I have a question concerning a Ford Focus 1.8 ZETEC E which has done 71 000 miles.
The problem is that when the engine is cold and I am in neutral and I rev the engine up to say 2000 rpm and listen as the revs come down, at about 1250 rpm there is a hissing type sound which is not there at any other rpm. I can hear the noise as well in all gears when driving but only when the revs come down to about 1250 rpm.Strangely when the engine is hot and the car is idling in neutral, there is no noise when at 1250 rpm.I have taken the car to a ford garage for an opinion and they seem to think that it is an emission system hose that is damaged or leaking. I am worried because on my recent service, the garage overfilled the engine oil by 250 - 500 ml (which has now been corrected), but could this noise be connected with this ?. When I posted this question before someone thought that it might be a Shield bearing at the bottom end of the pistons. If it was something serious wouldn't the performance be affected?. Can anyone help ?

The boot of my 06 clio 1.5 cDi has started opening as I drive along the road. I have eliminated a problem with the key by switching to the spare key, the problem persists. Any ideas, anyone?
For a couple of days previously, when I unlocked the doors with the plipper, the boot also unlocked, not sure if this is relevant.

Hello again and sorry about two threads.
I've seen the C/Captiva on the road and it looked good but never been in one. Read HJ's review aka the new Vauxhall. Never been in the Valhalla SUV either.
Vauxhalls - Had a Caviler about 17 years ago - good build and reliable.
Is the Captiva of good build, etc?
Should I buy used but will be hard to come by as relatively new car. Reason for used is the depreciation. Thank you all again Read more
Motorpoint was selling them a few weeks back -
Top of Range Spec with about £5,000 off list (£20K otr IIRC)
I saw one last week funnily enough but cannot say it appealed to my eye.
Hello, like most men, I buy my presents last minute.
Been looking at a number plate for my wifes Ford Fiesta. 55 plate.
Looked at the DVLA site and noticed K155 MET. Total cost £1299, plus plates.
My question is how do I find out how much K15 MET was sold for in order to compare prices, as I like the plate to be an investment as well. If the aforementioned plated sold for 4000 pounds or less, then I may not buy it.
O know I will not get the registration certificate by Christmas but I can give my wife the plates in the mean time.
All all appreciated, and ideas as well.
BTW, personal number plates is a personal thing and I've always wanted one but could never afford the one I like for myself. Thank you. Read more

Not "Kiss me, Hardy"
but "Kismet, Hardy".

Yes, floormats!!
Having changed earlier this year from an E46 coupe to an E92 coupe, I'd ordered BMW's floormats, having been pleased with the fact that, whilst they are expensive at £75 for the set, they will stand going through a washing machine with no problems.
The mats for the new model, though, are poorer. Thinner, less substantial, and the passenger side has no securing points, so after a few months they are creased and virtually impossible to return to their previous flat state.
My question is : do I have the correct mats, or has my dealer fired in a set of cheapo mats thinking I wouldn't notice? Anyone else have the same problem? Read more
Have now checked back at the dealers. The floormats on the E92 are the only ones available, and very much inferior to E46 ones. At £75 retail, they are shockingly bad value (no surprise I guess from BMW), but really are poor for the money. The passenger footwell one has no means of securing it, and can easily be creased in normal use, and is virtually impossible to 'uncrease'!
Bad show, BMW.
One of the rear discs of my 03/03 Focus has a band of permanent rust (on the outer face) approximately 7 mm wide at the edge of the disc. Is this amount acceptable? The car recently passed an MOT at a Ford dealer without comment.
(The rust is the result of the car having stood idle for a long period before I bought it. I was aware that all the discs were very rusty when I bought it but the rest have cleaned up with normal use. If I've still got the car when new rear pads are required I intend to have new rear discs fitted at the same time in any case as a precaution.) Read more
This is very common on lots of cars, especially FWD cars. When driven lightly loaded the rear brakes are not doing much during normal driving, so the rust becomes established. Normally is will slowly 'creep in' from the outside edge.
In the past I have cleaned these up with emery cloth and then a bit of hard braking (or drive with handbrake on for a short distance - not really ideal, but it does work).
A friendly machine shop might skim the discs for £20, but Ford discs are cheap anyway, so new ones is probably the best option.
i have recently changed my engine in my R reg Fiesta mk 4. i have dropped in a 1.25 zetec s the same as what was in before, the only difference bieng that it has an egr valve which my original engine did not, therefore i need to do something with it. i have been given two opinions as to what to do
1) put a piece of tubing between the two pipes creating a flow around bypassing what im told is a sensor
or
2) Block it off??? how do i do this?
i know its a hard question but dont lots of people disconnect the EGR anyway?
if niether of these two are feasable i could get the manifolds swapped but id rather not.
thanks, carl... Read more
it works, ran fine until i tried to restart as i had a flat battery. was going to replace it with my original one and jump it but when i connected the leads the battery sparked into life and locked my car...
heres the bad bit, not knowing it would do this,,, (i dont know a lot about cars) i left my keys in the car... GREAT... now its blocking neighbours drive and i cant get in... spare keyfob and key were not given when i bought the car and i havent had chance to get a copy...
breaking the small rear window looks tempting,,, ive tried the coathanger but its hard because the door handle goes into the door curvature.
lol oh well
Sorry, delete if you wish Mods, but just choking on the news that although the Japanese said on the news this morning, that they would not kill humpbacks, they would instead kill 1,000 other whales.
Would this put you off a new Japanese car as a protest? Read more

Falkirk Bairn is on the money there - is the fluid dark ie burnt/overheated and BTW has the car got a towing hitch? If it has there are good odds that the box has suffered from some ill considered towing activity!

Yes; in practical terms, clutch/drive failure is about the only thing that ropes can be used for - on any road - nowadays. That's why bars are near-universally used.
could be a slight exhaust leak at a joint which seals with heat. Try by feeling for gas escape - when engine is cold.. but take care.
