My local free newspaper, The High Peak Courier, has an article about the Chevrolet K.I.T.T.Y, (Key Innovation That Talks To You), ? a handbag-sized remote controlled alert which enables the car to shout a personalised message to its forgetful owner making it easier to locate their misplaced vehicle.?
It appears that one in five motorists lose their car at least once a fortnight, one in four drivers thinking of reporting their car stolen.

Has anyone else come across this ? It is 25th Dec, not 1st April.

The big stores estimate that it costs them £648 million in lost sales as people search for their cars instead of buying !

When I was working for the Old Bill we had a distraught woman on the phone who had taken home someone else's Ford Escort - same colour, etc - because the key had fitted.
IIRC it was an interesting problem because she couldn't return it for legality and insurance reasons and the control room had to wait for it to be reported stolen because it was deemed not worth going and knocking on the registered keeper's door because they wouldn't have got home...

What did you get this year? Have you been good boys and girls?

I got a hands-free kit - don't know whether to keep it though as I usually just use the speakerphone function.

I'm also getting a set of car mats tomorrow.

Merry Christmas to you all!

Waino

Waino's present sounds pretty top. You can't beat Minder - all filmed around White City

Shepherds Bush and Hammersmith with Arfur's car lot sited in Brook Green. I used to walk past it every day but they've built houses on it now.>>

I've started working my way through and have just watched the third episode. I was looking forward to the wonderful writing, the humour, the dialogue but, of course, with the intervening years, I wasn't prepared for the great nostalgia trip ........ no political correctness, no mobile phones (Arthur would have been the first to have one!), all the Ford Capris and the dodgy copper in a Morris Marina ;-)

My 'side of the bargain' is that I am taking SWMBO to the ballet .....

An M3 touring AND a caravan! That's a bit like have foie gras with a side serving of mushy peas! I think he should ring NHS direct (0845 4647) and seek urgent counselling! Not serious - just bored - I am 1/3 rd of the way thru a 16 hour shift in my local horsepiddle!

My regular car is a 2001 Mitsubishi Shogun Pinin - the baby Shogun, which works very well in London, being short , high , tough and automatic .

there has been a rust blister developing for some time on the door , tight on where the window frame starts , it is about 50 mm diameter and growing . My question is : the car had a 6 year anti perforation warantee . I have not serviced it during my 4 years of ownership at the main dealers, instead using a reliable independent who has stamped the book each year , including the fan belt change - the car has just reached 60 k miles .

It is now more than 6 years old , but anybody looking at it can see the rust has not appeared overnight .

My question is this : any point in claiming against Mitsubishi UK - any prededents ? Read more

midlife - what crisis?

I think the standard HJ reply in his colums has always been "not a hope", since the vehicle has never been presented to the main dealer, who has therefore never had an opportunity of checking and catching the problem at an earlier stage, thus minimising the size of any claim. While this may seem nonsense given the size of the problem you mention, I suspect that would be the response. Still, no harm in asking, particularly if you are thinking of buying another from the dealer.

I have had a Tomtom 1 for over a year and have found it really accurate. It let me down big style last night though. I had to drive to Bristol International Airport and I didn't have a post code for it. However I found it listed as a location on the TomTom's address file and duly set it. When I "arrived at my destination" I saw no evidence of an airport - and I hadn't seen any direction signs to the airport for some miles. To cut a long story short when I eventually arrived at the airport, out of curiousity, I asked the unit for a route to BIA and it said it was 13 miles and 30 minutes away!
As the unit is otherwise working perfectly I can only assume its a glitch in its map data but very annoying. Are these errors common or, as I suspect, am I just unlucky? Trouble is if, as I was you are travelling alone, you can't map read as a check so you do tend to trust the unit! Read more

Is Madeira mapped by any chance and if so to what level?

This evening someone parked totally on the pavement on a blind bend in our road.
The good news is that later the traffic lads arrived and parked in the road behind it.
A few minutes ago a flat bed truck arrived to remove it ( close to 22:00hrs.)
Just proves that the traffic boys are at work tonight and IMO doing a good job.

It was a very very strange way to park. Our road is a quiet crescent with all houses having a driveway and often parking for 2/3 cars. There is plenty of space to park in the road in that vicinity.

It may just be coincidence but the chopper was hovering close to the area for about 30 mins just before dark and it is also very rare to see a traffic car in our road.
It maybe that it had been reported because it was almost blocking the pavement though very few pedestrians would be passing it.

An expensive start to Christmas for someone ! Read more

As a GP who has had to look after the families of policemen, it would be rare for them to extend such a courtesy to their wives.

My first post was 13th December 2000 - just over 7 years. Who else is still here from those days? There used to be an Andrew Bairsto - is he the same as Andy Bairsto?

And what happened to John Slaughter? He was the Aprilia/Number Cruncher of the day. Read more

Been reading since the beginning, but only started to post very recently. ( Nov 07 ) Sort of habit forming isn't it ? Thoroughly enjoy it most of the time even if some contributors do get a bit grumpy occassionally. Have already learned that you have to be crystal clear what you mean or someone will misinterpret it ! Have learned much useful stuff from here. Thanks all !

......if it did, they'd all be like this!

On account of Liverpool Street Stn being shut, wife volunteered me to drive her from Redbridge into the City of London (a distance of some 12 miles) My goodness , it took me just 20 minutes!

We left chez nous at 7:15am, every traffic light was green for me, every lane was clear for me, all of the idiots were still in their beds, no one to obstruct me in my mission to deliver SWMBO to a point 1/2 a metre from the beginning of the C Zone at Old Street Roundabout (Hey, I love her....but not enough to fork out for that. She had to get on Shanks' Pony for the rest of the route)

If only every day was Christmas Eve'. Read more
