Hi - I just got hold of a 1998 Fiesta 1.3 Encore and the coolant looks dodgy and I want to change it. Don't want to buy a Haynes just for that, as I am selling it on. Anyone give me some tips on changing the coolant? Best hoses to detach? Bleed valve locations? Any help appreciated. Thanks....

Loughrigg fell is a lovely place. Unless you are very unfit I would imagine you'll have a lovely time. There are some great caves round the northern side that are accessible from the small car park at NY366059 (OS grid reference).
For a general overview of what it?s like (with some context) this may be helpful: tinyurl.com/ygg3nd
Suggested walk to get the most (and there will be hundreds of other suggestions I'm sure.
Start at NY366059, head up on the tiny road that runs uphill from the carpark and you get to the side of Rydal Water. Follow the track upwards, and you will go past a small cave and then a massive cave, the latter you can walk into on stepping-stones. tinyurl.com/ygw29c
Continue on up the big path up to 342057, then turn hard left and there is a short but steep climb onto the top, with glorious views of Rydal Water and Grasmere. To come down you have a myriad of options, dropping south east onto the main path works fairly well, or you might just want to explore.
Hope this helps, shout if you want any more info.
By the way ? in Ambleside, ignore the crowds at the more touristy cafes, head for the Rattle Ghyll cafe. It?s tucked around the back on Bridge St, signed from just opposite the Climbers shop. Quiet, great (albeit veggie) food, and no tourists. You didn?t hear it from me!

Thanks Stuart, I'll take a look. I'll also check the dollar conversion on Acronis as it seems to be moving in the right direction.

As a special customer and because my dealer has had a very successful year beating all sales targets - they are going to sell me a car at cost if I buy before end of the year. And to prove they are not making any money on the deal they will show me all the invoice paperwork. Gosh I am so impotent - I mean important.
Any way - the letter is in the shredder now but it did cause me to think what is cost and what discount on brochure price would they be offering.
I thought it was about 5% - is this correct ?
To clarify - they state cost as the price they pay Honda for the car. Read more
The £17.5k Vectra that I drive cost the company that bought it new about £9k!
Advice please oh wise ones!...
I am considering buying a HUALI make battery jump starter for one of my daughter's Xmas presents. According to the 'blurb' it is small enough to carry in the glove box and is pre-charged via the mains or the car dash socket. Apparently when you have a flat battery all that is required to do is plug the unit into the dash socket and 'hey presto' a few minutes later the car battery is charged sufiicient to start rthe vehicle. It costs £32.45 inc p&p and claims to be a useful alternative power source for other 12v items e.g. lap top, mobile phone etc.
Don't want to get landed with a pile of useless rubbish and wondered if anyone had bought this product or something very similar?

I'm still not sure why - or when - you (not "you" obviously) are supposed to carry these things.
Obviously I understand the principle of jump leads - and, as mentioned above, am wary about using them nowadays for the reasons we all know about. But the "traditional pro type booster pack" is presumably big and heavy and, equally presumably, has to be kept charged in some way? ... and might only get used once or twice in the average driver's lifetime....
My mates A6 2.5 tdi has lost power! but only below 2000 rpm, the MAF has been changed so it is not that, is there any other common problems with this engine it is the 180bhp version. It is not a misfire just no torque below 2000 rpm used to pull well from 1100rmp. Thanks for any help. Read more
Thanks for your reply, Sounds like the MAF he has already changed. He had the car in at audi and they found nothing! They said now they want to start changing parts to find whats wrong. Anybody ever heard of premature camshaft failure on these engines?
The wife has an October 2003 Astra Convertible which has been faultless. Until now, now it's just out of warranty!!! One of the backlight bulbs behind the radio display unit at the top of the dash has gone so that one half of the display is very dim.
How easy is it then to get to this to change the bulb?. The central binnacle seems to be a separate unit from the rest of the dash. Is it a DIY job?
I was just wondering if you can do it yourself. If you can't and it's a dealer job I won't bother and will just live with it. Read more
The 4 hours is referring to substituting all the bulbs in the dash for LEDs. To change just the odd bulb or two *shouldn't* take that long. I just pointed you toward the how2 to give you some idea of what's involved to access the bulbs.
Put some new branded (NGK or Champion - can't remember) glow plugs on my '95 Fiesta 1.8 Diesel in about Jan/Feb 2005. With this recent cold weather it's very difficult to start from cold, gonna have a look at the glow plugs this afternoon. How should these last normally? I would have thought thet'd last for more than 2 years normally? Read more
Alright thanks for that guys, seing as several of you are recommeding BERU plugs then I'll give them a go. Will try my local factors on monday morning unless anyone knows a good mail order place?
I asked my garage to fit lap belts to the tip up sideways seats in the old Landy and the guy tells me that these kind of seats are now illegal and can't be used and will not be passed by the MOT.
Whaaaaat?
Can one of our legal eagles clarify or point me to the right bit of the legislation?
Thanks Read more
Just called a very well-known Landy spares specialist who gave me the same story as my garage. This is odd. It seems the vehicle with its belt-less seats will pass the MOT but if I fit belts it doesn't comply with the new rules.
If that is the case then fill in your own expletive.
I feel a trip to the wilder shores of Ebay coming on.
Last week I travelled back from southern France to the UK by way of Belgium. When I set off, my vehicle (a 2.5 DI Transit) had a full fuel tank and the weather had been hot and sunny for several weeks, with temperatures in the mid-to-high 20's.
When I got to Belgium, near Bastogne in fact, the air temperature was down to around 5 degrees and in the morning the engine was slightly reluctant to start. After driving for about 10 miles at around 50-55 mph the engine seemed to be misfiring and there was some considerable vibration of a rather 'odd' sort to be felt through the gear lever.
I filled the fuel tank (first fill since leaving the south) and stopped for lunch. When I set off again the engine was a little 'lumpy' for a while and then settled down to run as normal. There has not been any further misbehaviour.
Was I suffering from waxing of the fuel? I have often heard of this term, but never personally experienced it.
Thanks for any help Read more
Wind chill has no effect in laminar air flows (ie, smooth
air around or under a car).
Laminar air flows in this context mean that the air flowing close to the surface is moving more slowly than the air further away, i.e. more slowly than the vehicle speed through the air however if moisture is present then windchill is still a factor albeit probably an insignificant one.
THANK YOU VERY MUCH! All I needed to know.
