Does the clutch take up when you select drive and give you "creep" like a torque converter auto or does it only take up when you press the accelerator? (meaning that with the handbrake on you would select drive, gently press the accelerator, feel the clutch take up and then release the handbrake to pull away) Read more

"That clinches it - I don't want a gearbox that needs a self preservation system!"

You do when you know it's possible to do racing starts with a DSG box - you may not be tempted, but plenty of lease car drivers are. Too many of these and it shuts down.

Just got in. Guys with yellow Hi Vis jackets on pretty much every corner throughout Northampton plus cars parked up on every major junction containing two guys in yellow jackets. Everything from a Tuareg to a rusty Vectra so assuming not Plod.

Anyone know whats happening? Read more

I think it fairly obvious that traffic engineers don't cycle very much. Nor do they walk far, except on site! Otherwise faux cycle-lane markings, less than a mans shoulder width, would not be strewn about willy-nilly, to the confusion of all.

Should i buy ordinary with one year guarantee for £26 or heavy duty with 2 year guarantee for £40. I only do about 4000 miles a year. Thanks. Read more

Your car battery will usually have the rating on it.
Get the amp hours the same and amps or cca (cold cranking amps) the same.
Don't buy more or less than the car came with.
overkill wont hurt but might be a waste of money.
don't worry about the guarantee.

Following on from my comment on the Lada thread, how about an 'unusual sightings' only seen when 'gricing' Streetview ?

I thought Proton had virtually shut up shop in this country but saw one of these little cars the other day.

Anyone own one and are they any good? They look a bit like the new Hyundai i120 but you just don't see them on the road. Read more

Don't write Proton off. They are very tough cars and owe more to 90s Japanese (Mitsubishi Lancer) design - and reliablity. In our family we have a battered Persona Tdi that has 150,000 miles and goes link stink. They are the reliable Ladas of the 21st century!

The fun starts here !
Sunday, April 5th sees the Big Breakfast Run to Prees in Shropshire.
Hundreds of machines on show. 4 cafes and loads of bikers out for the day.
We usually meet up at the Shell garage, Sandiway, Cheshire at 10am and ride down the A49 to Prees. Then it's off to the Ponderosa at the top of the Horseshoe Pass for tea and buns.
Anyone wants to meet up at either end, look for my burgundy red Silverwing, Reg

Spotted a gleaming red 2002 Punto the other week at £1,700 and later another, a MK1 at £350.

Thye former looked good for another 7 years and the latter - surely for a year? I guess my approach to the £350 job would be to just drive it into the ground if it drove `straight` just keeping the fluid topped up.

You know how it is though, you tend to notice examples of the cars you`re actually driving, more than those you are not.
There must surely be dozens of cars like this though, in all urban areas, in car lots and by the roadside? Has anyone seen any near Manchester that would help Rattle, before he risks losing his driving skills through lack of practice? Read more

For ordinary cars - Fords Vauxhalls etc cars between 10 and 5 years old
all seem to be available at pretty much about the same - 1-2k for a
big car 2-3k for a small car.

Yes, my bangernomics Omegas / Vectras tend to cost less than poorly equipped Corsas of the same vintage. Presumably prices at this end of teh market are driven more by youngsters looking for cheap to insure cars than bangernomics oldies like me.

(This is probably more technical, but has a strong discussion slant, so I posted here friendly mod...)

Well, I took the plunge and picked up a Mondeo. Tdci, 130bhp. So thats pretty much the whole collection I've had- Ka, Fiesta (numerous models), Focus, C-Max, and now Mondeo.

The dealer, who was based in Leeds (I'm near Glasgow) was upfront about the car- its had some work to it over its 7 year history. The major worry for me was the fact that the clutch, flywheel and starter were replaced only 2000 miles ago, but as this work came with a receipt, all seemed well.

Test-drive was fine, car was in fine nick for a 7 year old, so I bought it. All seemed well, but then, about 100 miles into the journey home, I noticed that accelerating reasonably hard in 5th gear from about 45mph provoked an odd shudder through the car. Odd, I thought, probably hit a pothole and dinged a wheel or similar.

Imagine my surprise, dear reader, when my local garage tell me that the shudder is definitely not suspension or wheels but is the clutch. I see from the receipt that the garage who fitted it appeared to use a DMF and presumably the attendant bits that go with it.

Its going to be such a hassle sorting this out. PITA. Can a newly-fitted clutch and flywheel really start to fail this fast?

cheers

Hi
I am interested in a Volvo V70 I have seen on Ebay. It is a D5 SE spec, 04, 54-plate with 73K miles. It is for sale 'make an offer' or 'buy it now' for £7995. Any opinions on the price? Seems a little high to me, should I offer 7K? Also, if any V70 owners can suggest anything to watch out for I would be grateful. Thanks, Robert Read more

The winter pack, ie heated front seats are a bonus and well worth considering.
