I have owned a '56 diesel SE Sport Volvo for 8 months, bought and last serviced by an independent.
Almost from first getting the car there were intermittent problems with it starting. These got progressively worse.
As the warranty was about to run out I booked the car into the local Volvo garage. Initially it had a software download, then a new ignition switch, then the car would not start at all, and was towed to the garage, outside warranty. It had the "sludge" cleaned out of the tank and a new fuel pump. Sadly this has not cured the problem, and the car is still very unreliable when starting.
I am about to book the car into the Volvo dealership again (for the sixth time) but really have little confidence that they can fix it.
Does anyone have any ideas what the problem might be? Could it perhaps be something to do with the key (as many other things have been looked at). The rain and cold weather don't seem to help but there were also problems in the summer. Once started it always runs very well.

That sounds more like a loose connection in the ignition switch or the starter motor than a fuel feed problem.

Hi all,

Basically I am looking for a 2005-2006 high miler 2.0TDCI Titanium focus, found a lovely one at a car place near Barnsley, It had a 106,000 on the clock but apparently had a FSH, I got down there and it all seemed very nice, looked in the service book to see if it had the 100k timing belt change and its last service was at 87k, I then looked back at previous service stamps and it had only been serviced every 20k (there was one at 57k and 37k etc.)

Now I thought they were 12.5K intervals but the sales guy was saying 'No no, I used to work for Ford, 20k intervals etc.') I left it anyway to have a think because I really liked the car and wanted to cool down before making any offers.

I got home and checked with a local Ford main dealer and they said IT IS 12.5k and this guy was lying?

Basically I have a couple of questions for anyone who can help:

1) The service intervals should be 12.5K ?

2) Should I steer clear of a car that has missed each of these intervals by 7.5k not to mention a dealer who has blatantly lied?

Thanks in advance for any help and sorry about the long post!

Am I missing something?

The thread title is itself misleading, the OP was mislead by the seller, not by the dealer.

Hi all,

Hoping people will still reply to this original message!

I have a problem...i have a 53 Punto 1.2 Active and the bonnet release cable has snapped and pulled right through. I need to open the bonnet as due to the cold weather I need to replace the battery. I've tried taking the bottom grill out and getting my hand up & in to release the catch but no go.

Any suggestions or will it be a trip to Fiat and a new bonnet?

Many Thanks

Are they still legal if they are are they any good.Tonight on my way home was exciting lots of bmw,s stuck on small uphill gradients sliding all over the place getting nowhere most of the front wheel drive cars not doing too bad .But i never saw any cars with snow chains on the tyres I used to see them years ago but not anymore .During this patch of global warming when we are covered in snow and ice is it worth getting some chains for the car
what do you all think

My father, a GP in Yorkshire, used them during the odd severe winter e.g.1963. So did lots of other drivers who had to get around.

Why don't country dwellers carry them in the boot? I remember leaning out of a hotel window in Kitzbuhel watching a Merc stall halfway up a snowy hill. Got snowchains from boot and laid them behind rear wheels, eased back 2ft onto them, did them up, off again up hill in less than 10mins.

Why aren't lorries forced to carry them so they don't block our main roads? It's pretty foolish to send an artic with one driving axle and virtually slick tyres out onto snowy roads.

I've only ever changed a flat tyre once myself and it took me ages (and that was outside my own house on a quiet road). Have never experienced this on a motoraway, or any trip, and wondered what people would recommend. I can imagine it's a terrifyig experience jacking up a car next to three lanes of passing traffic. Would you call your breakdown service or try it yourself? Read more

You loosen the nuts slightly when all four wheels are firmly on the ground. THEN
you jack it up. Undo the nuts - this should be (pretty much) a fingers-only
job; change wheel retighten nuts (pretty much fingers-only) then lower car. THEN you tighten the
wheels.

Spot on.
a) You have already checked regularly that the wheels aren't corroded to the hubs
b) Leave the brace hanging on a wheel nut while you lower the jack, so that you don't forget to tighten the nuts in your haste to get going again.

None of the Zafira-B's or Astra-H's have temperature gauges. Pleased to say that Vx have fitted temperature gauges to the new Astra-I range.

Gauge is missing to stop us owners fretting about whether 80 degrees or 90 degrees on the guage is too cold!!

Hi, Just to say i am shocked that so many people are having the same problem with Vauxhall Vectra suddenly not starting after being parked. Yes the obvious battery and weather conditions are the obvious but from experience it is more serious.

I have an 06 SRI 2.2, and within the first weeks of purchasing it would not start,. Husband being a mechanic knew that it was not battery and not due to cold weather, this was serious the engine would only make a whirring noise like a fan. Luckily under warranty as vauxhall charged £300 just to link it to the computer. It was the Cam Chain and hundreds more onto the bill for timing chain - chain tensioners - gasket - cylinder block gasket - filter element - AND this was only at 20,000 miles (Not Good)...

Thinking about getting one of these. In the future I am going to be doing more work, callouts and such to people's homes. So will probably be parking in areas I don't know very well - last thing I want is to get my car stolen!

Not sure how much security it would add. My car has an immobiliser and the steering wheel locks itself when key is not in. Read more

Your car comes with an immobiliser, so a Disklock is not required from that point of view.

But it is a big visual deterrant, and it passed Thatchams Criteria.

The car has been a non starter four times this past week and towed twice in one week to a garage with no fault being diagnosed (no fault codes are displayed). Please forgive my ignorance of the technicalities of cars being of the female species..... The car turns over however does not start. Has been problematic since the colder weather and is the same recurring problem last year whcih cost me over £400 in fault finding but no fault ascertained. More recently I have had glow plugs tested to be informed all OK, checks for air in the fuel system and the battery replaced. The breakdown guys believe it to be the low pressure pump in the fuel tank however garage says otherwise. How is it the breakdown mechanics can spray ether into the air intake pipe and it fires up? It gets towed to a garage and they then have no trouble starting the car. The car returns home for the problem to reoccur within a couple of days. Only yesterday having got it back did I experience the loss of power when driving home and despite the accelerator being depressed to the floor there was very little power even when changing up through the gears. So surprise surprise it was a non starter this morning. This car has put a dent of £2.5 K in my bank balance since owning it from Aug 2007 and I am now thinking it is time to cut my losses however am unable to trade it in due to existing problem. Any advice regarding likely fault would be greatly appreciated. Read more

Hi Paul, problem still not resolved. I have had no car for 3 weeks now and I am getting desperate as I need the car for work. I have been informed it is not the camshaft sensor or the starter motor as previous threads have suggested. There is not fault code readings so the mechanic suspects it is something of minor cost (having spent a fortune on fault finding and replacing or checking parts that were fine!). I have had all my injectors removed and tested and apparently one was faulty and replaced to the cost of £250.00 incl of labour. I see someone has kindly posted and suggested to check the diesel filter first so I have now passed this information on to my mechanic. I will keep you updated with any progress.

Is it worth buying a spare set of steel wheels and winter tyres to slap on when the weather gets a bit icy or snowy?

What would I have to pay? My tyre size is 225/55 R16 93W. Read more

Agreed, had Vred Wintracs on the Hilux, not sure just how bad or steep it would have to be to stop it, went everywhere i asked of it in RWD only without the slightest slip.
