Hello everyone, I'm new to this site and I've recently bought a '98 Mondeo 1.8TD, it's got 120K on the clock and seems to run well - most of the time. I've just noticed that when going up a nearby steep hill and having dropped to 2nd gear on full throttle, I get some 'stuttering' as if I'm running out of fuel - although I have half a tank. It doesn't last long, although it's done it on a couple of occasions on the same hill, under the same conditions.

I've also noticed that when idling and if I blip the throttle, I hear what I can only describe as a'squelching' sound which appears to be coming from the passenger front footwell.

Finally, I've spotted a small in line fuel filter (looks obviously not a standard fitment) in the fuel pipe to the injection pump.

Could these three things be related do you think? Is there anything throttle related near the passenger footwell that could cause the noise I'm hearing? What's the most likely cause for the apparant fuel starvation problemm?

Sorry for the barrage of questions - I'd just like to nip this in the bud as quick as poss!

Thanks, Damian. Read more

fuel starvation is likely from the aftermarket filter being a bit clogged up..i would do away with it and fit a new filter in the proper filter housing on the car....the squelching sound is likely to be air in the heater matrix as its proberbly got a pin hole water leak also causing air into the system..does the front windows mist up slightly??

According to this it looks like the end for Lada cars. Over 200,000 face losing their jobs and a fair sized city seems economically doomed. As someone who confesses to owning one back in the 70s its a bit sad. I did smile at the report on the BBC this evening though when they stated that because of parts shortages Lada had been assembling cars with components missing. I thought they always did!

Still they outlived Rover Read more

Looks like Putin is looking to bail out the company to the tune of 20 billion roubles.

hello folks. I was wondering if anyone has come across drive shaft failure on a mrk 1 toyota yaris ?? although i have yet to get my car diagnosed ( booked into garage 6/3) i have what i think sound like drive shaft wear ( eg a loud rumbling/mechanical wear noise when turning on hard lock -even start to hear it not on full lock- . I have a few queries namely: How common is this fault on a yaris?? estimated costs?? ( do you have to get the full dshaft or can by a cv joint for a yaris??, my chances of getting a contribution from toyota towards the costs( always been serviced at a toyota main dealer and only 53 miles?? and how safe is it drive ( i appreciate hard to tell unless you hear the noise) . on the car by car breakdown for a yaris it does mention its a point to look for when looking for possible faults just wondering how common it is?. thanks andrew Read more

just thought i would update this thread and say it turned out not to be a drive shaft ( the noise was caused by a build up of rust on the break disk ) the noise only happened when on full lock. So am very relieved it wasnt a drive shaft !!!. Thought any fellow yaris drivers or anyone considering buying a yaris may appreciate the update.

thanks for all the advise.

I am contemplating swapping a perfectly good and highly reliable car for something, well, a little more interesting. I have done a few sums on what I paid for it, discounted by things that would need doing anyway so they dont really count, and then allowing for the miles I have done at Xp per mile then really, when you look at it, taking all things into account, and why shouldnt I 'cos its my money and we only come this way once, at the end of the day, well, its a bargain.

There are various strategies that we can use to justify or rationalise the otherwise irreconciliable. Bangernomics is one that appealed to me for many years - 10 months MOT and starts all on its own, I was your man. Butr what a load of embarassing rubbish. A Hillman Mix super estate with rattling big ends, ugh. Buy new at big discount and then run until the warranty runs out might be another approach. How do backroomers justify their purchases? With the exception of Rattle of course who seems to be more interested in the journey than the arrival - but, hey, that's another option. Prevarication could extend the decision almost infinitely. So how do backroomers rationalise their buying decisions?

Actually, the TVR dealers struggled to fix the mechanical bits as well. As for the electrics, well I think TVR use their own in house made electrons. They're like normal electrons but cheaper, don't work as well and overheat in traffic.

Actually, to be fair to TVR, it's notoriously difficult to make electrical systems work properly in cars with plastic bodywork as it makes earthing rather difficult.

Just put the car back on the deck after a tantilising wait for the new Genuine Exchange unit from GSF (£150-00+ Vat) to arrive. It works great. No more leaks. Had a hell of a job getting the old one out, but by dropping (and supporting) the sub frame about 3/4 inch I managed to wiggle it out. The new one slipped in fairly easily.
I would suggest to any one doing a rack replacement to run all the bolts etc into their threads and out again, whilst out of the vehicle as it is quite tight once back in situ. This would clear any paint etc off the threads and make life a bit easier, especially the 40 torx bolt holding the hydraulic lines in place. The heat shield was a bit of a madam but eventually slipped back into place.
Hope this is of some help to others attempting this.

I like the bit about an operator being ' over zealous ". How about them being ' plain stupid" or ' badly trained" seeing as how they are supposed to check the first picture of the car on the road markings laid down in the camera area and then second photograph to work out the speed. As the car in question wasn't even on those markings but parked in a nearby bay, this to me shouts ' gross incompetence '.

Then she was told ''When I first disputed the claim, I was told that mistakes are never made. ' Mistakes never made ? So now we have an absolute foolproof system of policing by camera . News to me. Read more

"I knew there was no way I'd be out at 10.22pm on a week night."
Weird. She doesn't sound like any of the 19-year olds that I know!

Ah, but she's a 19 year old *with* a sensible job. How many of those are there? :)

Hi all,

Can anyone give me a recommendation on where I can hire a nice car from for a friend's wedding day in August? I'm in the North East so unless they deliver the car it will have to be somewhere within about 100 miles maximum for me to collect.

I don't want a car with driver as the whole point is that I will be driving the car (my friend's request) so it has to be a self-drive company.

Cars up for considersation are 300C, A8, 5 and 7 Series, E and S-Class but I'll look at anything else that has a suitably nice feel about it. If possible I would want the thing for the whole weekend so that I can play with it the day after the wedding but it's not essential.

My mate's a girl (obviously I'm mate's with the groom but I only know him through her) so once she's decided that she wants something I tend not to argue lol.

I'll stay sober during the day but as my parents will be at the night time function I'll allow my dad to drive it back as it's only a fiver per day for extra drivers. I don't normally need to drink to enjoy myself in fact I've not long got in from a sober night out in Newcastle, but her reception is being held in a fantastic beachside pub with a great atmosphere so I will be partaking in the festivities. It's at the bottom of a cliff and a lot of the interior is simply tunnelled out of the rock, fantastic! Also, once you've had a drink the beach seems even more fun! :-)

Will check out Guy Salmon although the last time I looked they were very expensive, the name of the game is cost limitations with this day! Fortunately my mate isn't wearing a big white dress so space shouldn't be a massive problem.

My car was written off in the early hours of last friday by someone who did a hit and run - we did manage to get a partial reg, and was able to complete it when his car was taken somewhere for repairs privately... I passed the complete reg to the police and insurance company and when I got a call from my insurers to say they were going to DVLA check the other car, that it did have insurance on the vehicle and they would contact the other party, I was pretty pleased.

I was shocked that 2 hours later I had a very sheepish 19 odd year old lad at my front door who admitted to my face he had been the driver. He looked so scared I didn't have the heart to give him a good old rant, but thanked him for owning up - albiet a bit late.

He did at one point hint that he may not actually be insured himself to drive that car..... what should I do? Tell my insurance company this little nugget?

If the car he was driving has insurance but the lad is not entitled to drive it, does that mean that I will not get a payout from them? I have comp and protected, but if my company has to stump up, I will lose my excess and I will get a strike against my NCD protection, plus it will affect the premium on my classic car policy too as I have had a claim against me...... I just don't need that right now....

Any advice?

.........the fact that your answer to the question 'have you made a
claim?' is now yes will increase the baseline quote which the discount applies to.

Because this appears to be a common opinion, not long ago I queried this with my insurance (The Co-operative, formerly CIS) agent and he assured me that it was not true. I've been insured exclusively with The Co-operative since 1965 so I don't know what other insurers do.
