I have managed to scratch 3 of the elements on my HRW and it is very noticeable now when there is frost on the outside. I'm sure I once heard of some kind of 'paint on' product that effectively reconnects the broken tracks, but does anyone know what it is called or have any experience of it? Read more

Another thought. Is this an estate car?
A common fault is the glass break wire for the rear windows can fail and keep setting the alarm off. Most people this has happened to over on Vectra-c.com just pull the relevant fuse in the boot fuse box to disable the glass break sensor or short the wires together if the car is no longer under warranty.
Hi, my golf 4 TDI has a problem ...... started it the other day and it ran rough, gunned the throttle and it picked up so drove it for about 10 miles. had some intermitent misfire then suddenly died and could not restart. towed it back in gear to see if it would fire nothing ..... had to leave it!! tried today and it fired once but no joy looked at fuel comming out of fuel filter and it seems to be drawing fuel but still no ignition any ideas!! I have a problem with blocked screenwashers on my BMW. The dealer tells me that the fluid had turned to jelly and that this is a problem with Halfords fluid. They say that it will not be covered by warranty and since the reservoir is concealed in the wheel-arch it will be quite a job to clear it. Has anyone else had this problem? Read more
It is actually a common problem with the E90.
All BMW say is "Use our additive"
Like the idea of getting written confirmation of the cause and persuing Halfords for the damages! I wonder if anything would be forthcoming from the dealer????
My peugeot 306 L hdi 2.0L estate,(1999), just cut out on me after it had been running o.k.
The breakdown engineer could not start it, so towed me home.
I took it to a peugeot dealer the diagnostics could not be accessed, they told me a new wiring loom + ecu MIGHT be required (cost £2400.00)
When the engine cut out there was no engine mil light on the dash, yet the engine would turn over but would not start.
Battery went flat, recharged, now engine mil light on dash, but still will not start.
I still have all dash lights, central locking, etc working.
I do not want to throw the car away, for what I think is an electrical problem, so I am now tracing the wiring and checking for earth faults.
Could the engine immobilser cause this problem?
I am also unsure if the ecu is getting a signal from the transponder? is there an easy way to check?
Any assistance would be much appreciated as the car was a very good runner up till this incident, and has only done 60,000 miles with full service history.

Cheers i haven't had chance to get on the vehicle yet i will try this and will let you know.
Thanks for the reply
I paid more than a fiver for two 3 volt batteries for the remote entry fob for my car. They had the right code number on them but were a different make from the old ones, and were matt finish rather than shiny.
They don't work. Today my SiL gave me a 3v battery of the same size with a different code number on it, and of yet another make, but shiny. The fob is now rejuvenated and works better than it ever has.

Surely not, Old N. - "hugely" is the new "very" IMO
Hi,
Headlight bulb went, gone to replace in a rush cos it was going dark and raining. I replaced light bulb, turned on to check new one worked and it did so was quite happy. I went to put it back within the head light casing (whilst illuminated) and it made a funny noise and I assume I have now blown the new bulb as its stopped working I assume I can just get a new bulb and replace, I wont have done any greater damage will I? Have I just made it short or something? Thanks Read more
probably new bulb or at worse blwon fuse.
that was a silly thing to do, those bulbs run at very hot surface temperatures, enough to whip the skin from your hand.
I've bought a 2000 Suzuki Jimny with less than 40,000 miles on the clock. The service book says the cambelt should be changed at 60,000 miles. I have very little mechanical knowledge but constantly read that if the cambelt breaks - that's very, very bad.
I can't see any record of it having being changed in the past and wonder is the wear of the cambelt solely related to mileage? That is, is the age of the belt also a factor? Should I consider having it changed soon or am I being over cautious?
Is there a way of telling if a cambelt needs changing other than the mileage indicator?
Thank you. Read more
Thanks all - I think I'll get it changed as soon as possible.
I was reading up on the Ford 'Essex V4' engine from ford and this got me thinking.
What is the advantage of a V4 configuration (packaging smaller space) ?
Wouldn't a V4 need balancing shafts ?
Why not just use the 'Essex V6' instead ?

The 1.8 was a 6 cylinder version of the 1.2.
The 2.0,2.3 and 2.8 were all made at the same time and were made by different combinations of stroke/bore.
The 2.4 and 2.9 were uprated versions of the 2.3 and 2.8.
