I always dread this time of year when the darker evenings approach, it seems that every vehicle with badly aligned lights comes out of hiding to annoy everyone. Do these vehicles ever get checked? I thought it was part of the MOT to check lights were not only operative but also aligned correctly. Came across one last evening at approx 7.45pm and I thought he was looking for hostile aircraft the way his lights were pointing. Why can't cameras pick these sort of things up? Good old fashioned policing used to deal with this, but what's the answer now? Concrete. Read more

Thanks Andrew your idea fixed the problem very well
I was a bit timid at first bending the frame back but got there in the end i was very suprised how flexable the window frame was and now the door shuts nicer and no wind noise or water leaks at all
Nice one Beers all round
cheers Tony
The problem I have is a booming noise, heard loudest from the drivers seat. My first suspicions were transmission/wheel bearing as it is not related to engine revs and is unaffected by road surface or tyre pressure. I?ve swapped the wheels front to rear and the noise is still there. There is no vibration felt through the steering.
It occurs from cold and originally occurred at over 60mph. The dealer could find no fault when I first reported it. A few months on and the booming noise has stopped over 60mph, but now occurs between 30-50 mph peaking at just over 40mph.
The noise stops when turning right sharply in this speed range, but returns when on the straight or turning left.
Does anyone have any suggestions as to what the problem might be? Thanks.

You'll be wasting your time pursuing Mitsubishi over this - they make VW look helpful.
Hello all i joined here today.
So i passed my test on Friday last week, and have stated diving my lovely Rover 25 around.
Fine you think.
But im paranoid being on probation for 2 years and only able to incur 6 points - i want 0. I dont intend on speeding, im a sensible fellow, limits are limits but sometimes you cant help it, or you look down (especially as a new driver!) and you are a few over, so you adjust speed and so on.
Okay, so yeah if i dont speed i wont get stung. But when im driving im seeing this and that and the other car bomb it past me....and IM the one worried?!
If i was snapped driving at night by a speed camera, how bright is the flash? Im assuming it'd be pretty difficult not to notice right?
Like i say, i hate these people that bomb it about, they ruin it for everyone, but the seem SO strict on it it just leaves me concerned.
Cheers peoples Read more
Forgive me Goat if I'm wrong.
You've been out enjoying your new found freedom and want to know:
- which cameras flash and would be obvious had you gone past one too quickly?
- which cameras don't flash?
Brought a 2.0d jaguar estate in April. Everything seems find(except for a noisy air con unit). I now have two small faults, rear door won't lock and now windscreen washer is not working. Pump seems to be working, and despite clearing pipes and blowing down main pipe till water bubbles out of reservoir it is still not working. Know it's not major stuff, but can anybody help. Read more
Probably has the same faults as a Mondeo.A problem with the door latch/actuator and a defective washer pump.Usually you can hear the pump rotating but does not produce any pressure caused by the plastic impellor being worn.Interesting to know how much a pump costs ,a Mondeo unit is £50.hth
Hi,

To quote from the handbook.
Exhaust emission warning light.
Control indicator lights up when ignition is switched on. Goes out shortly after engine starts.
If it lights up when the engine is running:-
Fault in emission control system. The permitted emission limits may be exceeded. Consult a workshop. We recommend your Vauxhall Approved Repairer.
If it flashes when the engine is running:-
For fault that can lead to destruction of the cataly tic converter, see page 170. Consult a work shop immediately. We recommend that you consult your Vauxhall Approved Repairer.
Either way, it needs hooking up to a fault code diagnostic reader to establish what has put it on.
Peugeot 306 D-Turbo 1997 phase 2.
Hi there,
I'm looking at ways of getting a bit more power out of my car without altering the turbo.
I have already fitted a K & N air filter which has made no noticeable difference, although fuel consumption has improved.
My question is...........How much benefit could I expect to gain by fitting an induction kit.
Kind regards,
Gary. Read more
Thanks for the advice everyone.
I think I'll leave it as it is.
I bought this car 3 weeks ago. When the mornings started to get cold a couple of weeks ago, I noticed that the engine was loud on cold starts. Also, the gear change was a bit metallic and clunky. There was also a noise as it went round corners, which I thougtht was the radiator rattling. Now I know why...
The oil warning light flickered on this morning when I had driven 400m from home. I drove back home 400m and checked the oil. The first time the dip stick came out, there was plenty of oil. The next time the dipstick was very low.
So, I started up (!) and drove 800m to the local garage. The light flicked on briefly during the journey. I put 2 litres of 15/40 oil in. The car then started up and drove without problems. A lot quieter, with smoother gear change. Maybe less power when you get to max revs. in 5th. Maybesome vibration when pulling away at low revs in 2nd. But I don't know if I am imagining this.
Have I got away without permanent damage? I suppose only time will tell...
Incidentally, when I bought the car, I measured the oil using the measure-wipe-measure dipstick technique and there was plenty of oil in the car. My older 95 Micra never needed any oil top ups whatsoever.
There is no apparent oil leak. So I will have to keep checking the level regularily.
Fingers crossed.

The Haynes manual says the oil capacity is 3.5litres, including the oil filter. So it looks like I overfilled it.
Anyway, I got an oil + filter change at Kwik-Fit at the weekend, so the level is now OK.
However, I reckon there is some damage done. The car drives OK about town. But over 50mph, there is an ominous vibration from below the driver seat.

On a short trip back from daughters swimming lesson managed to see 3 cars with no lights on. Journey was no more than a couple of miles, and normally would cycle it, but was a joint trip to drop eldest at the pool and get a part for my pushbike to get it back on the road.
First car actually came flying out of a side road with no lights and nearly drove into us, only saw him at last moment as was dark colour car and blended into the background. Was surprised by second one as quickly switched my lights off and on a couple of times as we crossed paths so other driver did switch his on.
Third one was leaving a retail park, again lights did come on eventually but must have driven about 1/4 mile before realising.
Although not uncommon now, I was a bit stunned to see 3 in one short trip. Read more
I can see where you are coming from .........
In that case FotheringtonThomas doesn't need his lights on. ;-)
Changed your approach to cars and everything motoring related?
Almost 2 years in my case.
1) I`ve learnt a lot from Technical and as a result am more open to small petrol engines than before - FAP, common rail problems and so on. Screwloose and others providing an education
2) I feel better towards BMW`s and wouldn`t rule out owning one at some point.
3) While some Japanese cars are surely good, the seeming tendency of some owners to praise their own, ignore any threads about faults with it, yet seemingly gloat at faults posted about other marques...
If you post a problem with a particular marque, with all of the associated distress, financial loss and disruption, the last thing you need it someone telling you the marque is rubbish and that you should have bought the same as them.
Why does it matter at all what marque someone has bought, when people are so interesting and at times so vulnerable?
You don`t snort at other peoples shoes going through town do you? So why not more respect for other peoples choice of car? Help and sympathise with the problem. Don`t whip them when they are down.
Those are my thoughts two years on. I`m quite tired of `ready nasty` and wish there were more of a camerarderie.

Well, I can't get on to read this as much as I like [ today is actually my first opportunity for two months! ] but I can say I have read a lot of very informative material on here, quite a bit of which has proved useful.
I think one of the new problems appearing now is the number of foreign registered cars on our roads.
I live near Southampton and Polish cars (as in from Poland, not what i do for a living!) are everywhere. I have flicked the main beam at at least two of them in the last couple of weeks, and caught sight of a foreign plate in the dazzle.
On a different note, cars with xenon lights are very prone to appear dazzling at distance, but are okay once you get closer to them. You seem to get a real blue glare at longer range, which then disappears. (No they aren't just dipping them!)
