It's becoming a bit of a joke now on the motorway to see the number of cars with completely blacked out numberplates from dirt. Are there no police to enforce this, or do they not care? I notice that Golfs seems to be particularly vulnerable. Read more
Bike racks - my pet hate. Joe Bloggs thinks he's wonderful loading up his Mondeo or Lagunga with the 4 bikes on the back - totally obvlivious to the fact that his rear lights are completely obscured (and his interior mirror). I blame the suppliers of these racks for not making buyers sign a note saying that they have read the regulations requiring them (a) to fit trailer boards, and (b) to remove the racks when not in use (covered by dangerous projection sof the Construction & Use regs).
But isn't it fun when they put the bikes on the roof, go into one of the beach (or multi-storey) car parks not noticing that there's a height limitation. What fun it is watching the bikes getting sheared off, broken and bent!!!!
But on anoher tack - what if you saw a car with blackened (dirty) number plates and got out your little plant sprayer that you keep in the car for when your washer nozzles freeze up, and gave his plates a little wash. Would you be breaking the law?
Hi BR's
Just a friendly word of warning for motorists over the next few months while weather/road conditions is poor.
Driving to work this morning on a road I always go down 60mph country road and going into a shallow right hander at the speed limit and for no reason the back broke loose and car slid into a 45 degree angle with front end on other side. I managed to get the front round by dabbing brake and steering into skid but i'm a very lucky person today. I doesnt bear thinking about if another car was coming my way. The road appeared dry with soft verges at edge of road, it is possible the my rear tire caught one of these verges and caused the skid.
Well damage none really apart from some stubborn tree branch marks on A pillar and mirror where branches clattered car and the obvious seat cleaning needed. I was still shocked and shaking 2/3 miles up road when I got out to look at car but like I said some one was watching over me.
Take it easy this Xmas and slow down, I have had my warning

On behalf of all bikers thank you for that. It's a pity some other car
drivers aren't so understanding.
Too right.
Hi, friend of mine has a converted Camper van, I think its over 10 years old and its a derv and auto box. Two questions, he is in North Surrey, any suggestions on a good local derv specialist? Ford seem to struggle with the car, he often has to take it to the bigger dealership a few miles away where they can "plug it in".
The actual problem is when going over 60 or going up a steep hill and giving it the beans, the EML comes on, then it goes into limp home mode. He pulls over, switches off and on then continues fine. Wonder if anyone has any ideas????
Cheers.

I don't want to get involved in diagnosing the fault, i don't have anymore details I just want to offer my friend the details of a good derv specialist. I think it is Lucas based. Can anyone suggest a good place in North Surrey/SW London???
I have a 51 plate VW Golf GT TDI (115 bhp) and the instrument display is not fully working: The Rev counter is fine - but the speedo all of a sudden doesn't work, the fuel gauge goes to zero on corners, the temp gauge is intermittent. I have noticed a small bladed 10amp fuse keeps tripping on the fuse panel. Slot #7 on the little diagram. Any one got any idea whether the display and the fuse are linked and what could be causing this? Thanks Read more
I've a feeling that the wiring chafes down by the gearbox rev-lights switch. Worth a look.
Get that code read and don't change anything until you've come back with it.
Not sure if the mods will like this thread but..............
Well I have not been posting long but at the end of the year I wanted to wish everyone a very merry christmas and all the best for the new year.
I find this site brilliant and that is cos of everyone posting on it.
I have learned alot - there are some very clever people out there & I have been put right a couple (or more) times - I have not always agreed with everyone and vice versa but that has what made it interesting and fun.
If I have upset anyone - I'm sorry it was never intended - I like a bit of banter both ways and sometimes it does not read that way - so apologies.
Have a great Christmas where ever you are and what ever your driving. Read more
Merry Christmas to one and all, thanks to the mods for another well managed year!

Looking for advice on immobiliser keypad on a Citroen ZX Elation deisel 1997 model
I have no instructions books or anything with the car to refer to.
I am having problems with the keypad immobiliser, when I type in the code the green light comes on ,but the red light also stays on and the car won't start so assume it is still 'immobilised'. Yesterday when i tried to start it this happened, both lights stayed on and when I actually turned the key to start it after putting the code in,it started bleeping.
Anyone any ideas,please

Hi,managed to get advice re this on another forum. The following method worked me,thank goodness.Shall leave it in case anyone else has the same problem
Disconnect battery, switch ignition on,reconnect battery. Wait about 1 minute, switch ignition off and then try to start car in normal way.
As I said this worked for us it may help others.
Not accidental build faults as such, but what *seemed* like a present, just for you, the new car owner, *seemingly* done on purpose, by an individual on the line.

for
gangsters and their molls ;-)
No doubt some were bb, but surely they just used to go round to some hapless car dealer they had over a barrel and 'borrow' what they needed for as long as they needed it, like the Krays? Must be great being a gangster if you are nasty enough.
I can see halfshafts down your trousers bb, but what sort of snap box would you have to have to take a Vauxhall Cresta crankcase out without being noticed? 'He loves his snap, the foreman.'

I have a question concerning a Ford Focus 1.8 ZETEC E which has done 71 000 miles.
The problem is that when the engine is cold and I am in neutral and I rev the engine up to say 2000 rpm and listen as the revs come down, at about 1250 rpm there is a hissing type sound which is not there at any other rpm. I can hear the noise as well in all gears when driving but only when the revs come down to about 1250 rpm.Strangely when the engine is hot and the car is idling in neutral, there is no noise when at 1250 rpm.I have taken the car to a ford garage for an opinion and they seem to think that it is an emission system hose that is damaged or leaking. I am worried because on my recent service, the garage overfilled the engine oil by 250 - 500 ml (which has now been corrected), but could this noise be connected with this ?. When I posted this question before someone thought that it might be a Shield bearing at the bottom end of the pistons. If it was something serious wouldn't the performance be affected?. Can anyone help ?

could be a slight exhaust leak at a joint which seals with heat. Try by feeling for gas escape - when engine is cold.. but take care.

The boot of my 06 clio 1.5 cDi has started opening as I drive along the road. I have eliminated a problem with the key by switching to the spare key, the problem persists. Any ideas, anyone?
For a couple of days previously, when I unlocked the doors with the plipper, the boot also unlocked, not sure if this is relevant.

It's possible that your car [year and engine type unknown] simply sucked in some air when the tank was low and the fuel pressure fell low enough to flag a fault-code and that generic fuelling fault warning.
It may well clear itself after a few starts; but, if not, get your local garage to plug it in and read the code.
