I have a 98 Passat and the rear drivers side door will not open. it is locked, the central locking is not opening the lock nor when you try to open the dorr from the inside it does not work. I checked the child saftey and that does not seem to be the problem. Does anyone have any tips on how to resolve this problem ?
Thanks

I think you'll find that it's due to the wires breaking between the door pillar and the door (inside the rubber bellows) I'm not sure from your post whether you can open the door at all now: If you can, peel back the rubber bellows covering the wiring and examine it closely. My problem was the speaker wiring rather than the lock wiring, and I was able to solder it successfully.
Good Luck...

Good sugestion Tim.
Are the windows still working (if electric)?
If the door doesn't open at all, you can still get to the wiring by opening the front door, the wiring loom is between the hinges.

Thanks i'll check the wiring now, the windows still work however the door cannot be opened

My wife has a markiv Golf and she also had a problem with the drivers side rear door not opening.
In her case the central locking was operating whirring away - raising and lowering the internal button but the door would not open from either the inside or outside. After I had fixed it we reckoned that she had tried to open the rear door before the central locking had had time to complete its cycle to open the rear door. She now exercises a little patience - waits a few seconds to allow the central locking to complete its operation before opening doors. The problem has never reoccurred.
Without boring you any further re my futile discussions with VW if my memory serves me correctly I used copious amounts of WD40 spraying into the lock mechanism and while holding open the external handle exerted strong pulling pressure while setting and resetting the central locking. and also locking and unlocking the door using the internal push button
Eventually the door opened

I don't know how true this is, but I was always told not to use WD40 or conventional light purpose oil in central locking systems. Apparently one should use graphite based lubricants.
Has anyone else heard this?

WD40 or oil leave a sticky residue in the lock which will attract further dirt;the lock should be cleaned, dried and,if lubrication is needed, then a dry lubricant such as graphite powder but that would be in a perfect world. Most people use a spray lubricant to wash away water or dirt to make the lock work.

The reason you can't open the door manually is because the deadlock is on. You will need to get the electrics sorted. Getting the door card off with the door closed will be tough though.

My 2001 (2002 model) Passat did this the day before the MOT so I had it looked at by main dealer at the same time. The puddle light had stopped working about a year ago btw as well as the courtesy light above the door.
Garage reported a corroded/poor connection wiring loom which cleaned up OK. Puddle light and lock now OK but I guess at £75 it was an hours work. Courtesy light still not working. The inner panel had to be removed for access .
