Has anybody suffered the failure of the tailgate struts and if so have they been replaced under warranty?
My car is now just over 4 years old (75000 miles) and it would seem that the bill to replace the two tailgate struts is approximately £450.
The classic symptom for this failure is that when you open the tailgate electrically it will not hold in place and closes again. If you open the boot by hand although some times it will stay up, on occasions it will drop down and close. This only occurs in cold weather at present????

Another thing showing sign of wear is the steering ? there seem to be some sort of take up in the steering column that can be felt on the steering wheel as the revs pick up from idle when pulling away.

Hi Ibiza,

I have exactly the same problem with some take up in the steering column on my 05 2.2 diesel. I asked the garage to look at it during the 75k service, and although the service manager could feel what I meant, they didn't find anything wrong.

Theory is that it's engine mounts - it's far more noticeable when the engine bay is warm, perhaps them softening up?

Hi, I'm new to this site, but own a 99 Mondeo and have had a similar problem myself. The best way of resolving issues with Mondeo Central Locking is firstly to determine wether it's the remote or the Central Locking unit. Basically check the battery in the remote and replace if necessary. If the remote battery is good and the system partly works then the cure that I use is to simply disconnect the battery and leave it for 30 seconds or so and then reconnect it. If you have a KEYCODE radio, then this will lose it's code, so ensure you have the correct code. If you dont have the code then the best way is to disconnect the Central Locking control unit which is located behind the drivers side lower dash liner. It has 2 multi-way plugs which can be a little difficult to remove until you locate the release catch moulded into the plug. Disconnect it and leave it for 30 seconds (which allows the circuit power to discharge) reconnect and all will be restored to factory settings. The factory settings are as follows; Press lock button once to single lock the doors, press again to double lock and turn on the alarm/immobiliser. Press unlock once to unlock the drivers door only & turn off the immobiliser, press again to unlock the remaining doors. There is a way to make the unit unlock all the doors with a single press, but I have never been able to make this work.

Hope this helps all who suffer from this problem.

I know the Petrol/Diesel debate is ongoing but I see and hear conflicting advice which is best for short runs. As per the title, if the choice was between, say, a Jazz CVT and perhaps a Berlingo/Partner Escapade 1.6Hdi, what would you say? More concerned about maintenance issues rather than straight mpg on the short runs. Thanks. Read more

Glow plugs?
On 106 last 6-7 years. I buy cheapies at £8 each and only replace those needed. On a 106 it's a piece of cake.

No problems at all on Yaris except disc corrosion - to be expected. Prior owner lived in Southport so salt spray?

I bought a 3 year old 25k miles Yaris diesel for £6500 two years ago.

I was looking at the Subaru web site recently and noticed an advert for the Forester 2 turbo. It does not say how much you can get off but if you visit your dealer they are offering thousands off as a discount.
Clearly the C02 figures put it into orbit in terms of VED but it may be worth a look if the discount is big enough to offset this.
My question is, before I go to the dealer has anyone got any idea what thousands off would actually mean.
I am assured by my MP that a statement on the retrospective tax rip off may be re-visited in the pre-budget statement. This government have obviously messed up badly and need to do something to help people and so the VED increase may not be that bad after all - but of course any further statement could still be too late for buying a car now. >>I would have though a new Impreza hatchback turbo would be a better buy for similar discounted money<<

6 and half-a-dozen in my mind. I don't think the Impreza can be had at these prices (yet!), and IMO is one of the blandest looking things on the road. Since Toyota grabbed a bigger chunk of Subaru, the latest designs are like grey blancmange (see Forester 3, and latest Impreza).

Thanks for the dice, DD ;-)

Another point I just found out - the interior cloth is water repellant (no, I'm not incontinent) - dumped a bunch of soaking clothes and a golf bag on the back seat and the water beaded up until I could get the kitcehn roll to it - a throwback to the old 'farmers friend' Subs.

Sounds like a link rod has fallen off. Time to remove the door panel and trim to gain access. Regards Peter

Looking for advice please £1500.00 Catalyst failure at 26,000 miles. Under extended warranty, and 6 months and 1500 miles ago Lambda Sensors failed and Porsche GB replaced under warranty. Serviced and MOT by Porsche only 400 miles later . Now Catalyst failed and replaced along with £350.00 Lambda sensors though they had only done 1500 miles. They say if Cat had been found damaged 1500 miles ago they would have considered replacing under warranty as collateral damage. They say "how do we know how the car has been driven, and if you have put in dirty petrol." (Always used high octane shell from same large petrol station )

Formal final letter on the matter says " Lambda Sensors are NOT known to cause a Catalyst to fail, however a defective Catalyst can cause a false indication of Lambda Sensor failure, and this is compounded by the fact that replaced Lambda Sensors
have to adjust ( in this case 1500 miles ) to a particular engines operating characteristics
and that is why it took 1500 miles before the engine warning light came on again"

Can any of this be possibly true, because on a google search its 100% that failed Lambda
sensors can destroy a Catalyst, and 1500 miles for new lambda sensors to adjust seems beyond belief..Thanks for any technical help and advice Read more

It has 2 sensors before the Cat ( just one cat) and 2 after, Regret I dont know
which 2 were changed but I do understand they were the same 2 as they changed
6 mths ago. I would have hoped that items replaced under warranty that are supposed to have a minimum life of 50,000 miles (and often up to double that and more) should not have to be paid for after 6 mths and 1500 miles and if accepted as a warranty claim then would still be covered, thanks again for the advice

Hi I have a ford focus 1.8 TDCi with bluetooth and voice control on a second generation Sony CD. Everything used to work great without problems but now I have no bluetooth or voice control. I've found a couple of post on the net relating to 2006 ford focus which suggest taking out fuses 58 and 83 to solve the issue however my car does not have these fuses. My fuses go from 1 - 36 and 100 - 143.

Can anyone give any advice on how to fix this problem for my car or what fuses 58 and 83 relate to in a 2006 car so that I can check for the relevant fuses.

Thank you for any help or advice. Read more

In a current thread i notice one or two drivers use the transmission lock on their auto's without applying the handbrake, swmbo does the same with our pick up, but only on our flat parking area.

Just pondering about the lack of use of things, and i thought of those cars that have separate handbrakes with shoes, usually inside the rear discs, MB's and BM's and Volvo's notably but there are others too.

Do those with such systems apply the handbrake gently now and again whilst moving to clean the rust and muck build up off the drum, or does the constant use of the handbrake stop the build up enough?

I'm thinking of how quickly the clutch can rust solid on a car stood for even a few weeks, sometimes resulting in removal to free off.

I always use the handbrake as well as park - force of habit really and I regularly hold it on slightly to keep drums clean - this comes about from previous Mazda 626 which had handbrake as part of calipers and they had a habit of seizing up - Mate never uses his just sticks it in park.

Looking at the high prices some of the motors go for I can't see the advantage for the buyer. You can waste your time going round to view the item only to find later you are up against 15 bidders some of whom get into an auction frenzy and can't pull out of the bidding. What do others think? I did buy a car from ebay once, a couple of years back, for my mother. A four year old Hyundai Getz, FSH with 20,000 on the clock, for £1800. The car was only 3 miles away and I'd already gone to see the car and offered £2000 for it (it was worth about £2500 at the time according to Parker's) which had been refused. Owner wasn't too chuffed, but the car was absolutely fine and is still on my mum's drive with about 35K on the clock now. To the best of my knowledge, nothing has gone wrong on it.

So it can be worthwhile at times, I think that car was a total bargain, especially as the resale values on these have sured up in the meantime and the car is still worth about £1500.
