2001 GT TDi - Instrument Display Fault - loosenut
I have a 51 plate VW Golf GT TDI (115 bhp) and the instrument display is not fully working: The Rev counter is fine - but the speedo all of a sudden doesn't work, the fuel gauge goes to zero on corners, the temp gauge is intermittent. I have noticed a small bladed 10amp fuse keeps tripping on the fuse panel. Slot #7 on the little diagram. Any one got any idea whether the display and the fuse are linked and what could be causing this? Thanks

loosenut [Are we distantly related?]

According to my data; fuse 7 [in the dash-end box?] is for the reversing lamps. [Check the wiring to the gearbox switch and that the correct bulbs are fitted.]

Golf IV dashpods do fail; as they contain the immobilizer, fitting new ones is a dealer only job as the SKC code is not available any more. Repairs by people like BBA are the best route.

Yes the dash end box - i see i shall take a look. I believe the car will need to go to the main dealer anyway as i suspect the wastegate dump valve is faulty and consequently the turbo in effect switches off after roughly 30 mins of motorway driving - loss of power - speeds no greater than 60mph revs low etc.
Thanks for the advice i'll check out the bulbs and go from there.

That sounds like it's going into limp-home mode for some reason - does the engine management light come on? Does cycling the ignition clear it?

There will be a fault-code stored. Get any garage to read it for you and post it here. There is no dump valve; this is a VNT turbo and you'd better pray it's not that.

Oh no! I do hope it is not the turbo! Yes by switching off and on again the car works fine again. Going back to the fuses - i replaced the fuse all instruments worked fine - BUT by putting the car in reverse - tripped the fuse and i was back to square one. I think a trip to the garage is on the cards.

I've a feeling that the wiring chafes down by the gearbox rev-lights switch. Worth a look.

Get that code read and don't change anything until you've come back with it.
