My Fiesta Mk4 has started to lack power and hesitates on acceleration. I've changed the spark plugs & fuel filter. I've also checked the air filter which is a K&N and just been cleaned.
When ticking over at 950rpm it feels lumpy and when trying to accelerate is holding back the power.
No blows from any of the exhaust areas but the note of the rear silencer is different.

Two points, Historical interest (Not Sat Nav)
1) Ever navigated by the Sun?
2) Ever used a compass? corrected (perhaps) to true North in relation to a road map or car journey/City map?
Regarding the Sun,
Back in the early 70`s entered Glasgow (for the first time) and entered a grid pattern of streets, no road signs and rough looking men on corners burning fires on the pavements .
That was returning from the Highlands via Loch Lomond and attempting to go South.
Got out by referencing the sun in the south west and keeping it to the front of the drivers side window.
Many years later, remembered this in Barcelona and drove out without a map or using road signs.
Second point, The Compass,
Compass, corrected to true (Polar) North, instead of Canadian Magnetic? Out of the car has anyone referenced such as a navigation aid regarding road maps or on foot in an unfamiliar City?
The Stars?
I got a fix on Polaris the other night, but talk about `faint` a non starter unless in Siberia perhaps?
Post is about what `can` be done, if somewhere very unfamiliar, perhaps abroad without modern technology, regarding navigation.

After all even The Gorbals at midnight is less intimidating than a Force 8 or
10m vis in the middle of the channel.
You have obviously never been to the gorbals on a saturday night after a big firm game.

Thanks very much
No resistance, is it possible to take the inside panel off to check with door closed.
Or any other way of opening?

I wonder if anyone can help me with this - it's a long standing problem, the brake light warning light is on all the time although occasionally for no apparent reason it goes off for a few seconds and then comes on again even though the brake lights work normally. I have changed the brake light bulbs and cleaned all the contacts and all the LCD bulbs in the window light are working too. Any suggestions much appreciated. Read more
Thanks very much for that - no, I'm pretty certain I don't have that system. I'll change the bulbs with some from the dealer.
Hi
Can anyone help with my problem please:
My 306 was stalling when I pulled up at junctions ect and I found that my idle valve was completely closed. After browsing on the net I found that this was a common problem. I could get the car working ok by physically slowly pushing the plunger slightly into the valves body (if I went to far the engine revved too high at idle. It seemed to me like the valve was not being told to move by the ECU (or it was sticking) so I bought another one. The one I bought had the same main number as mine (B32/00) but a different "A" number underneath. I was told that the B32/00 is the important one, and the other number was not as important. When I measured the resistance of the two coils, in the new one they were about 48 ohms, whereas the old one was about 52 ohms. When I changed the motor the same problem occurred, i.e if it was set to idle low, the ECU didnt correct it. It did however show some small changes in rev speed but then after about 20 seconds it just stalled. I'm now not sure if the new valve is not quite the right one, or if the problme is not the valve, but the ECU that is not driving it properly. A few more clues - Before this idling problem developed I had an intermittant jerking (and ECU light flashing on briefly) when cruising on a motorway. On a particularly long motorway journey this happened quite a lot and when we came off the Mway the stalling problem started.
From the little I know about these systems I assume that when I put the new valve in, its actual position at that point should not have mattered because the engine would initially idle at the speed determined by the position of the valve, and then the ECU would detect that the idle RPM doesn't match the programmed value and and, after a short period, it should send drive signals to the valve to correct it (which doesn't appear to be happening)
Could a Peugot expert please tell me if, from all of the above, its likely I have a sensor problem (if so which ??) , an ECU problem or if it is still likley to be the stepper motor (and the new one is actually the wrong one). I also read that disconnecting the battery to rest the ECU may help and I will try this shortly - I'm just not confidant it will help - if it does I'll report back within the hour (its now 10.15am 27/12)
Thanks for any help with this

It would help to know the engine size and year?
Lats night (christmas night) while returning elderly relatives to their homes we came up behind a vehicle with its brake lights on,but traveling at 20 - 25 MPH.It was not clear at first what was happening, when I sused the situation and overtook the vehicle it was being towed by a vehicle without lights reving like mad, presumably to overcome the friction of the towed vehicles brakes. The tow rope was indeed a tow rope that looked like bailing twine. No sign on the towed vehicle at all to indicate it was being towed.

Sounds completely daft to me. Why no lights on the towing vehicle? Why no lights on the towed vehicle? If the latters's lights didn't work but the brake lights did, why not just bypass the switch, instead of trying to drive with the brakes on? Why use a flimsy tow rope, and then try and break it by putting the brakes on?
My rover 400 1.4i is in {deleted - DD} service over one week.one night i broke down on M6,the engine stoped as it not getting fuel. After that i could start the engine,it was running for 3-5 seconds, sometimes more, and than it stoped. In the service they still do not know what is the problem. Any sugesstions? or i just should take the car to another garage? please help i dont know what to do?

As I thought; they're working on "guess and test." When they guess wrong, they're stumped.
If they believe it's a fuel-pressure problem; then the first test is the line pressure.... [Except they probably can't - as they don't have a gauge kit!]
If their computer[?] doesn't see anything wrong; then they have to use their brains. When it cuts out, then something changes; spark, fuel, or airflow. [Have they even considered things like a blocked cat?]
I've got a 1993 cavalier with the 1.7 td isuzu engine. Whenever I change the oil I make a right mess when undoing the oil filter - it's nearly horizontal and in an awkward place at the back of the engine. Any tips on how to change the filter without soaking the starter motor with oil? TIA Read more
As suggested, I use a plastic bag (sandwich bag or similar) around filter body as it is unscrewed which I quickly tip filter back into just as it comes off the last thread. Lift up by edges of bag to retain most of the oil.
On Christmas day of all days. Good will to all men and all that.
M8 Glasgow going east bound just by the Glasgow royal cut off. Witnessed the most dangerous/stupid driving I have ever seen in my 20 odd years of driving. A white taxi and a blue ford focus are in the outside lane. From what I seen the taxi was not pulling in quick enough for the focus. So when the taxi driver pulled into the middle lane the other driver decided to pull up beside the taxi and give the 1 or it may have been the 2 fingered salute. The next thing the two of them have there windows down and start shouting at each other. In the process the two of them have slowed down to 30 to 40 mph and forcing myself and other drivers to brake sharply. As I felt that this was an extremely dangerous situation and I did not want to be involved in any pile up due to these idiots. I indicated over to the inside lane and accelerated by them (still shouting at each other). At least another half a dozen cars had to do the same manoeuvre.
If this had been any other day I am sure there would have been a pile up. No doubt these two idiots would have carried on there journey unaware of the carnage that they may have left behind them. Read more
