02 2.0 Steering rack. Fitting an exchange unit. - steve is trying
Just put the car back on the deck after a tantilising wait for the new Genuine Exchange unit from GSF (£150-00+ Vat) to arrive. It works great. No more leaks. Had a hell of a job getting the old one out, but by dropping (and supporting) the sub frame about 3/4 inch I managed to wiggle it out. The new one slipped in fairly easily.
I would suggest to any one doing a rack replacement to run all the bolts etc into their threads and out again, whilst out of the vehicle as it is quite tight once back in situ. This would clear any paint etc off the threads and make life a bit easier, especially the 40 torx bolt holding the hydraulic lines in place. The heat shield was a bit of a madam but eventually slipped back into place.
Hope this is of some help to others attempting this.
