Does anybody know if the new VW 1.4TSI 122PS and 1.8TSI 160PS petrol engines as fitted into the Skoda Superb Mk 2 suffer from any problems, especially the piston/bore ovalisation that plagued the 1.4 and 1.6FSI engines? Read more

think stretched Golf rather than stretched Passat

The Passat is now a stretched Golf too mind ;-)

I'm not sure who it's aimed at. I fancied one but didn't the time before last because we couldn't get VAG cars at the time via the company scheme and the youngest did not want a Skoda ;-) And he's too young to remember the jokes.

For the next car I will seriously think about a Skoda but by 2011 there might be an Octavia Mk III hybrid ;-)

We had one go at uni after an end-of-term break - we think it was one of the halls' cleaners, and a pipe in the freezer section was split.

Again, unfortunately a new fridge/freezer was required.

More manufacturers are going the direct injection petrol route. VAG, Porsche, Mitsubishi, BMW, Mercedes Benz to name a few, with most of the others exploring the technology.

Given that early examples of the VW FSI and Ford SCi have a pretty terrible reputation for longevity and reliability, and even PSA abandoned their first Di engine on reliability grounds, has this technology now improved to the point where it's a sensible long term ownership proposition? Or were the problems overstated in the first place?

This isn't a precursor to a buying decision, I'm just curious. On paper, these engines do seem to make a significant dent in diesel's running cost advantage, without the noise and truncated rev range compromises of even a good diesel engine.

Cheers

Ok, i've been looking around alot of forums trying to find a solution to my current problem, but have now decided to join a forum full of bright people who may be able to help me out!
Basically, I recieved 2 convictions in Sept 2004 for a very silly offence the previous March. I had been driving about 6 months at the time. One night I went to the cinema with a couple of mates. Afterwards we were in a car park ready to go home at around midnight. Before we left a friend asked if he could practice a reverse in to a bay in my car, as he had his driving test a few weeks later. I agreed, at the time not believing we were committing an offence. To cut a long story short two police officers came over and asked what we were doing etc... very politiely I told him and they charged us with no insurance.
I recieved Aiding and Abetting no insurance, and an LC24. I went to court and did not get 6 points, instead I was banned for 2 months.

That silly incident has given me ridiculous premiums since '03 - but I take it as a lesson learnt. However, in September '08 i sent away my license to have the endorsements removed, as I had to change my address anyway. My license came back clean.

Since then I am due to re-new my car insurance, but as we all know, insurance companies want to know about any convicitions in the last 5 years...

So, I rang the DVLA and asked them the question. They said to me that as far as they are concerned, those convicitons are gone, and they do not understand why insurance companies want to know about these sort of convicitons if they are wiped from your license.

So I'm kind of confused, if I don't mention these wiped convicitons I can save myself about £500.
But if you have an accident does the insurance company go to the DVLA to ensure you have no convicitons, or do they check your previous insurers? Because from my previous insurer, then they would see that I have a conviction date which is not 5 years until Sept 09.

I could really use some information the clear this up, thank you for reading.

The Insurers will not mind if you are a few days out on the conviction date as long as you get the right month and year so they can charge the correct premium they will not object if you get the actual date slightly wrong. Although if you can put the correct date in its obviously better

Hi I have just got myself a 1.8 Zetec I got the car cheap as it was sold with engine problems the owner thought it was a snapped timing belt. I have had a quick look inside the covers and the belt still seems to be holding tention. I have tryed to turn the engine over by hand and it all seens to be ok it turns smoothly. So I decided to to try and start it at first all I was getting was the starter motor clicking, so I tryed a new starter and that seems to turn the engive over very slowly but it wont start the car I Can smell petrol when the engine turns, but its not spinning anywhere near fast enough to start it.

Does anyone have any ideas what could be wrong ?

I watched your video, the engine is turning ok, it sounds like there's no compression or it's very flooded, might be worth doing a compression test with a tester that screws into the plug holes. If the compression is down it could be incorrect valve timing due to the cambelt or valve damage caused by the above.

Recent change of local Volvo dealership prompted a call to say hello. When booking in my car details he spotted an alert linked to the engine no. relating to the swirling (!) arm. On inspection informed me that the arm had failed and needed replacing. No warranty as mileage criteria exceeded. As I have only recently acquired the vehicle I wonder if this was a recall in the past and would like to hear from other owners who have experienced the same problem. Read more

For your info. Volvo Main Dealer informs me that a Volvo modification part is available which means the rectification work does not involve major component removal and should result in much lower repair bill. Fingers crossed.

There are two rubber mounting points for the front subframe they are situated just behind the bumber these rot and cause all sorts of noises always missed in the UK mot. Also cross member that holds the engine in place is a known weak spot if not attended to the engine ends up on the road.

Last week, I ordered a new VW MK 6 Golf 5dr hatchback 1.4 TSI 'SE' with a few extras including a sunroof.
I few hours after signing, the salesperson got back to me and explained my expected delivery of 8 to 10/12 weeks had now increased to 16 weeks although this was going to be confirmed. It seems that a sunroof can extend delivery times.
I don't know quite how I'll survive the intervening period. Still, I have a nice low mileage MK 5 with which to enjoy the Spring and early Summer.

I think that I will be contacting VW myself and having a moan about this absurdity. Read more

Insurance certificate? I am surprised the dealership didn't mention their own scheme where they supply
a 7 day cover note (from VW insurance) for free to get it taxed. They
hope to get your insurance business but you just let it lapse.

They did, as I have already said. However a friend of mine did this last year and had subsequent problems, being pestered by the insurers for the balance of premium after the 7 days had elapsed. Somehow he'd given them a credit/debit card number and then taken the premium from his card.
I don't need that hassle and anyway it only adds a few extra days to the 5 months wait

Hi

I just use Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF for short) to top up my Vectra, Megane and 306. its the same stuff at power steering fluid but a hell of a lot cheaper! I just use what brand happens to be available (Carlube at the moment), has been fine in any car I have owned over the years with no wear or corrosion to seals. (p.s. not that my cars go through it fast, just a bit every few years)

hope this helps
