I'm looking to replace my current megane 1996 1.6 8v. I used to have a mk1 tdci which was brilliant and another focus would be great - this time a petrol. But I've always wanted to own a BMW but don't know how it compares to the focus. Both cars are about £1300 and 100k miles.
The BMW would be more costly to run and maintain but I only plan to keep it for about a year. What I'm more interested in is which car is the better to drive, around town and for long distance cruising. Reliability is also important. Read more

Need some help please,
My 307 hdi has developed a strange habit of both the rev counter and speedo needles plus the temp and fuel gauge needles returning to start positions whilst driving, then within a few seconds returning back to correct readings.
As soon as this happens the red stop light comes on and of course goes off when the needles return to reading correctly.
No other electrics on the car fail ie lights, wipers, fan, indicators.
So any body else had this ? or andone tell me where to start looking for the fault.
Thanks for reading this and if you can help i would appreciate it.

Turns out that over last week's icy weather Devon used a massive six tonnes of salt on its entire network. Six miserable tonnes. No small wonder 70% of the roads were undrivable. I would have expected sixty tonnes, not six! Read more
Exactly what I thought, but we are talking about a local authority, basic common sense does not apply.
Bother. When I jacked up the rear offside of the car, and took the wheel off, the flipping thing then wouldn't go back on, the PCD of the studs coincided approximately with the centre of the wheel. Had the wheel expanded from the heat of my hands? Had the earth mysteriously moved, or the jack sunk into it? No, it blinking well hadn't. The flipping jacking point had disappeared up inside the bodywork somewhere, and the car was slowly descending. Drat and double drat. The last time I saw such was when the N/S jacking point on an old Morris - a tubular affair with a rubber bung in the end to (try and) keep the muck out of it - actually fell off when a wheel was being changed. I used to own a Lancia Beta coupe and an Alfasud(but not at the same time) I became an expert at rubbing down fibreglass and spraying! Come to think of it,we often see French and Italian cars rubbished for their reliability on this forum. When did you last see one with rust on as opposed to more prestigious marques?
Front windscreen wipers stopped working today. The water still sprays and the rear windscreen wiper is still working.
Rang VW dealer and was quoted £49 to run diagnosis machine before any work is done.
I've tried doing a bit of research and some sites suggest it could be the fuse, others say it could be the motor, but i wouldn't know how to check either.
Please help.

More info...
I checked the fuses and none seem to have blown. Tried opening and closing the bonnet to see if that would work (i'd read somewhere about a bonnet switch failure being linked to wiper failure although i could have got that bit wrong), but that didn't work either.
Whats the catch

I drive a Jag 4.0 XJS doing about 20mpg so this sounds interesting if it works, but pardon my scepticism!

If you already had one on your car you could improve the air flow and the efficiency by removing it. If you do not already have one then you have saved yourself the trouble.

Z4 was in for its annual service at local BMW main dealer.
Its an 04 plate car with only 30k miles and full BMW history.
I tend not to use the car too often in winter if possible, it's not the best in the snow and I'm always scared of it getting damaged.
I have an old Mercedes Vito van that's up to it's purpose of general hack.
When I went to pick up the car, I was told the mechanic had slipped and fell against the front wing causing a dent.
It's pretty visible - not any chance of hiding it.
The car is metallic silver so it won't be a simple case of painting the repair. I'm also concerned a couple of years down the road - the repair is visable.
I have been asked to pay a visit tomorrow to my local VW dealer who have a paintshop that is BMW approved.
I visited a paintshop a while back in relation to a mark in the bonnet. The mark was polished out no problem but at the time was told to get a perfect colour match, they would need to paint the bonnet and both sides of the car!!!!
Basically I'm pretty pfd off tonight and looking for any advice.
Cheers

You need a motor from them of course !
I would take detailed photos of the side to be painted as well.

..and that is 24,000 fewer than anticipated.
IMHO Still a good result. Well done all. Read more
Seems a bit drastic to crush everything. Why not employ a team of specialist breakers to remove anything that can be recycled - body panels, interior trim and so on - which can then be sold to anyone who wants them.
