I glanced at the pop up (above) re a very well equipped BMW at a very signigant price reduction. The second time I looked at it I saw that the offer related to a car built in 2006. At the most optimistic view this car is 2 years and 3 months old, minumum. Where has it been all this time, will it have a 'new' car warranty, and is it a good buy at that price?

If it's the ones I'm thinking about they came from Malaysia. Can't remember the circumstances, but they've certainly been about.

Hi! My first post, this. But have been reading for yonks..!

Here's what I'm after some advice on.

In Oct 2008 I bought a 2005 model Volvo V50 for my wife - cost £9,000 (the car, not my wife). It has done around 4,000 miles in the last five months. A recent "strange smell" has been investigated by our local Volvo main dealer and described as probably the clutch & DMF in urgent need of replacing.

Cost to fix - something in the region of £1,000.

The car came with a three year third-party warranty. But as there is no doubt wear & tear involved in this problem, I don't expect the warranty company to cough up and the Volvo dealer has said pretty much the same thing.

Is it unreasonable of me to think that for the clutch & DMF to be on the verge of failing after five months and 4,000 miles, there must have been a problem with the car when I bought it?

Should I be expecting the dealer I bought the car off (a nearby indie Volvo specialist) to contribute to the repair?

Anyone got any words of wisdom?

Thanks in advance!

I'm curious. What was the solution?

Hello,

I've just replaced the rear drum brakes on the above car. The piston escaped (Rear-left brake) and brake fluid was lost - so i've tried to bleed the system - unsucessfully!

I've done it the haynes way with two people until the girlfriend got bored. Tried a simple kit with a one way valve and the same kit with the valve removed and a 1/2 bottle of fluid maintained. I've tried with engine running and without.

I bleed in the order RR/LR/RF/LF as per Haynes.

I can get a hard pedal without the engine running - but then I get a long pedal travel and minimal brakes....

No ABS. No bleed nipple on the master cylinder. The cylinder has never gone below the MIN mark.

On the plus side its had a fluid change!

Cheers for some help!

Hello again,

Just to complete the story. I've backbled (the one where you leave the pedal pushed down) overnight. Whay Hay! The brakes work now!!

As mentioned - not able to road test till Tuesday - but seems great!

Cheers very much for the help!

Anyone seen the new four door Tesla S:

www.reghardware.co.uk/2009/03/27/tesla_unveils_mod.../

Looks pretty good to me apart from the 17" touch screen in the dashboard. Don't think I could afford one though!

If this car really could have a range of 300 miles on a charge then at some time in the future, we could all be driving proper electric cars. Read more

If they can solve the range problem set up a national network of power points
make batteries that will last a decent amount of time (preferably the life of the
car0 then I would not have a problem with electricity.

All of the above will be solved if someone can come up with a decent method for storing the energy. This is the only problem currently with electric cars, in all other technical aspects they are superior, but as you say they lack soul...

I don't think we will be forced into totally electric cars yet though as the
oil industry is just too big and has too much influence. The fact that oil
is running short is nonsense according to a friend in the business the oil companies
are still finding new sources.

The oil isnt running out just yet and probably wont in my lifetime. Its more a question of supply and demand and the current low price of oil meaning less exploration and development of new sources - hence why Gordo B was concerned about the low price of oil a while back(he got something right for once). When the global ecomony picks up again and the price of oil soars once more you might have no choice but to consider an electric car if petrol/diesel is around £4 a litre.

seals?

I thought they were bonded - I'm sure my old 9000 had a bonded/glued screen. There is I think a bit of trim across the top but it is glued in. Not really a diy job I would think.

Otherwise try saabscene or similar for info (maybe elkparts, nordic or partsforsaabsonline)

Apart from these bits the car is good cond and a good engine, gearbox clutch etc 84000 mls

Question is whats a ballpark figure to get these bits fixed and through its mot or should i bite the bullet. i only have 500 to spend either on repairs or another car

having in the past had car brake pipes fail on the rolling road rather than on the slip road of a motorway im inclined to say with the new vosa rules of pass or advise those pipes must be bad to fail and DO need changing
its now on the vosa computer and even if you did get away with a pass at another station (highly unlikely) and you had total brake failure on the open road i dont think you would like the queens porridge once the court summing up was complete
problem with your car is its foreign and on the verge of being scrap due to fixtures and fittings shearing rather than undoing so a brake pipe exodus is quite labour intensive plus shockers for this model wont wsell in quantity and will be dear
i would scrap it if you can afford the hit

I'm having real trouble with the BCA SureSell people

After decided that they sounded like a good hassle free, fast, safe way of selling my car. Their website states - "The simpler, safer way to sell your Car or Van, Choose the hassle-free way to sell your car or van with 'Sure Sell' - avoid the hassle often associated with private selling'"

It also states
--------------
How soon do I get paid?
The Sure Sell scheme will send you a cheque within 3 - 5 working days of your vehicle selling. The payment will be guaranteed so there are no worries about bouncing cheques or handling cash.
--------------

I placed in theSureSell auction on 13th March in Manchester. It sold that day for 30% more than I was offered trade in - so I was quite happy.

They even called on the 17th to say it had sold and that I shuld expect the cheque within 3 to 5 days

I emailed them on 25th to say - where is the cheque - to be told she didn;t nkow why and would contact the branch.

I just phoned them again - she says 'still no idea why I have not been paid'. She did say it may be a problem with the person who bough the car . BUT this is the exact reason why I chose to sell via SureSell.

Is anyone else having issues collect the payment on a SureSell sale ?

To be honest and I speak as somebody in the trade BCA and Manheim are
a duopoly and don't really care about any sellers unless you are punting 1000 cars
through them.

>>>>>>>>>>>>got to say i agree totally to the point i dont use them anymore and was really saddened when premier popped
to the OP you need to get yourself down to the auction, find what corner theyve pushed your car into and check it carefully for damage
you then need to insist they put it through their full valet service at no charge to you and insist they re enter it at a time where it will attain a decent price
be polite but firm
proper bad sevice from a company that should know better

as for getting a part of the deposit off the failed buyer youve more chance of becoming mayor of london (i once did though from a different auction house and got free entry for the car and no commissionns added but that was in the good old days of the 20th century)
