Took my boys to the lakes today - nice and sunny, bit of a trip on a boat, lovely day, all in all.
Both I and the 11 year old noticed there were loads of bikers about. Most of them were stood next to the rows of parked bikes, stretching, looking rather sweaty and uncomfortable in their leathers. The few that had strayed more than a few yards from their steeds walked about the shops with a helmet in one hand with curious stiff legged gait, no doubt caused by the trouser/boot comibination they were wearing.
Would it not have made more sense for these couples (most seemed to have a pillion today) to have travelled to the beauty spot by car (maybe a two seater). After all they could have stood next to their bikes in just about any car park, couldn't they.
Incidentally I don't aim this at any particular biker or pillion, it is just a general observation and does not necessarily relect the views of any other reader or non reader of this site, blah-di-blah-blah:-) Read more

I used to have days like this occasionally. This was in the days of the TV series "Get Smart" where the agent had a cone of invisibility lowered from the ceiling when receiving instruction from his masters.
Bicycle riding thru Birmingham City Centre and the Gravelly Hill Interchange on a daily basis on my way to work and home again in the evening. these invisible days seemed to be quite random. I could never establish a pattern to them so enabling me to call in and say "not coming today folks - manage without me"

Hi

Read with interest the following link and wondered if anyone (M.M. ??) who contributed is still around to help me as I think my problem is related to this.

www.honestjohn.co.uk/forum/post/?f=4&t=9597 .

My daughter bought one of these cars Saturday. This afternoon I swapped the aftermarket JVC headunit for her Sony one no problem, all works fine. Then spent some time cleaning it , hoovering it out etc.

Went to start it up after finishing and the battery was very low (had doors open all afternoon cleaning and doing the stereo) and it wouldn't start and the alarm went off, twice (I think twice is normal).

Had a look to see if I could see anything obvious and under the fuse box are some wiring harness connectors and there was a large yellow wire hanging loose. I think I may have disturbed this when fumbling for the bonnet release catch.

Anyway read the thread above and saw the reference to the wiring connectors under the back seat behind the drivers seat. I had a look and the connectors are the same type as under the fuse box and there is a large yellow wire on one of the connectors however the other wires don't seem to correspond to the same positions but I am strongly suspecting that the yellow wire has something to do with the problem.

Now I have 4 questions

1) can anyone describe to me which connector under the fuse box and which position the yellow wire goes in ?
2) would the fact that the battery is very low make the alarm go off when you try to start it )the old starter clicking sounn - like a ratchet?). If I charge the battery will it all be OK
3) can anyone help with the key to turn off the alarm system under the bonnet?
4) any other help or suggestions

I would be very grateful for any help.

Many thanks in advance !

My Sister In Laws 2001 VW Polo 1.4S has developed a problem getting into third gear. Its like new with 50k miles. However unless really give it lots of power when changing up into third it refuses to engage. Changing down is a no no and it will engage with double de clutching (not popular in 2007). Is this a gear linkages problem and VAG dealer territory? Or something that can be dealt with by a local garage? I've lent her our old Fiesta for a week to see if I can get the Polo repaired, so all thoughts -as always welcome. Read more

sounds like something internal probably a missed gear and a synchro ring damaged

Wifes Saxo would cut out once or twice within 0 -200 miles. Could not find any loose connnections a turn of the key back 1 click then back to normal position and the car would carry on as normal. There were no codes stored. I had to agree reluctantly that I did not know what was wrong so I left the car at the dealer they returned the car back saying they could not replicate the fault. The only difference between their driving and mine was that they only had the 1 key on the ring so I removed my other keys (including a Vauxhall key) and so far 2800miles the fault has not returned. When looking for the original fault I rocked the keys up and down to no avail so I am wondering ,could my Vauxhall key interact with my Citroen? Read more

very unlikely, once the ignition has been turned on the ecu interragates the key and assuming that the key gives the correct signal then the immobliser then becomes redundunt (this is describing it in simple terms) the shear fact that the vauxhall key code hop (change sequence) each and every time its used in a vauxhall the chances of it being the same code are very slim . the only time that i have experienced any interuption of a key signal is usually in a high radio interferance area (local police station) and under ground car parks but this usually blocks the signal/scrambles it (wont start/crank) and we tow the car away from the area and then try it again ! how ever nothing surprises me nowadays

Hi All,

I would really appreciate your advice my dads cougar is in need of new front wishbones he was going to fit them himself so tried getting new parts through dingbro only to be told that they don't stock them and that it would be main dealer only.

So after contacting our local ford dealer there charging £150 each which is pretty steep does anyone know if it would be worthwhile sourcing these parts from america and how to go about it

Thanks in advance

thanks i d i will try phoning round a few parts companys and see what they come up with hopefully we can get a part as not keen on paying that.

it's the same running gear as the 2.5 mondeo so you would think someone stocks them

Can anyone advise at all how to take these apart further than the velcro and zip fittings that hold the washable cover on. Our daughter was sick all over hers today and it went way down beyone the cover and we can not access to clean properly. The manual for the car has nothing in it to help. We ideally want to get the harness straps off totally to wash and then be able to clean in the area of the foam that we can see down there somewhere!
Many thanks. Read more

Hello could someone please tell me if the Lexus LS 430 is chain cam and also if the Lexus GS300 is chain cam. Is thier much differnce between a 3.0 and 4.3 engine in terms of mpg?

Thanks Read more

Thanks, the lexus dealer service guy in the UAE has sadi that they are belt and not chain. hmmm

Please note that in the UAE the 3.0 engine is rated at 228 bhp and does not have direct injection. It is a sllight different version to that offered in Europe.

Both Citroen and Ford (that I know of) are offering Diesel engines with "Overboost". Any views on their effect on the reliability/durability of the engines ? Read more

Aprilia

If it's anything like the overboost function fitted to the Porsche 911 Turbo then it
only activates at full throttle increasing the boost from the turbo for around 10 seconds
increasing the torque.

Yes, same idea. Its by no means new. Older turbo experts will remember a version of it when it was called 'boost spiking'.

My daughter has a Mazda 2 .When she tried to start it today it showed a warning light which the handbook says needs to be reset by the workshop and represents a key fault. The car did not turn over. Is there anyway around this re coding..Could it be that the battery is going flat and did not keep the coding memory?

Thanks
