My first post was 13th December 2000 - just over 7 years. Who else is still here from those days? There used to be an Andrew Bairsto - is he the same as Andy Bairsto?
And what happened to John Slaughter? He was the Aprilia/Number Cruncher of the day.

May 2002 (although feels a lot longer)
Some 12,000+ posts, and nearly 600 threads created.

12th September 2002 as my previous userID..... It might only be 5 years, but lets see:-
I was driving a Peugeot 306 1.4LX (X365 CNH) at the time.since then Vauxhall Astra Coupe YJ52 LJK, Ford Focus NK02 YLE, Ford Mondeo DG04 VKE, VW Golf GTTDI RY51 LFU, Hyundai Terracan BN04 NNV, Vauxhall Vectra CDTI SRI, before finally VW Golf GTTDI 150 and the Mitsubishi Shogun
I've also lived in Bradford, Huddersfield, Kidderminster, Worcester and Shropshire
And had two kids.
They do say time flies when you are having fun!!!!
Been having a look back over some of my past posts - nothing really changes around here does it???

Ha, I've been here a long time, but not posted much. Mainly because I don't know much!

July 2001 - seems like a lifetime ago. On a similar note I remember writing into HJ's column when it was in it's infancy around 1998/99 and the letter was published. Do I win a prize?
Are the Lacey brothers and David Woollard still around? Perhaps under new IDs?

Ah the Lacey bros. and their infamous Anal Bender.

Early 01.
Seems like a lifetime ago now, the backroom has taught me a great deal and provided worthwhile advice for many a technical problem. The strict moderation policy can be annoying when you fall foul of it, but I think it is the main reason why this place is so good. I belong to a cycling forum where moderation is non-existant and it has been spoilt by turning into an abusive place, full of little cliques and people with little interest in bikes who just want to shout off about whatever political issues float their boat. Disaggreements here are kept in check before they get out of hand and the undesirables are soon shown the door.

How long have I been here? hmm let me see...since about half past ten i think.

10 March 2003 and to be honest, can't remember why I joined in the first place! Most likely a link from a Yahoo search.
I remember once posting a question in Technical, most likely about my Saxo or Scenic. I then did a search on Yahoo to see if I could get the answer there and the first result it came up with was a link to my thread on here!

22 February 2004, according to the records. I'm a Times reader but the Telegraph motoring supplement is far the best and i see this online - so that must be where I found out about the Backroom.
One of my earliest requests for advice was for 'New car for my wife'. Some bright spark responded with something to the effect of 'Sounds like a fair swap'. That's my kind of humour and I've stayed here.
The backroom is at its best when we discuss issues rationally, or try to help a poster choose a car; at its worst when argument gets needlessly personal (well done the moderators for keeping this under control).
And, to the backroom's eternal credit, no-one actually advised me to buy a Mercedes B-class. That was entirely my fault. Never mind - driving is fun again now.

Since late 2000ish - in the old Backroom. In this one since opening day or thereabouts. Interesting looking back to the very early days how many users posted using what appeared to be their own names.
One or two user names stick in the mind - where's Paul Mycatz-Tinks these dayss?

2nd November 2006.
Arrived back then from the Wild West of the usenets Mech forums, a certain mechanics forum and more latterly lost interest in the the Fiat Forum, leaving just participation on this site.
Its the quality of moderation that I have grown to appreciate more and more here.
I don`t know whether anyone is still trying to make sense of uk.rec.maintenance and other sites there when one bloke can cause all that current chaos.
I have become accustomed to the comparative deep pool of tranquillity, which is my perception of the HJ forum.
I was startled therefore to see the Webmasters/Mods recent re-post of the swearing situation, with perhaps a certain tenseness that may give insight.
Perhaps the swear filter is like the under belly of the Space Shuttle re entering the earths atmosphere, with Pugugly and the other mods desperately slipping new tiles into place as others burn through?
Whatever, appreciation. I can`t think of another forum that has such diligent, committed moderators.
Merry Christmas to everyone ;)

Since 1938. Of course we had real moderators then - any fancy stuff and you were made to run three times round the pitch with no boots on.

Nsar, did you come on to the Backroom to say how awful the first VW prototype was?
Sorry, couldn't resist it.....:)

Since 16 September 2002.
...don't post very often, though.

When I first came here there was only one moderator called Martin IIRC and a chap called Bogush who filled the board with drivel. A most pleasant cove called Mr Woollard used to make many wise points and helped to keep things on an even keel. Good old DW still comes here now and then as MM.
There was also a small group known as the "desparados" who took amongst other things a strong anti-censorship stance.
Just after I came here the former moderator Mark (RBLS) joined us but at the time was known as Mark (Brazil) and was just an ordinary poster like us all.
I made my first post on June 2001 shortly after buying a Passat (same weekend in fact) to ask a question about the spec.
Strangely the site software says that I registered in May 2002 which is incorrect and I cannot fathom out why.
I am here most days but the current "unbearable smugness of being" exhibited by some here mean I post less and less.
As always
Mark

Hi all
First post was back in 2002, can't believe it was so long ago. My last post was over two years ago, I guess i have turned into a bit of a lurker.
But hey since I am here I have a question for you all.
My wifes 206 is a complete dog, it is cutting out at roundabouts, and has recently started to smell of a bad catalyst. In addition the c.v. joints are also shot. We now want rid of it.. The question is; what should I do with it? trade it in? send it to auction as is?
I could never sell it privately, my concience would'nt let me.
Suggestions please

It's actually a little difficult to be sure for those from the early days. If we consider the current forum the mk.3 then the mk.1 started on the 17th October 2000 with a question that I seem to remember HJ posted under another name (Peter!) just to get things started.
My earliest post in the archive shows as 27th March 2001 but I remember my first post and that isn't it. I know the archive was "pruned" around 2002 by a now ex-mod so it can't be taken as gospel any more.
Of course in that mk.1 forum there was no registration so you could use a different username for each post... as some seemed to do with great regularity. Funny at times but a bit destructive when impersonation reared its head. There was also no moderation as such, just the guiding hand of Martyn the website manager... a real gent who we drove to distraction at times.
Those early pre-moderation days were very much like a cosy pub with a hard core of about 20 frequent posters, a couple of essential village idiots and then newcomers who wandered in and out at times.
I forget the date exactly but I reckon early/mid 2002 we had the upgrade to mk.2 where registration was required, hence many will see in their profile a date around this time when in fact they were probably posting unregistered in the earlier forum. A forum search in the archive with your original username is the best way to find out... unless you have been pruned of course.
Some will remember I was heavily involved in the mk.1 to mk.2 changeover and moderated in that initial period of registration. At that time I was working as a self employed motor engineer being able to look in frequently when I used the office phone next to the PC. I think then there were four or five of us directly involved with vehicle repairs who offered replies to many queries... and Chris Watson of course!
Now after 13 worthwhile years just closing my business and "retiring" to a new venture where neither ECUs nor seized fixings can trouble me!

The first recorded post I could find.
See how HJ quoted a post - wouldn't get away with that now.
I remember where I was when first read about this site - On holiday in Llandrindod Wells of all places sitting on a bench reading the Motoring Section of DT waiting for Mrs P who was shopping.

Started reading the original BR back in early 2001, first posted mid 2001....you didnt need to register then. Originally posted as Ian L.
Wonder what happened to Dizzy, Martyn BRM? Managed to track some username changes through the years. One very annoying feature of the username changes is that if you change a username then all the past posts also change.
Dont post all that often these days but still read recent posts on most days.
Thanks goodness the endless speed camera threads dont surface as often as before..
Interesting to go back and read the Life outside the BR and Cars outside the BR threads from a few years ago

PU this is the "Peter" post which was said to be the first.
www.honestjohn.co.uk/forum/post/index.htm?t=2&m=5&...e
Forum search does seem to throw up some odd results for the earliest posts and some are really hard to find.
Hello Ian L, heard briefly from Dizzy the other day but promptly lost the mail so couldn't reply. I would expect he is still enjoying a "busy retirement". Martyn BRM I did wonder about too, must try and find out. Perhaps PU knows?
Of course in those early pre-moderator days we had a "Polo Girl" in the form of Carole Adams who would keep the male ego in check when required. She was a brave girl.... if I remember correctly on finding her Citroen unreliable she bought an MGF!

Late 2003. I've just checked my profile.
I was on before that while in the UK, from 2001 I think, but under a different name that I can't remember!
That's why I am the only HJ Backroomer whose real name appears at the top of every post. Although it might be a bit risky because anyone can look me up it does mean I get messages from old friends and things like that, which is nice.
And with a bit of luck I won't forget it...

Been reading since the beginning, but only started to post very recently. ( Nov 07 ) Sort of habit forming isn't it ? Thoroughly enjoy it most of the time even if some contributors do get a bit grumpy occassionally. Have already learned that you have to be crystal clear what you mean or someone will misinterpret it ! Have learned much useful stuff from here. Thanks all !
