My son's car door has been badly dented by a van losing control on an icy road. There is no jagged metal but we can't push out the dent. There is no jagged trim or metal posing a hazard to others. However we can't get the window to open. As long as he keeps the window clean and clear is he OK legally to use the car pending repair? Read more

Hi guys and gals.
I need help to point me in the right direction. I have just purchased a 2006 Boxster with 26000 miles on the clock. I have the service history and the MOT. All confirm mileage is accurate. However, on carrying out a HPI check, the results bring up an entry to say that the mileage is 126, 000 miles in September 2009. The source of this information is DVLA. It is wrong and not one of those cases where mileage has been clocked etc etc.
My question is how can I get the DVLA entry removed? Anyone with any previous experience in this?
I will appreciate any guidance.
Thanks

Check it against the National Mileage Register (NMR). This is maintained and updated by HPI (may involve doing an HPI check if not done one already). If this shows the same discrepancy, send to DVLA with covering letter. If this fails, DVLA has a complaints procedure you need to follow. See www.dft.gov.uk/dvla/contactus/if_things_go_wrong.a...x
This has been touched on a few days ago, with regard to were winter tyres required. Having discussed a colleague's trials and tribulations over the few days with his RWD Jaguar = couldn't move on and ice or snow; He has fitted winter tyres at huge expense but reckons they are the answer. I checked the regulations and found the following on the AA site.
"All motorists have the obligation to adapt their vehicles to winter weather conditions. This includes but is not limited to winter tyres and anti-freeze fluid for the washer system. Extreme weather may additionally require snow chains.
The law does not specify which type of tyre is 'appropriate' the general opinion is that any type of tyre except summer tyres is appropriate, including all-year tyres.
Winter tyres must bear the mark M&S or display the snowflake on the side wall.
Motorists, whose car is equipped with summer tyres while there is snow and ice, may not take the car on the road. Motorists in violation face fines of ?20. If they actually obstruct traffic, the fine is ?40."
I am not sure how many people realise the winter tyres are not just a good idea but a legal obligation?

To clarify, this refers to law in Germany only?
Hi - just bought a Mondeo mk3 Titanium X TDCi and I'm a bit confused. It doesn't seem to have the ESP stuff but I thought it would have traction control, but I can't see anything to indicate it has. Does anyone know how to tell. I must admit, I would have expected it to be standard.
Thanks

why would a 2.2 mondeo need tc? hardly going to set the world on fire
Well it produces around 300lb/ft torque, more than many much larger petrol engines. However chassis/suspension design is the key and the Mondeo gets its torque through to the road pretty well.

but 10 mins into the New Year is too early to start accruing brownie points!!
:)
Correct. But isn't it strange how last year's demerits and failings still count? And the year before that, and before that.... ;-)
I wonder if the new Ka is galvanised or not - wouldn't surprise me if Ford cut corners again. I'm pretty sure the Fiat 500 is definitely galvanised. When I had a blue '09 Ka Mk2 as a courtesy car for a few days, I noticed how rubbish the paint job is compared to my '08 Ka Mk1. On the new Ka, they basically don't paint where you don't see.
Here's an example:

Focus IIs were fitted with a kind of plastic sill guard from a year or so after launch and earlier ones have had the retrofitted, not an issue at all on the ST.

Some Seagates had a problem a year or so back - I know cos I had one! - but generally reliability is good across the board. Occasionally a manufacturing defect can hit a whole batch (i.e. many thousands) of drives and, if not noticed, these are installed in systems. I was involved with a Dell recall some years back for corporates who had bought their laptops - we held "clinics" for their users to have their drives swapped - hundreds of them!
btw I may have mentioned, but it is perceived by some that Dell quality is lower since the manufacturing was moved to Eastern Europe...
Hi all
I have a 2003 Peugeot Partner Combi 2.0 HDi. After having the cambelt changed recently the engine has developed a problem. When the engine is hot it will not start. When it is cold (eg left overnight) it starts and runs normally.
It initially looked like a fuel problem. Priming the fuel system helped to start the engine. The dealer has also re-checked the valve timing.
After a lot of testing the dealer believes the fault lies with the ECU (a Siemens model). It is giving strange readings (when the engine is not running) and it appears that it is not allowing the sensor on the camshaft to communicate with the sensor on the crankshaft(both sensors having been replaced).
The problem only started after the cambelt was changed, but all the cambelt work has been re-checked.
Has anyone come across this before?!?
Many thanks
Dan

I have some sympathy when markings are obscured, but re "overhangs", surely it isn't too difficult for people to check that they have parked correctly before they leave the car, or move it a few yards down the road if they can't fit...
We criticise people for rubbish driving, but surely bad parking is just as bad, and its not that difficult... I must admit that if I've not got SWMBO and wheelchair on board I'm quite happy to park further away and walk a few hundred yards rather than try and squeeze into some impossible space...
Its about time that people found out what their legs and feet were primarily designed for... and its not for pushing pedals in a car!! ;-)

Tell the driver not to frequent any multi-storey carparks as paying on leaving
might present difficulties (and anger those behind him - it is the panto season!)
