I have a big problem with my megane. Engine keeps cutting out usually when driving in rain or through water that can get to the engine. The revs are falling down and then the car stops after a while, it often happens while trying to change gear. The when I am trying to start it up, the engine turns but it is not starting. The AA people have not helped, other than towing to garage. There I was told it is crank sensor, so they have changed it and reset the computer, and following day car started. Paid £150 for that and the next time it was raining, same thing again, drove through some water and engine died. The car mechaninc can not find the fault, and I have no idea what more to do!! please help Read more

hi there jagoda

I'm looking at changing my car next March and torn between the Honda Accord 2.2i Ex and Lexus IS 220D SE_L.

The Lexus is about £2,000 more than the Honda, but it will probably be the last car I will buy, and aim to keep it until it drops - at least that is my present intention.

I have been happy with my present Honda, that I bought new in 2004, but was wondering if the Lexus may be a better proposition.

Any comments? Read more

Next time I will consider (I hope) an Audi A5 Sportback ;-)

Me too! Seems to tick all the boxes for me, but "What Car" seem to have a real downer on it.

All I can say to the OP is that a work colleague has an Accord with the 2 litre petrol engine and loves it. Runs like clockwork, deceptively spacious and running costs are reasonable.

Do any members on the forum have any experience with outfits such as Dent Doctors who advertise to repair vehicle dents, dings and scrapes at your house without removing panels?

I have a ding caused by a car door edge in a car park in the nearside rear door which I would like to have repaired.

If the collective wisdom dictates that they are not worth it then a traditional body shop may be used but seems not quite enough of a job to get it booked in etc, plus it's not an insurance job. I don't fancy the idea of getting a Halfords employee to try it.

I've used 'Chips Away' once or twice and found the guy excellent. The first time was when I carelessly reversed into a roadworks barrier on a dark street. The dent was bigger than he usually dealt with and he was doubtful about doing a good job, but it turned out to be excellent.

The last time was cosmetic when I was preparing my car for part-ex. Again, a superb job. The next night I drove past a building site and a yob threw a stone at the car. It sounded like a bomb dropping as it hit the driver's door. I went along with the trade and the dealer knocked £250.00 of the trade price to cover the repair (and I bet that's what they did !)....

Hello everyone hope you can help,

I bought my mk6 fiesta in the summer and have now just found out (as I'm sure many people do at this time of year) that my heated front windscreen doesn't work correctly. from what i understand the passenger and driver side are split. it manages to de-mist quite a large chunk (but not all) on the passenger side but only a couple of thin lines on the drivers side. does anyone know of any troubleshooting steps i could take before i hand it over to Ford for them to charge me through the you know what. i've seen other posts where people say about checking the relay, checking the earth, checking the connections but from what i understand their HFS wasn't working at all.

(fingers crossed the element isn't broken, can't tell though cos the wires are so thin)

many thanks Read more

Don't take it anywhere near a Ford Main Dealer, they will charge you a fortune. What's more, they won't do the job but will farm it out to a windscreen specialist. I know this because my Mondeo has to have a new heated screen fitted under warranty. Took it into my local FMD, they got Autoglass to do it. No complaints at all, first class work and they used an original screen (Ford don't make them, by the way!)

Hi

I have just taken my Vauxhall astra into the dealer today after hearing weird noises from my clutch pedal, I have 5 months left on my 3 year warranty and have 41000 miles on the clock.

He tells me its a clutch thrust bearing, not the clutch plate.

After ringing up vauxhall hq they say it is only under warranty for 18,500miles

Is this true, or am I trying to be swindled out of my warrantied repair,

I have been told that this part itself (by others) is a life part and shouldnt go

I do mainly motorway miles

Please can you advise

Thanks Read more

You have no chance of getting this under warranty.
There have been problems with these clutches and we've changed a few. Its not a particularly easy job (book time is about 5 hours, but it usually takes us longer). The slave cylinder is in with the release bearing, so get them to change that too and bleed the system out, then check and adjust the gear change linkage. Make sure it is a branded clutch that goes in.
Depending on where you are in the country you are probably looking at £400-500 for this job using proper parts.

Do you mean typos? Yes, of course, you are right and to err is human.

However, if the same spelling has been used by a contributor in scores of previous posts, is it then safe to assume that the author really does not know the correct spelling? For example, there are some contributors (all self proclaimed IT experts) who consistently make the same spelling mistakes (e.g. "loose" instead of "lose"). Perhaps their IT training tells them that paying attention to detail does not matter; as Bill Gates et.al. have proved, there is money to be made in cleaning up the mess after selling products inherently full of "bugs".

For example, a search the forum for words "independant" or "loose" or "dealer principle" or "definate" should reveal how often these "typos" occur. I suppose the excuse that "grammar and spelling does not matter as long as your audience get the meaning" has now been accepted as a norm by a population that has been through the modern "comprehensive" education system.

Hi there. I've recently bought a Citroen Xsara and the central locking isn't working. When I put the key in the drivers door lock it only unlocks the drivers door. The passenger door won't unlock using the key. I don't have a remote control CL key. The hazard lights flash when locking and unlocking the door. I'm not too bothered about having central locking but the main problem is that the system has failed with the tailgate in the unlocked position so the tailgate is permanently unlocked. I would appreciate any advice on this matter. Many thanks in advance. Read more

Interesting post, I have exactly that! - water coming in through the aerial.

I only found it as I have just bought the car and the radio had no reception, pulled out the radio - stuck a couple of wires in the aerial socket and Radio 1 straight away....

It looks like I need to replace the resistor pack, since the fan and therefore heater does not work. A while ago positions 3 & 4 worked - but now, nothing!

I've heard access is behind the glove box or near the base of the windscreen wipers, but not being familiar with the terms used & match what I see, against diagrams, I've not been able to locate it.

I couldn't see a pollen filter near the wipers, although it may be missing.

I have taken some pictures, but it doesn't look like I can include them with the message.

Also, is it advisable to buy a new resistor pack, or is 2nd hand OK ?

Thanks for your time, Eagle eyes Read more

Thanks for the help, guys.

I don't have the car now, and wasn't able to find the resistor pack in the end.

All looks a bit contrived. Hope it was the owner driving it (to cop the prosecution), not some poor employee, it seemed like it although he was in the passenger seat when it was driven away.

The nub of the matter (as far as I'm concerned) is that all road-legal vehicles
have as much right to be driven on the roads as any other.

And anyone who can't cope with other vehicles, (no matter what type), should not be driving.
