Rattle,

I think that the Eurorail scheme covers over 25s (we considered it a few years ago) Thomas Cook publish an excellent European Railway Timetable - remarkable reading at any time of year whether traveling or not.

SWMBO's Corsa (1.2 petrol) was repaired under warranty 2 weeks ago for cutting out and the lamba sensor replaced. The engine management light came on. Yesterday it started cutting out again and today it stopped 10 times in the commute to work (city traffic). The engine has warmed up when this starts and it cuts out when decelerating but this time there's no engine management light. It will have to go back to dealers (for its fourth visit) but anyone any suggestions as to what the fault could be? MAF sensor?

This car is becoming a lemon - she's had it from new but it's appalling the amount of time it's been back to the dealer. I do not recommend Corsas.

Any hints or tips on this one would be much appreciated. Engine turns over but fails to start. Engine has been difficult to start recently but when it does everything runs fine and it will start and stop for the rest of the day but like most of us doesn't like mornings. I have proved fuel to injector pump and battery is fully charged, fuel is getting to cylinders as when it does start there is an environmentally damaging cloud out the back end initially. Engine is definately free to turn and will do on attempting to start - it sounds as if it wants to fire but won't. I have run 100 miles since last fuel top up which had injector clean added to it. Did 30 mile run on dual carriageway in 4th gear the other day to run at higher rpm to help cleaning injectors / pistons. Anyone got any ideas??? Read more

The seals have gone in the priming pump a comon problem replace the pump housing with a genuine part and a new filter.

Also worth checking the valve clearances are not too tight they can tighten up on there own, not sure if yours is shimed.

Hi, I tried to tax my vehicle last night but noticed that my MOT has expired on the 27th of February. Will I now receive a automatic fine and/or points on my license? I still have tax until 31 March. Read more

Rover P6B

I owned a 3500S and had it as my daily runner for ten years - bought in 1984 for £300, slightly scruffy but usable - but retired it in 1994 as it was beginning to rust and at the time I had a young son and a need for rear seatbelts, which my Rover lacked. However, at some point, I'd like another - I was very happy with mine - and wondered if there were any particular problems to highlight. I knew someone who worked for British Aerospace who cut a hole in the boot of his then covered it with a panel fixed down with fasteners only found elsewhere in the Harrier - this made working on the brakes much easier, but I never got round to doing the same to mine. What is parts availability like nowadays? And have members of this forum got any concerns about the unconventional suspension?

Also, to improve or not? Could one put on a modern 5/6 speed manual (likely ZF)? If not, is an SD1 5-speed any real improvement over the S 4-speed? I know I broke a layshaft on reverse on mine and had to get a replacement 'box... also, what was build quality like on the SD1/Range Rover/TR8/MG RV8 engines like? Likewise, how did the bored-out 3.9 compare with the silky-smooth 3.5? I'd like to make the car as economical as possible (my stock 3500S with 2 SU carbs did 29mpg on a really long motorway run) - would fitting EFI be worth doing? Can one fit an ECU? Would an ECU be worth having? I wonder about using an SD1 Vitesse engine with the EFI, but I'm not sure. Help! I'm not going down the LPG route, by the way. Read more

Hah! Funny, I'm looking for an E39 5-series touring, too. I'm surprised the somewhat lethargic 2000TC returned much the same economy as my 3500S - you could have had one after all!

Hi All

I was wondering what is the best way to run in a brand new Kia Rio Diesel.
I picked up the car on Monday and am really happy with it.

The manual states 'varied driving' but this could mean any number of things.

The car dealer said it does not need running in and to just drive it normally.

So now I am really confused how to run the car in properly.

Current mileage 250 miles. It had 40 when I picked it up.

any ideas ?

As said before if you are too gentle with your engine, it won't bed in properly. I saw 4k at times ore 1000 miles in my Fabia 1.9 Tdi and now have a very rapid and economical engine that burns next to no oil. I was told not to rev the nuts of the car meaning steaming it quickly up to 4.5k and dramatically and suddenly increasing load. However smooth and progressive acceleration to higher revs should not cause problems. If you have mechanical sympathy you can feel and sense that you are stepping over the line.

I recently bought a 1994 auto Corsa Merit, but have had several problems with a cold start. The engine was cutting out when idling, or not starting at all. The computer came up with error code 35, no idle speed control. I have now had the following parts replaced by 2 seperate garages:

Idle Control Valve
Oil seal replaced
Spark plugs changed
Oil and oil filter changed (twice!)
Radiator fan switch replaced (twice!)
Cylinder head gasket replaced (although I was only given an invoice for £5.28 for the part so not sure what work they actually did!)
Thermostat kit replaced - was invoiced but not sure whether this was actually done...

After I had all this done (some included in service) the car was starting better, but engine light was coming on/going off at random. Then the sports mode light started coming on/going off at random. I took the car in and was told that the same error code was coming up. The garage readjusted the ignition timer to 10 degrees, and this then cleared the code.

However, after driving away from the garage with no problems, the sports mode light now comes on for a short while when the engine is turned on, then goes off (this was flickering intermittently before). The car doesn't have power until it warms up, and hesitates on acceleration.

The last garage told me he didn't think it was a gearbox fault, but I'm at my wits end as to what else I can do!

Any suggestions much appreciated!!

On starting the car my sports mode light is flashing and is almost powerless in pulling away.

The flashing light is telling you the car has gone into limp home mode.
Is there any way 2 control this untill i can get it fixed and did it work whe u tried what you did??

The only way would be to use the auto box in manual mode - ie, select 1, 2, 3, etc instead of the box doing the work for you.

Ultimately though you need the fault code(s) reading out, sooner rather than later.

ps, donning my moderators hat for a moment. Can you use proper words and not 'txt' talk please - thanks. DD.
