Do the VW 1.4 and 1.8TSI petrol engines have dual mass flywheels? Read more
Yesterday I drove my wife's Golf (which never had a knock sensor and was designed to run on 91 RON petrol) 10 miles to a supermarket with no problems. As the petrol gauge was on empty I put in 10 pounds of 95 RON petrol. Five minutes later I heard a knocking noise coming from under the bonnet only when the engine was under load. I thought it might be a CV joint or exhaust heat shield etc. but I could not find the source of the noise. Today the noise was worse, so as a last resort I put in 5 pounds of finest BP 97 RON petrol and 5 minutes later I could not get the car to make any unusual noise at all. I wonder what that supermarket sold me! Read more
This is a simple carb engine which should run happily on 95 octane or lower. Late Mk2 Gtis,16valve and all Mk3 can run better on higher than 95 octane.
There are no fancy ECUs or injection systems to worry about pn a Mk2 1.6. Knock sensors were only fitted to injection engines from about 87/88 when the GTi 8 valve changed from K Jetronic to Motronic. In 1985 I think it would run on 2* star which was probably below 95. Sounds like the timing is out and is too advanced. Don't know off the top of my head (Gti's I could reel off). You would need a timing light and a look at the Haynes manual as to whether pipes need to be pulled off and how to line up the timing marks. I would think it is also done at idle when the engine is hot. If the car uses points rather than electronic ignition (and some Golf 2s in 85/86 were basic points ignition) as the points wear the timing advances so change the points too. If there are 2 small pipes to the distributor make sure they are in good order (just pull them off, place finger over end and suck - it should hold pressure). With 2 pipes 1 acts as a retard ignition on acceleration.
When all working again, there could be a build up of carbon on the plugs and valves which can glow red hot and ignite the fuel before the spark. A good Italian tune up should sort out any gently driven town car.
Oh, and a tip. If timing not been done for a while, the distributor can seize to the block. Give it a good squirt of pentrating oil the night before at the very base (the 13mm bolt needs to be loose to move the distributor round for timing adkjustment).
Asking on behalf of a friend, she has an Audi A3, '54 reg. 2.0 TDi, 80k miles.
We believe the head gasket has gone, amongst other things!
She has taken it to my very reliable mechanic, who has said it's beyond him and will cost thousands to put right!
The question is, what should she do with it now.
She bought it two years ago, from some garage on the side of a road, and paid £13k for it.. It sounds to me like she's been done.. But obviously as it was 2 years ago, she has no come back..
In current state car is pretty much worth scrap i guess..
Any ideas welcome???? Read more
Sorry for the slow reply.. As i said, it's my friends car, so this is all second hand info etc. .. She's a 27yr old girl, with little knowledge of cars, as am i..
To the first reply, yes it does have a full service history and she has been using the correct oil.
Symptoms.
Does it start, No.. Answer to that at the moment is because the starter motor is dead, The starter motor was fairly new (second starter motor), so at a guess it died due to over use in trying to start the car..
Before starter motor died, i'm not sure but i guess it would keep turning over untill it did start..
Re. overheating, not sure, will find out.
Mechanic mentioned above was worried about re-calibrating the fuel-injection system.
Having just purchased a new CRV. I found it came with the 3yr roadside assistance. Looking at the CRV new price list (i am looking at the one dated 01/09) it quite clearly states qualifying customers who have their Honda serviced at one of our participating dealerships will now recieve complimentry roadside assistance. I may take up the offer of the fixed price service for 5yrs. I asked the question. ' does that mean years 4 & 5 i get complimentry roadside assistance' dont know was the answer. I rang Honda UK and they didnt know at first. They then got back to me saying if i get my car serviced at my local dealership, i would. I wonder now how many years that would be for and is this deal for any other make of Honda. I can't comment on other brochures i havent seen them. But i thought you should all know it may be the case where you are. Ask the question do you qualify and is the local dealership participating, if so its quite a good deal really. Read more
yeah thats how i read it bill payer. Honda will get help to you, get a message to your family and more importantly get you to where you want to go. I wonder if that does includes the vehicle. I certainly agree its worth having. look at the saving to be made not having the usual AA/RAC cover.
While returning from mot station with friends Nissan Sunny (which it passed) the car started stuttering as tho running out of petrol.
I had some fuel in the boot and topped it up......after a lot of cursing and cranking the engine eventually fired and drove home without further trouble.
The following day the car refused to start.....cranked over no problem but would not fire.
I assumed the filter had picked up the muck at the end of the tank and replaced it.......to no avail.
removing the inlet pipe from filter revealed a good strong surge of petrol which I assume rules out the fuel pump.
Cleaned contacts inside cap and rotor arm but still no go.
Removing number one plug and testing for spark with engine turned over revealed a weak orange spark????????????
I am sure the spark should be a healthy blueish colour........could this be a condenser problem?
Am really stumped on this and any help is most welcome.
Ta in advance. Read more
well done. now dont neglect your coolant changes every 2 years 50 50 mix use soft water
Can anyone help me please?
I have a 205 Gti 1.6 and need to replace the clutch. I have read the Haynes manual and followed it methodically, however I am stumped at removing the drivers side driveshaft from the intermediate bearing mounted on the back of the engine block. I have loosened the 2 no. 10mm bolts either side of the shaft but cannot seem to get the driveshaft out.
Any reccommendations would be appreciated. Read more
Required some pursuasion but came off eventually! Cheers Adam

My Fiesta Flight (Y reg 2001) has been tracking to the right for the last short while. Also at high speeds (65mph and over) the steering wheel vibrates and moves very slightly from left to right.
It's been ok to control but I'm taking it to my local Kwik Fit tomorrow in Gravesend as it needs to be looked at (I haven't been living in my area long and don't know of any good local independant garages, and don't work locally to ask colleagues who they recommend).
Has anyone had any experiences as to what might be causing this and how much it will cost to fix?
Grateful for help. Read more
Tracking out of adjustment will cause it to pull one way but wont cause a vibration, that is more likely wheel balance problems or worn suspension/steering components.
Last time i had the tracking adjusted it cost me £25, but that was a couple of years ago !
I've been experiencing a cold start problem for a few months now and this week the car has been into a diesel specialist (Diesco in Ipswich) for diagnosis. The car has had one previous owner, fsh, low mileage (now up to 34k from 28k when I bought it 6 months ago)
Cylinder compression readings as follows
No. 1 25 bar
No. 2 28 bar
No. 3 25 bar
No. 4 28 bar
Diesco tested the fuel system right through but stopped short of removing and testing the injectors and testing the spray pattern and flow rates. They have dismissed the notion that I have bore wear or valve problems (SO I HOPE THEY'RE RIGHT!!). However, that said they don't know what is wrong. The compression difference of 3 bar is 45psi which is significant but unexplainable. I don't know what else they did to the car but the engine is running noticeably stronger today. I'm going to suck it and see. One suggestion was renozzling the injectors - cost approx £90 a go. With no guarantee that will make any difference. Anyone got an idea as to the root cause? and what to try next? greatly appreciated. Read more
I don't suppose you know if they checked the fuel filter for metal particles do you?
That's suspiciously low mileage for a 02 HDi. Have you tried contacting the previous owner in case he had trouble and that's why the mileage is low or the car traded in?
Steve.
