then the car has to have an "enhanced MOT" twice a year up to a maximum age of ten years.

Cheers for all the advice,very interesting reading on age restrictions elsewhere,were very lucky here as no restrictions at present,although talk of a 10 year age limit coming in soon which I totally aggree with.

In Bedford (where I used to work driving a PHV) they introduced age restrictions a few years back - no older than 6 years at first plating and no relicensing of vehicles older than 9 years. Seemed sensible, as recently as 2002 there were plated B- and C-reg Mercs, a D-reg Cavalier and a plethora of E-reg Carina IIs still wobbling down the High Street on a Friday night.
ISTR the D-reg Cav was like the proverbial grandfather's axe though, where almost every component (bodyshell included) had been replaced at least once.

Chesterfield borough council i think take the award for most unreasonable council.
They have just announced that all replacement wheelchair taxis have to be under 6mths old and it has to be wav .
No warning just right from now on your next vehichle has to be under 6mths old.
So my taxi that has 200k on clock has to do me next three year before they review this.
They have also capped number of hackneys at 110 but the only problem is they already have 178 hackneys.
We also have to take the new dsa driving test within 3 years even though i have done job 20 years.
