90 1.6 Offside drive shaft removal problem - 205Rally
Can anyone help me please?
I have a 205 Gti 1.6 and need to replace the clutch. I have read the Haynes manual and followed it methodically, however I am stumped at removing the drivers side driveshaft from the intermediate bearing mounted on the back of the engine block. I have loosened the 2 no. 10mm bolts either side of the shaft but cannot seem to get the driveshaft out.
Any reccommendations would be appreciated.

Clamp a large pair of mole grips tightly on shaft between the bearing and diff and hammer outwards.

Thanks Peter, I'm concerned that hitting it with a hammer may damage the bearing. Are they quite robust?

If the bearing is in good condition it shouldn't suffer, you will only be pulling it out of the housing, you'r not actually hitting the bearing, just the molegrips. Do make sure that the ecentric bolts are clear of the bearing.
