05 1.3 Booming noise between 30-50 mph - Marra
The problem I have is a booming noise, heard loudest from the drivers seat. My first suspicions were transmission/wheel bearing as it is not related to engine revs and is unaffected by road surface or tyre pressure. I?ve swapped the wheels front to rear and the noise is still there. There is no vibration felt through the steering.

It occurs from cold and originally occurred at over 60mph. The dealer could find no fault when I first reported it. A few months on and the booming noise has stopped over 60mph, but now occurs between 30-50 mph peaking at just over 40mph.

The noise stops when turning right sharply in this speed range, but returns when on the straight or turning left.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to what the problem might be? Thanks.

Thanks for the advice.

I'll get back to the dealer and try and get it sorted.

Dealer has investigated again and has diagnosed as O/S/R wheel bearing and not the O/S/F.

Good news is that they can now reproduce the problem so it can now be fixed - just a shame it could not be correctly diagnosed while under warranty!

Bad news is that complete hub needs replacing (Part No. MR594142) and costs 168 pounds, plus 100 pounds labour (all incl) - and there are none available in the UK (on back order).

A Rear Hub failing after less than 20,000 miles - certainly not expected, but has anyone else had a similar problem?

Did you report it under warranty, and did the dealer examine the car and hear the noise - albeit they couldn't 'correctly diagnose' it? If so push for it to be a warranty repair. Your appointment for the check should be on their system and show the car's had the problem within the waranty period. If you can't do that, try for a contribution as the mileage is so low, and it can't be much out of warranty.

Hi,

I agree with John s 100%.

If you reported the fault whilst still in warranty, then you should be able to push for this..

When did your warranty expire?
How long ago did you have it in to garage to have it checked?

If you push hard enough, i'm sure you will get warranty to cover all costs.. Or at least the cost of the part, which would save you a great deal of money.

Speak to the service manager if required and tell him your not a happy man.

Hi,

Thanks for your comments. The warranty expired end March so I don't hold out much hope for even a goodwill contribution.

When the garage investigated while under warranty, they heard the noise but wrongly diagnosed it as coming from the front bearings. I was informed that as there was no play in the bearings, their replacement was not covered under warranty.

Even now there is no play in the O/S/R bearing - MOT passed OK - but it is still very noisy!

I'm just pleased that the problem has eventually been pinpointed to one part failing and that at last I will be able to get it fixed.

M

Keep arguing your case - a bearing does not need to have play to have failed - if the surface of one roller has spalled and failed, you may end up with a noisy bearing that could lock up solid at any time, but would have no discernible play.

Completely agree with NC. Note too that they have now seen fit to replace it, despite the fact it doesn't show any play. If it's not faulty, why did they take your money for this?

You'll be wasting your time pursuing Mitsubishi over this - they make VW look helpful.
