Hi I have decided that I would like to give up my high maintainence 4X4 for an economical car. I dont have any experience in buying cars . I need a car that wont cost too much money to maintain or to fuel up . Can anyone recommend a car? I am only going to be able to afford hundreds rather than thousands ... for the time being . Car - Mitsubishi Grandis 2.4 Auto 2005, running on Warrior Alloy wheels - another question.
Love the car in many ways, but have never been happy about the brakes, they just don't feel powerful enough for the size and weight of car. At times especially in wet I feel they could not be depended on if needed in an emergency.
Can they be upgraded? bigger disks? bigger pads? more powerful servo assist? what is involved? are there any risks, and can anyone suggest where I can take it in the West Herts area, (St Albans, Watford, Hemel, Hatfield etc)

My first suggestion is to take the car out on an empty road, then stamp on the brakes HARD - REALLY HARD - from say 50 or 60 mph all the way down to 0.
Reason is that your car may have brake assist, and you may well be shocked by how well the thing brakes when this kicks in.
Hi all,
Just changed car, new (to us) one has a nice sony radio/cassette head unit fitted, but the previous owner had removed the autochanger prior to trading to the dealer we got it from. Cables are still in place- looking squarely at a certain auction site... Trouble is- how do I find out which changers are compatible with our head unit? Any ideas??
TIA,
Alex.

>>>>>It would be tricky to contact the previous owner, as he traded the car to the dealer we got it from. I suppose I could ask them, but it would be a pain!
Why is this tricky?
He is the previous keeper so you will have his name and address on the V5
Hi can anyone help? I have a 7 seater jeep that needs servicing but is still a good runner. My problem is that I can't afford to maintain it. Ideally I would like to get a car that's 1.5 .
I am a single parent that's struggling on a low income so I can't afford to buy a car . Now what options are available to me?
Some one mentioned part exchange as an option???
I am in the Surrey area. I have to have use of a car as that's the only stressfree way I can drop my kids to school. I have no one to turn to for help. I hope someone out there can advise me on the best cause of action. I have tried to freecycle swap but to no avail. How much would I be looking at buying a car that will take me from A to B thats if I can sell the jeep.
What is the best car to buy for someone in my position? I will be really grateful for any help or advise that can be given .

Cavalier mk3 '88-'95 fits the bill in my book.
Late but great entry the new Audi R8 advert. A visually stunning car. Clearly a technical marvel and what do we get?
A silly trilling little cod Irish ditty and we don't get to see the whole car until a few seconds from the end.
The song 'wait' and an R8. Genius....

I dont know about he advert but I saw ( and heard ) one today - just wow!
Ultra desirable in the extreme.
Car Details:
2005 Mitsubishi Grandis Warrior, 2.4 Petrol Automatic - 7 seater MPV
Running on Alloys and Low Profile tryes as supplied and set up by Mitsubishi UK
Tyres are Continental Sport Contact 2, size and rating is 235/45/ZR18, 98W, "Extra Load"
Car weaves around terribly, even at slow speeds (e.g. 20mph) often makes you feel you are not in control of steering, need to be frequently correcting it from a swerve, even when driving in straight lines.
On some roads it "tramlines" badly
Does the same wether fully loaded or not.
Was so worried today (before a 90 mile journey with all family and heavily loaded), I pulled over at a reputable car servicing garage known to my family, and the chap got it up on the ramp and made a visual inspection without appointment, checked the nothing was loose, broken or about to fall off, checked the tyres, and bushes, and wheel nuts and told me he could see nothing wrong. He couldn't check the tracking cos his tracking computer didn't have data on the Grandis.
Will get it in to Mitsubishi early January, but would appreciate comment from the forum members first.

Your set up sounds quite normal to me, and its very rare to have the nokian treads all the same way (sort of lopsided).
Don't blame you for wanting some peace of mind though, i would too.
By the way i'm glad the mitsi behaves better now.
I have a 2004 Mazda6 Diesel estate which I bought about a year ago. In the summer I noticed that the passenger windows tended to stick and were difficult to open. I assumed this was due to lack of use as they were not often used. I have been careful not to continue to hold the switch if the window is stuck. Following the last service (coincidently?) I have found that none of the passenger windows will open at all. There is also no sound from the motors. I have tried to change the 30 amp fuse but I'm not sure whether it's blown. Does anyone know how to get these fuses out? Read more
I'm almost too embarrassed to admit it. I must have hit the cut off button be mistake. I don't use the power lock and didn't even know it was there. Our kids have grown up an left us long ago. All windows now functioning but still a bit sticky. Thanks everyone for your help.
I recently bought a 9 month old Focus (a 56-reg) from a non-Ford dealership and have now discovered that one of the rear speakers is faulty. As there was no warranty booklet provided with the car I am unsure if this sort of thing would be covered by the manufacturer's warranty - can anyone help? Read more
Speaker went duff in my Saab after two years - Saab replaced it under warranty with no questions asked whatsoever. I asked if I could have replaced the speaker myself, their response was - the new cabling (multiplex) systems make the old fashioned speakers redundant. Certainly, searching other forums, I discovered that on a Saab you can't easily replace a head unit without rewiring the entire car!
Not sure if Ford will apply the same technology, but since the Saab is basically a bog standard GM Vectra................
Got into a discussion at work today.
There are an ever increasing amount of cctv cameras appearing in our town centres today, mainly taking the form of little black domes on top of heavily fortified poles. Does anyone know if their purpose is purely to combat "aggro" outside pubs and clubs, or do some police forces also use them as a weapon to spy on the motorist..ie; illegal parking, running traffic lights, number plate checking etc. Read more
2 Im glad that I escaped from London FPN free after my christmas visit too
many cameras red light box junction. parking bus lane all with no discretion.
Maybe I spoke too soon, I hope there isnt a FPN in the post, and I forgot speed cameras.
Having lost the security code for the original radio, we decided to replace it with a 'better' radio. It appears that, as far as the radio is concerned, there are 3 associated wires - the ground, the constant live and a 'switched' live that comes on with the ignition switch. It appears that we have a fault with the ignition switch which gives us a poor/intermittent contact.
Rather than fiddle about with the ignition switch, can anyone advise if the radio can be powered by bridging the wires so that the switchable power is also on constant? Is the stereo likely to drain the battery in standby? Are there any pitfalls/precautions?
Many thanks Waino Read more
There is no hi-tech electronics on these so it should not be a problem. It is possible to take an ignition supply from the cigar lighter (if fitted) or brake light switch .Btw the fault with the ignition switch aux circuit is fairly common on these early Corsa models and is usually not the switch that us faulty but a worn plunger pin on the rear of the ignition switch barrel.hth
