My new-to-me Accord is suffering from a smeary windscreen. In time past I have used sachets of Clearalex crystals in the washer water and been very impressed. Is this product still available - none of my local motoring shops sell it and they tell me that they can't get it anymore. Read more

I got 40 sachets off ebay for £5 a couple of years ago, the prices on there now are a rip off. It's ok but does leave a whitish residue outside of the wiper arc when it dries. Someone on here recommended a dash of Stardrops and I trie that and think that's better.

I just got back from a visit to the scrapyard. When I was there I noticed a sign on the wall saying "No Refunds - credit notes only".

Because I was buying a part for a friend I asked for a reciept so I could give him the reciept so he knows I didn't rip him off. It took them ages to write out the reciept, I think they'd never had to do one before!

When I got home I was annoyed to see - written underneath - "Ignition Coil Daewoo Nexia"
"(ELECTRICAL ITEM NON REFUNDABLE)" !!!!!

The part does work, and I took my test meter with me to make sure it was looking like it would work before buying, but only when I got home noticed the metal bracket is slightly bigger by about 8mm and so it will not fit into the original holes and still have clearance of the battery. I am going to remove the bracket from the new and old ones and swap them - I'll have to angle grind the rivets away then substitute bolts. I'm doing this for a few reasons

1. 8v Nexias in scrapyards with coils attached are as rare as hens teeth
2. it's too much hassle phoning round any more scrappies and travelling distances to go there and back
3. The refund policy seems to force me to keep it????

But for future reference, lets discuss this refund policy. A scrapyard is a business like any other and the consumer has rights as with any other retailer. If the scrapyard sells a faulty component they are surely obliged under law to refund, repair or replace the item.

Factors affecting this would obviously be that you cannot expect an old component to be perfect and you cannot expect it to last very long. However you can expect it to work on the day of purchase and arguably for atleast 14 days.

If I took back the item on the day of purchase and said "it's a dud" I would jolly well expect to be given another and if they don't have another - a refund!

Ah, I remember the heady days of climbing aorund McGuinness'
in Stoke looking for bits for my Astravan.

Try finding an Alfa 145 QV or a Mitsubishi Colt GTi-16V
in your local scrapyard!

If your after parts for an alfa you were looking in the wrong place - same as parts for your Coupe. Ask me nicely and i might even tell you where it is!

Recently my Golf (GTI TDI 150 Diesel 2003 Model) has started pumping out some serious smoke when I accelerate through 1st, 2nd gear and in to 3rd. I have also noticed a drop in MPG. I used to get 520 - 540 out of a tank and now I'm getting closer to 450 miles. It also revs (RPM does not move) when sat idle in traffic.

It has been in the garage and they say that no alarms are showing when they plug the computer in, they thought it was the exhaust valve sticking open and exhaust gasses going back in to the engine which would prohibit combustion, but apparently that is fine. They have also mentioned that it could be the air mass system.

Has anyone ever had this problem? Please help as I am stumped. Read more

Mine hasn't got a sticker on either.

If my independent garage serviced a Galaxy, it would have the same 10W/40 that everthing else has! I have argued with the boss and he will not believe all this 506.01 stuff, his oil has superceded all these specs he tells me. I have stopped taking the Passat to them, I have found a good VW independent who uses the correct stuff, I have checked!

Just a thought me and some of guys had in work today. We all had to name the worst car we had ever driven and reason why.
I came up with the Rover 75, although it was alright to drive when it worked, has sat nav, climate etc pretty much everything failed on it on the 2 years I had it as a company pool car, engine blew up, front suspension broke, exhaust hanging off, climate control failed numerouse times due to leaks etc.

So my question is, whats the worst car you have personally drove and why???

(not sure if this comes under naming and shaming???) Read more

Ian - Jumping to the defence of the old Moggie here. I learnt on one and drove it for a year. It certainly had "moments" which prepared me well for the 3 series cars I've owned since ! The handling was er....."pure"(?) You could safely explore the limits of rwd handling when they were properly set up, the steering was pretty good on them, well geared rack and pinion when the rest of the world was driving on recirculating balls and worms (!), admitedly any fros risked a 360 spin !

I don't mean established classics like E-Types and the like, but run of the mill stuff that's maybe 20 years old give or take, and you still feel odd pangs of desire when you see a nice one.

On the way into work this morning I was overtaken by an absolutely immaculate mk2 Astra GTE 16v. It was finished in that lovely metallic burgundy, and was probably the first one I'd seen for as long as I can remember that looked a) immaculate, and b) as standard as it left the factory. It rode at the correct height, and sported the original "turbine" alloys and the standard square tailpipes. I found myself thinking "what a cracking looking car". I drove one many moons ago and remember a truly magnificent engine and terrifying performance with virtually no traction or handling. I had however long since forgotten it - apart from the odd chavved up one wearing a ridiculous bodykit, they just aren't about any more.

Has this happened to anyone else recently? If so, what car was it?

Cheers

I also always understood they were ancient graves (barrows) from Neolithic times - but my memory might be faulty - there are a lot on Moors in N Yorks where I grew up.
Maybe there's buried treasure under that thar mound!

Just found this by Googling!!

"Lexden Tumulus
Iron Age Burial Mound in Essex
Lexden Tumulus is late iron age, being dated to around 10 BC. It is thought to be the grave of Addedomarus, king of the native Trinovantes. The grave goods give an insight into the extent of Romanisation of the local aristocracy more than 50 years before the Claudian invasion. There were 17 wine jars, chain mail and a coin of Augustus struck in 17 BC which had been mounted as a portrait medallion. Other items included a statuette of Cupid and figurines of bull, boar and griffin. Trade with Roman Gaul was already influencing fashions among the rich. It is situated in the front gardens of 36 and 30, Fitzwalter Road, Lexden which is a suburb of Colchester."

My 2001 (2002 model) Passat did this the day before the MOT so I had it looked at by main dealer at the same time. The puddle light had stopped working about a year ago btw as well as the courtesy light above the door.

Garage reported a corroded/poor connection wiring loom which cleaned up OK. Puddle light and lock now OK but I guess at £75 it was an hours work. Courtesy light still not working. The inner panel had to be removed for access .

I've seen that running on LPG could do Damage to your engine.

I do some 15/20k per year and thought of fitting LPG to my car.

Is the benifits from this low cost fuel worth the savings and what problems could be expected.

If as seen suggesting running half Gas/Petrol, then might as well run a diesel with the same fuel costs per year overall as Gas/Petrol.

Free parking, and maybe congestion charge reduction too? But aren't you only able to get these because your car is a registered powershift car or sold as LPG from new? Most LPG conversions would therefore not qualify.

My peugeot appeared to spontaneously combust in the drive after being at rest for an hour and a half. The fire brigade identifed the cause as a probable electrical fault in the light cluster. Independent engineer assigned by insurance co. said it appeared to be as a result of a fault in the wiring loom. However, due to the extent of the fire he was unable to pinpoint the exact location of where it started. My insurance company have said that since they cannot identify the exact cause then they have no case with Peugoet and are claiming it against my policy! I've asked them for a second opinion which they are not willing to supply so I am now trying myself to find an engineer who can hopefully identify the cause.
Has anyone had any experience of Peugeots going up in flames??? I know there have been recalls on older models for faults which may cause them to catch fire but I know there have been none issued on mine (Manufactured 2004). Anyone have any idea where I could get a reliable independent engineer to have a look at the car?

Could it have been a diesel runaway?

I noticed that your car was the 1.6 diesel, which are notorious for being unreliable if the correct oil isn't used or changed regularly....
