One thing HJ did say was that as a result of the 5K KM oil changes he was not suffering from the excessive oil consumption - is this the answer to the problem then ?
I'm getting in a right state with this timing belt tension!
I'm following the haynes manual advice but the belt tensioner doesn't seem to work correctly. I fit the tensioner but it's almost like the spring is too long. Once the car is running I intend to replace the belt and tensioner anyway even though I was told it was done recently. I didn't want to spend another £50ish if the head refurb wasn't going to work. Any ideas please? I am desperate not to get this part wrong and wave goodbye to my egine.

Hi Galaxy, yes I have the one with the external spring but the spring just seems too long. It is hooked on the correct 'peg'. I'm delighted to say I tensioned the belt manually and the car runs fine! Before driving it I will get my local trusted mobile mechanic to do a cam belt change with new tensioner etc just to make sure. The only thing I feel might be wrong now is I suspect the water pump is U/S so have done a seperate posting about that. Thanks to all for advice!
Since the westward extension of the congestion charging zone in London Shepherds Bush Green - basically, for those who don't know it, an enormous triangular roundabout with trees in it - has become very, very tiresome especially for those travelling eastwards. The extra traffic trying to use Wood Lane/Scrubs Lane to avoid the charging zone meets the usual busy east-west stuff. But the eastward and westward carriageways have both been narrowed with cones, lumps of concrete etc. for road works, purpose unclear, for what seems like years and has certainly been several months. These roadworks are concentrated at the eastern (Holland Park Avenue roundabout) end of the Green.
As a driving environment the Bush has never been good, but at present it is close to unbearable. It is impossible to believe that those responsible for the road engineering are concerned in any way to restore traffic flow. Where do they get these people and what is their brief? Does London have a supervisory role or is all this stuff in the hands of local authorities?
I saw a clip of Ken Livingstone the other day assuring viewers that his American traffic adviser or supremo has had nothing to do with the congestion zone extension or anything else anti-car. He himself was behind those, he implied. Nevertheless it doesn't surprise me that working for hizonner on transport matters has driven the unfortunate (if well-paid) adviser to drink. Read more

I am currently getting through front tyres on my old escort at an expensive rate! Had the old tyres changed recently got the tracking sorted as it was WAY out Negative camber, thought that was the problem sorted. Have just done near 1000 miles since tyre change and now see that outside of tyres are wearing very fast, ie Positive Camber. Every time I go around a corner at reasonable speeds I get a horrid screeching from the front tyres. The car is a 98 reg, back shocks were changed very recently, the front I believe have never been done, that said they do dampen recoil movement but it takes my fully body weight just to compress them when compared to the rear.
Does anyone have any idea what could be causing the tracking to go from one extreme to the other so soon?

I am a biker and a girl and I just happen to be blond! how ever I seem to be ahead of the guys when it comes to problems of vehicles that are not supplied with spare wheels.
First a motorcycle never comes with a spare, so what do we do to protect ourselves because unlike a car when you get a flat on a bike it can literally mean life or death. For years we bikers have fitted tyre sealants into our tyres and I can personally vouch for its capabilities of sealing punctures as they happen. But you have to be careful which one you use, there are a lot out there that can be downright dangerous. They will cause unbalance in the wheels will ball up and dry out and are sheer hell to get out of the tyre and off the rims when you come to change the tyre. The one the bikers use is Ultra Seal it does not give any problems at all, and best of all it will not let you ride / drive on a dangerous tyre, instead it lets the tyre down in a controlled manner letting you get safely to the side of the road. It will fix 95% of all punctures and that is good enough for me. It has saved me on more than one occasion and I am thankful to the makers. I do not drive slowly I ride a ZX9R that is capable of speeds up 190mph and on track days I get pretty close to those speeds and it was on a track day that I had my first experience of this product it literally saved my life.
So there you go, stop moaning about not having a spare and get ultra Seal fitted. By the way they also do DIY kits which are a doddle to do.

I have three questions regarding insurance.
1. Which companies allow one policy with two cars on it? Do these constitute value for money in terms of claiming etc?
2. Can a policy be tailored so the value of the car you provide is the actual amount you are awarded in the event of a claim. This might be a car for example worth more to oneself than to the outside world.
3. This is more about motorcycle insurance; in a serious accident, is there any extra cover for loss of income, debt, etc already available on ones own policy. Does comprehensive aid in this, or is this what the legal cover is for?

for q 1 there's an ad to the left of this screen for Primo that insures up to 6 cars on one policy.
for q 2 local yokel says it all
for q 3 legal cover is for the lawyers fees if they have to claim for any loss of earnings etc not covered by your comp policy - need to check the small print on any given policy to see just what they do cover.

In effect it starts going off when its put in,the main worry appears to be its anti corrosion ability/ heat transfer,certain man are saying brake fluid changes should be between 12 and 24 months.
I cant see this happening unless new cars are done when in for a service,as for older cars I doubt they will be done at all unless brake faults occur, and fluid change is standard with parts replacement,it was hard enough years ago to get customers to have fluid changed while servicing (it was seen as unnecessary) to some I think it still is??
